It's stupid for the Governor to rename such citadel of Learning. |

Schools names are brands and it’s disturbing that these old politicians don’t know this You can’t just wake up and rename a school that has been for years Same way they tried changing Unilag back then…. How can you just wake up and rename a school that has been for donkey years |

Reptyle:What do you mean by owners of the institution? Who is the government ? Is the government school a private property to be used to compensate families ? It is a school for the people and the key stakeholders are the people that carry the name of the school… the alumni, students, professors |

It’s a shame our leaders are so senseless in how they rename institutions. Ibadan Polytechnic is a brand name. Why will one idiot wake up one morning and change the name? That was how GEJ wanted to change University of Lagos to MKO Abiola university. It’s terrible |

Only UNILAG was smart enough to create a powerful and compelling brand from its name. Everything the school does reflect a compelling elitist institution brand. Once you choose UNILAG on your JAMB form alone, you are immediately assessed using the brand of the school. There's that consistency in the admiration, prestige and awe/envy UNILAG attracts at the same time that people who miss UNILAG admission forever feel like they missed something highly valuable and prestigious. Other institutions in Nigeria and Africa don't really understand the power in branding the name of their institutions so they did not create powerful brands from the name of their institutions hence their names can be easily discarded. The school name is The Polytechnic, Ibadan, the street name is Ibadan Poly or Poly Ibadan, we don't know which of the two is correct but often used interchangeably. The institution is assumed to in Ibadan city yet has multiple campuses even in interior rural areas of Oyo State outside Ibadan city thereby diminishing it from being considered as a city-based institution and you begin to scratch your head when you see someone studying Accountancy in a Polytechnic. So disjointed and non-compelling. Sincerely, in terms of branding, the name change is not different from its old name but I hope they have learnt their lesson like OAU that leveraged on the Oduduwa head symbol and Ile-Ife's prime place in human civilization and history. Just imagine seeing this about UNILAG alone, it is just one of the ways UNILAG radiate power of the school's powerful and compelling brand. You can now see why even Federal Government of Nigeria failed when it made attempt to change the name. This is because a lot has been invested in building the name into a powerful and compelling brand.

Olaide1295:Agreed, the governor is a "temporary custodian". But Government is a continuum let by a governor per time and the school in question is owned by "government". Whatever decision that the governor takes on behalf of government is ratified by the House of Assembly and gazetted so it is binding on subsequent governors. If another governor comes in and wants to change it, it would have to pass through the same process again. It might interest you to know that Harvard was not always called Harvard. It was originally called "New College". The name was changed to Harvard College in 1639, in honor of its first major benefactor, John Harvard, who left the college his books and half his estate |

I eventually completed my National Diploma, but it took five years without carried over, just because of strikes. |

Omoawoke:Lol. GEJ decided to put down the wave of student protests by reverting government's decision. Try that under a stubborn President like Obasanjo and the government's reaction would have been different. The students do not own the school and have zero say on what the school is called. |
| Re: Poly Ibadan Students Reject Renaming Of School To Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic by Reptyle(m): 3:15pm On Jun 27, 2025 |
Politicstoday:Lol. Which "court of justice" ruled that government has no right to change the name of a public school that is 100% funded by government? That judge needs his head examined. The case of UNILAG was reverted because GEJ as President had very little appetite for crisis in the polity. Some Presidents will take that decision and stand by it. An Obasanjo for instance wouldn't have gone back on his decision. |

Omoawoke:The "government" is the "owner" of the institution. The so-called "key stakeholders" can be "consulted" in taking decisions concerning the school. But the final decision rests with government. |

Politicstoday:Yes, they have a right to resist. But government has a right to insist and the law provides them backing to take such decisions like changing the name of the school. |

Politicstoday:Like i said, government under President Jonathan, adopted a passive stance on the name change hence the decision of the court. If the government was determined to change the name of UNILAG, no court anywhere would have stopped them. But I get your point. |

Though the name Ibadan poly has become house hold name but then what right does students have to tell the executive governor not to rename the school, is that their priority, soja come soja go Barack remains, what should be their uppermost demand is for the school to be well equipped with both human, material and academics resources that will impact their academics positively and make them highly sort for in the job market. |

ideatoprince18:You were in wrong company, a lone ranger. Once you make where you stand known, no one can force you into any fraternity. Anyone who cannot come forward to say this is who I am and this is where I belong cannot threaten me to leave an institution. It's either you leave me alone or suffer the consequences. I am an alumnus of the Polytechnic, Ibadan and there are various great students associations on campus which some Nigerian Universities don't even have. |

I don't understand what the students are protesting. The owner of the school wants to rename it, and the students are protesting. The polytechnic Ibadan belongs to the government of Oyo state. |

Politicstoday:What I am posting below was seen on a WhatsApp forum OMOLOLU OLUNLOYO POLYTECHNIC WHY ? I see that many know nothing about how the Polytechnic came about. Victor Olunloyo was the first Rector. But that is only a tiny part of the story. There were no funds back in 1970 to sustain the project, Nigeria just coming out of an expensive Civil War. It was so bad that much of the Capital Projects were done by Direct Labour.. The North - South Campus Road construction was done by an Engineer who personally drove the Tractors himself. Sorry he was not a Contractor, His name was Victor Omololu Olunloyo, the Rector. But that was not all. For political reasons he was removed by the Government. He collected the balance of his 4-year pay and moved on. Kwara State, a newly created State needed someone to help start Kwara Poly. Their choice? Victor Omololu Olunloyo. He went on to become also, first Rector Kwara Polytechnic. The students of Ibadan Polytechnic went crazy. The whole City was paralysed by their riots for weeks. The Student Union President was Olusola Agbeja Obada who later became Deputy Governor Osun State. She was declared wanted but managed to escape abroad where she lived for many years. Ask yourself after reading this if it was wrong to name the School after him. That is the History the Governor knows which you didn't know. Now you know. |

airsaylongcome:The change of name of the then highly reverred University of Ife in 1987 was totally resisted by Great Ife students and alumni but they were powerless because it was a brutal military dictatorship. Worthy of note is the fact that the name OAU was initially given to the then Ondo State University and that was successfully rejected by Ondo/Ekiti people being a state level decision. They need to stop changing the names of fully established institutions. It creates a damaging disconnect. Some radical Great Ife alumni till today reject being addressed as OAU products. They insist on UNIFE. |
