Nation on fire: Heatwave sparks wildfires in northern Israel, prompting evacuations

Scorching temperatures and strong winds spark blazes across north, forcing evacuations in multiple towns; fire crews and aircraft battle fast-moving flames near Haifa, Kafr Qassem and Sea of Galilee as authorities warn of continued risk amid heatwave

Amid an intense heatwave and dry desert winds, wildfires erupted across multiple areas in Israel on Sunday, prompting large-scale evacuations and a nationwide emergency response. Major fires were reported in Haifa, Kafr Qassem and the village of Hukok near the Sea of Galilee.

In Haifa, a large wildfire broke out in an open area near Nahal HaGiborim, quickly advancing toward residential areas. Firefighters began evacuating residents, and six firefighting aircraft were deployed to contain the flames.

According to Fire and Rescue Services, at least four buildings and one portable structure were damaged. Authorities emphasized that their top priority is stopping the fire’s spread and safely evacuating at-risk homes. At least five nearby streets were fully evacuated, and local schools were also cleared as a precaution.

In the north, a wildfire near the village of Hukok led to the evacuation of the first row of homes, with seven firefighting teams and four aircraft working to gain control. Fire Commander Itzik Ben Hamo described it as a “very large fire fueled by strong winds in rugged terrain,” adding that crews are working to prevent its spread to neighboring communities. Police closed a section of Highway 90 and redirected traffic as the situation developed. The fire is believed to have started in the Amud Spring Nature Reserve.

In central Israel, another blaze erupted at the entrance to Kafr Qassem, where three firefighting units successfully contained a brush fire that threatened a nearby gas station and a crowded parking lot. The fire was brought under control before it could cause significant damage. Due to smoke and firefighting activity, one traffic lane was temporarily closed, prompting heavy congestion.
