Poly Ibadan Students Reject Renaming of Institution To Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic.
Students of these days don't really have any modicum of diplomacy and are completely bereft of how to tone a letter to persuade the other party to reconsider a decision.

It is the utmost prerogative of the state Governor to name state owned institutions as deemed appropriate.

In this instance, aluta gra gra is completely off the options. You are urging, begging, yet, you use the word "must". No be foolishness be dat?

It seems the UNILAG to MAULAG face off that took place under Jonathan is giving you guys the morale..

Remember that your governor is a young man and he'll call your bluffs..

The change of name of the then highly reverred University of Ife in 1987 was totally resisted by Great Ife students and alumni but they were powerless because it was a brutal military dictatorship.

Worthy of note is the fact that the name OAU was initially given to the then Ondo State University and that was successfully rejected by Ondo/Ekiti people being a state level decision.

They need to stop changing the names of fully established institutions. It creates a damaging disconnect. Some radical Great Ife alumni till today reject being addressed as OAU products. They insist on UNIFE.
Great Ife powerless? Omo that’s news to me! Granted I was barely born when that name change occurred but maaaaan….powerless and Great Ife weren’t phrases I expected to be in the same sentence.

Thanks for the history lesson

Like i said, government under President Jonathan, adopted a passive stance on the name change hence the decision of the court. If the government was determined to change the name of UNILAG, no court anywhere would have stopped them. But I get your point.
alumni got judgement from the court and it was stop. Now same Ibadan poly will get injunction from the court and it will be stop too.

They are fighting constituted authority. That is on a lighter note. Why change the name of that school?

why do students of a government institution feel like they have a say into what the owner of an institution decides to name it.?? cheesy cheesy cheesy
They do. It's their school and alma mater.

Government belongs to us all. The governor is not a Lord, and the students are not peasants. Everybody has a say.

Na ehn all this higher institutions with people's names are disgusting! Thank God for Unilag that outrightly rejected the The Moshud Abiola name during the time of GEJ. Immortalization of roads building etc is good but not higher institutions.
They can only do that with GEJ. Can students try that with OBJ, IBB, Buhari, Abacha.

Jonathan weakened presidential and rubbish national Assembly because of his 2nd term ambition which he failed to achieve.

Yes, we are talking about the FG here and under military dictatorship, what power would students have even at NANS level?
By the time they kill one or two students at Gate 1, it's game over.

What sort of power do you imagine university students possess, or you got carried away with our aluta fantasies from time immemorial? Any attempt to go beyond mere noise & slogans would easily turn students to target practice by the military boys grin

On Great Ife, you have to understand that most of the fantasy stories of student power was due to the rural location hundreds of kilometers away from the seat of power. Venture too far out of the campus and you get rounded up without any sweat.

Before the seat of power was moved to Abuja by Babangida, the only university that they pay special attention to was UNILAG due to the location. Military armored tanks were permanently placed at UNILAG main gate and 2nd gate for decades. The school was a hotbed of radical student unionism perfectly aligned with socialist movements across Lagos back in those days. Even the likes of Sowore learned his trades in radicalism by leveraging that structure.

You were in wrong company, a lone ranger. Once you make where you stand known, no one can force you into any fraternity. Anyone who cannot come forward to say this is who I am and this is where I belong cannot threaten me to leave an institution. It's either you leave me alone or suffer the consequences. I am an alumnus of the Polytechnic, Ibadan and there are various great students associations on campus which some Nigerian Universities don't even have.
You won't understand bro ... I know what I saw and went through

Cult Guys.

Dem collect babe from me.
Actually I no know say the babe dey befriend one of them.
The babe fell for me and weve just started seeing.

The guy wey dey date am don finish from the institution but put the lady in the hands of Frats members to watch for him.
They went to treaten the babe and gave her some slaps.

They downloaded my gathered information to her. She came to me crying.

I summoned courage go meet the guy. I met them at Abe igi, (you still remember that spot?) I saw the guy amidst othe Frats in a circle.

I called him, Remi!

He looked back. And the other guys informed "thats the guy"

He looked back again and ignored me.

I called again. Remi, can I see you please.
He felt reluctant but the other guys told him to go and listen to what I had to say.

He came over and I shook his hand "im Kunle," (not my real name though, )

"Tinu said you came to beat her up"
He looked at me and said "En henn, hows that your problem?"

I smiled.

"Well, please dont beat her again. Its not her fault. It is mine." I said.

The guy looked at me strangely. Like who be dis one? grin

I repeated, "it's my fault. She told me she had a boyfriend, that the person isn't around. But I thought it was one of those things babes say to wade off guys. Anyways, I back off,"

I gave my hand to him for a shake. He took it and I returned back to my room. Since that day, I stopped seeing the lady.

Two months after, I saw her roommate and she said, "she's left for OAU."

THE POLYTECHNIC IBADAN was a cult invested school.

Many jists dey, but no time to tell stories.
.... Bro I was a fresher.... And I'm not hyping myself. Im tall and have this commanding presence anywhere I am . It was during my PUMe that I was approached. I did not even know he was a system guy.

We met in a bus and he became my friend . Told me he was running HND in mech eng and I should call him if I needed anything. I was happy at least I have gotten a guy who can show me round shabir so I thought. That day after the exams he bought food for me and escorted me to the par down to my base.

When I got admission I called him and he was happy. I did not know that was the beginning of my ordeal. E no reach 2 weeks fine boys don court me. When he noticed that was when he told me that he wants to introduce me to some of this friends that we will go in the evening. Unfortunately for him,a guy in my hostel overheard it and after he went home, the guy told me that I should not go that the guy wants to initiate me into something I won't be able to handle. Tha was how I avoided the guy that day. Since then , anytime he asked to see me I will feign busy or will look for an excuse. The he became violent and was like "Do I want to go and be with Fine boys?" that he will make life unbearable for me and truly he did.

My lodge was ransacked and everything was stolen down to my Paint of Garri . I was waylayed and beaten and my phone was stolen. I was very afraid to go out at night. I had to leave the school for the whe it became much.

Only Obafemi Awolowo and Ambrose Alli retains the status as it was before the renaming but other Universities could not.

Imagine If Unilag is to bear Moshood Abiola University, it's as worthless as Shilling !!

Being a Governor for 3 months is not a prerequisite for having Ibadan Poly as a legacy.
