mfm04622:Fair enough. But in this day and age, you can also educate yourself about a common illness like diabetes so you dont 100% rely on a doctor, many of whom have not kept up with new developments and perspectives happening in Europe and North America. And I suspect his father has being seeing a doctor, but things are not improving. Many doctors just want to prescribe medication, which after some years start affecting people's liver, kidney etc And in most cases, once you are diabetic, high blood pressure will soon follow. Before patients know it they are battling 2 very serious illnesses and they have to take more and more medication that they can't get off. What, and how we eat has an important role to play in the healing process. Doctors don't have all the answers. |

Earthstorms:I wish this your viewpoint isn't wrong. You may reverse pre diabetes, but not full blown diabetes Avoid garri.rice.soft drink . alcohol.yam.most fruits and you will be fine Brisk walking, garden egg, cucumber, fist portion food quantity with lots of green vegetables, you will be fine Do everything to avoid the onset of diabetes, especially if you have family history of it |

gabbytabby:I disagree. 1.If you're already diabetic, avoid beans o. The beans in Nigeria today are too sweet, and have very little fibre. 2. Making your own bread will not make much difference to a diabetic. Avoid bread. 3. Margarine is very very unhealthy. Avoid. 4. Coconut oil is one of the most saturated oil. Saturated fat = high cholesterol. Avoid. Why would someone dealing with diabetes want to add high cholesterol to his situation. Avoid that oil at all cost. 5. However much you wash rice, it is unlikely to reduce the starch content by more than 20%. That is not going to help a diabetic. A pre-diabetc, may be. A diabetic is in a serious medical situation and must deal with it with all seriousness. So, rice should be out. 6. Oats is very high in carbohydrate, though it has a high fibre too. But the carb level is still too high for a diabetic. Also, like I said in an earlier comment, a diabetic should avoid any food that has been pulverised/grounded from its original state. So, swallow foods are not going to help a diabetic. Avoid them. 7. Sweet potato is a no no. Regular Irish potato in small portions should be fine. 8. How on earth should a diabetic go anywhere near pineapple? That's pure sugar. In any case, what we write here are general statements, but how each diabetic respond to certain foods may vary from one diabetic to another. The best thing is to invest a small amount in a blood sugar test kit so you can test yourself about 2 hours after you eat certain foods and write down your blood sugar figure for that food. Do the same for other foods, after some time you will have a better picture of what foods increase your blood sugar level the least, and which ones to avoid. You can buy ACCU-CHEK from most pharmacies. I hope I am not breaking any Nairaland rule. This is a public interest matter, as diabetes is one of the biggest killers in Nigeria. It is important, we do whatever we can, to pass helpful information around. |

Make sure u checked ur blood sugar regularly? Exercise regularly, eat low carb food, go for regular check up especially Hba1c & kidney function test, visit ur doctor & take your medication regularly (although on this one, I heard that the diabetic medications that's affordable in nigeria are old generation drugs like daoin, amaryl, metformin etc), try and get an international doctor if you have money, because there are alot of new generation diabetic drugs that are super wonderful. That not only crashed blood sugar but prevent alot of the side effects which normally leads to amputation, blindness, kidney failure etc or death sef. Infact I told one diabetic, that I believe lack of money to buy those new generation drugs that's what making diabetes to be like a death sentence in nigeria. |

Having a prescribed diet for diabetes is good but what will save you is taking your medications and eating very little. Rather than eating a large chunk of food twice or thrice a day, eat little chunks like 5 times or more. Also, if the diabetes is type II, which is mostly the case for adult. Just know it's most likely your fault. Type II Diabetes is very preventable. Just eat for energy, cut most of your carbohydrates and burn your calories by engaging in regular exercises. But no, some of you want to eat the biggest meat because you can afford it. Have you ever wondered why it's rare with poor people? That's cause it's an affluent disease. |

coputa:First, the major culprit - sugar. Avoid it. There are people that will come to tell you to take enough fruit and vegetables... Whilst fruit and vegetables are good, AVOID sugary fruit. Any fruit that is sweet is not your friend, because the body doesn't care where you get your sugar from. Sugar is sugar, no matter the source. Honey is sugar, too. Protein is your best bet. Eat a lot of eat and leafy greens. Avoid SEED oils (groundnut, soybean, sunflower etc.) any oil that comes from seeds should be avoided. Palm oil, olive oil, coconut oil, animal fat, beef tallow etc are your best bet if you are looking for healthy oils. I can't emphasize the importance of protein. Eat enough of it. Eggs are best bet because they pack a lot for their size and cost. AVOID wheat o! Anything that is made from processed wheat should be avoided. Bread, buns, meat pie, run! |

When you want to contribute you do so without rubbishing others. I am dealing with diabetes and use Freestyle libre to measure using my phone app. The fact that one has type 2 diabetes does not mean that you still do not need the nutrients ( hence the addition of moringa and soursop 2 to 3 times a week) and we don’t take any item in isolation as if one is eating just that item alone everyday. You talk as if you are a specialist when all you are is an alarmist please take am easy. I talk based on extensive research I have done and I also do blood work every month and fluctuate between normal and pre diabetes on the basis of how religious I am with my diet. I know where I was coming from which resulted in my being unresponsive for 5 days. Sweet potato when boiled has low glycemic index of 45 and also because it releases its sugar slowly and so does not spike suddenly. Beans and indeed legumes in general is good for a diabetic. My go to beans in black eyed beans. Pineapple was mentioned in the context of a substitute for sugar or saccharine in hibiscus tea or drink. The alternative ingredient to a diabetic bread is what matters. Where you saw margarine is when I mentioned butter not margarine Oats because the glycemic index is 55 which compared to other swallows which are in the 90s and when a small quantity is paired with Okra with a glycemic index of 20 to 35 works. I am going to stop here because when it comes to what a diabetic can eat you have nothing to offer. They should eat ACCU-CHEK Abi since that is your only suggestion. When you are ready with your constructive contribution then let’s talk. It’s infantile to only specialise in a takedown without proferring your own solutions. DeLaRue: |

pandax:Go to YouTube and search for type 2 diabetes reversal and educate yourself on how to reverse type 2 diabetes. It is possible to reverse full blown type 2 diabetes and people are doing it. Just that it requires discipline. Intermittent fasting and keto diet are some protocol people use in reversing type 2 diabetes. Infact any diabetic that can reduce 30% of his weight will invariably reverse his type 2 diabetes in the weight reduction process. Once reversed, you can eat all foods in moderation. It's like asking if an alcoholic can reverse alcoholism and if he can take some alcohol after the reversal. An alcoholic can reverse his alcoholism by staying off alcohol for some time, after which he can still take small quantities of alcohol occasionally without issues. |

ttoyetade:Just like malaria doesn't go away, once you treat malaria and you allow mosquitoes to feast on you, the malaria comes back. If you reverse diabetes you have to eat healthy to remain healthy. If you return to eating food that spike your blood sugar and causes a corresponding insulin spike, then the insulin resistance and diabetes will return. The human body is not designed for non stop eating and excessive eating of processed carbohydrates without intermittent fasting periods. Abusing the body through poor diet and poor lifestyle is what is causing the diabetes epidemic. |

Twinskenny all foods are good. It is the combination that is the problem. For example, avoid eating only bread and tea. This will spike your sugar level instead eat bread(brown bread) and beans and either cocumber or cabbage. When eating rice, stop the regular rice and meat ( if you do that). Instead divide your plate into four, 1/4 of it should be rice, 1/4 should be beans and 1/2 should be vegetables. This is pretty much how most of your meal will look like. It's just slight adjustment. One thing you should know that is very important, once you add vegetable (eg cocumber, cabbage, etc) to your diet, even if it is having a high GL, the vegetable will reduce the GL drastically. That is why it is advisable to always add vegetable to all your meal. Also add things like fish and boiled eggs. Try to reduce things that have to do with oil. Eg fried egg, akara, anything fried. God bless you |
