Owolabi Salis Makes History As First Nigerian Astronaut On Blue Origin’s NS-33 by akokaite(op): 7:15pm On Jun 29, 2025
In a groundbreaking moment for Nigeria and the African continent, Owolabi Salis hailed from Ikorodu-Lagos, Nigeria has become the first Nigerian to journey into space, joining the crew of Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-33 mission.

Launched from Blue Origin’s West Texas site, NS-33 carried Salis and five other international astronauts past the Kármán line. The internationally recognized boundary of space marking a significant milestone in suborbital flight and African space exploration.

Salis, a renowned spiritual leader and advocate of community development, described the mission as a “cosmic convergence of science and spirit,” emphasizing the deeper significance of his voyage beyond Earth’s atmosphere. “This mission is more than just a trip into space, it’s a spiritual journey, a call to inspire future generations,” he remarked during a pre-launch briefing.

He trained alongside a diverse crew that included Allie Kuehner, Carl Kuehner (Chairman of Building and Land Technology), Leland Larson, Freddie Rescigno Jr., and Jim Sitkin. The mission patch for NS-33 symbolically featured green rings encircling Earth, representing both the planet’s horizon and the Kármán line and a tribute to humanity’s reach for the stars.

Blue Origin’s NS-33 launch, which lifted off today June 29, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. CDT, successfully completed its suborbital flight, offering its passengers a brief but life-changing experience of weightlessness and planetary overview.

As Salis returned safely to Earth, he was met with celebration across Nigeria and beyond. His journey marks a new chapter in African participation in space exploration and cements his legacy as a pioneer for Nigeria in the final frontier.

They're just passengers, not astronauts.

Tourists, not real astronauts.
