The number one goal of going to school is to become a problem solver and not primarily to get a job. Education refines a man's ability to interact with his immediate and complex Environment but today that mission is almost been compromised because graduates today have become a burden to the society. Lets face the reality Nigeria's Labour market will keep getting saturated by the day as more graduates enters the labour market. But on the other side is enormous problems looking for people that will solve them and create wealth that is the reason I want the Government to prioritize Technical training and vocational studies. I am starting a program in my Institute of Tech that will see people in the informal sector that is people learning a skill in the roadside welder for instance getting a formal training and also certification. Also planning of running this as a partnership with different Government

do you know how many graduates that have created huge solutions to the problems in their domain but the government isn't helping them achieving their goals? When you don't engaged someone that's creative in his works, do you know he/she will challenge his talents to solve problems to another thing entirely. The major problem is the government policies not helping the graduates that are out there of no jobs.

My advice for undergraduates is to learn a high income skill before graduating

In case you are not aware some of the people you went to school with are the people who will create the jobs....You can also be part of those people...The jobs you are searching for was also created by some one...

And do you know the population that's graduating yearly and still no hopes for them. Do you know my thousands of graduates that are self employed too. Not everybody will involve in the vocational skills. Some are good 👍 in the office.

The government has no enabling ground for any graduate or any person with reasonable skill to thrive. Social and economic systems' score, zero.

The difference is that Nwaboi in ladipo market learnt a skill that can enable him setup a business within 5 years while his mate studying mechanical engineering in university does not know how to locate alternator in an engine bay even though he knows all the physics theories and laws that make it work.

If there are no white collar jobs who among these two possess the practical skill to setup an auto shop from scratch?

What we should be advocating for is practical Oriented course curriculum in our universities with emphasis on skill acquisition such that a graduate has both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to become an entrepreneur

Certain people on this thread are trying to overly smart. Stop trying to be too academic and accept the reality. People go to school so they can get a job. If you don't have any helper to start a venture, immediately you're done with school nobody will ask about your welfare anymore.

Can a hungry man start a venture or learn a skill? You'll be left with option of doing menial jobs to survive and being creative in that situation is not easy.

The best option is to start learning a high paying skill from your 100 level but some people are also struggling doing menial jobs that they can't concentrate on learning a skill.

Anytime this conversation comes up, there are usually this group of people who will start telling us how the purpose of tertiary education is not to get jobs. That you go to school to be a problem solver or to broaden one's mind blah blah blah.

I mean, if this is what going to school is truly about, should it have to cost several thousands or millions in tuition, house rents, and other associated costs just to achieve this? Like, except it is medicine, law or engineering, broadening of the mind, problem solving skills, and most kind of knowledge can be acquired cheaply via say YouTube or other sources, without wasting four, five, or seven years of one's life. Also, if a job doesn't give the return on investment for the years of study and financial commitment, what should then?

I dunno, but it is not even like what is happening in our universities is education in the real sense of the word. Obsolete courses like mass communication and theory, theory, theory and more theory of outdated (imagine being thought ancient-of-days programming languages like fortan and cobol in 2025) and irrelevant knowledge that the learner cannot apply to better their lives or otherwise use to add value to an employer.

When you get to your university gate, you will see the motto of your university. They always talk about knowledge and skills, and never about getting jobs. So, we go to school to acquire knowledge and skills that will help us understand and question the world around us and solve its problems.

While the university doesn't expect you to put that knowledge into bad practice (that's why they find you worthy in character and learning), what you do with it is totally up to you. In summary, nobody promised you that you would get a job after going to school because getting a job isn't the essence of going to school in the first place.

You do also realise that thousands also retire every year....

You go to school to get educated or an education not necessarily primarily to find a job even though that's one of the end goals.

The main reason of going to school is to prepare for opportunities in life, a friend of your uncle or your dad or mum friends might see an opening space in their work place or your pastor announce in church or your imam at the mosque said there is a vacancy for fresh graduate training in soso field or course what happen in such situation when you didn't go to school, your parents will feels sad you will feel sad to your self, life can be wicked at times, it is when you are not a graduate, you will be seeing opportunities for a graduate.

Years ago I was almost deported at the point of entrance into USA but guess what after a meeting of over an hour because of me by the immigration officer,they came to me and said to me that if not I am a medical Dr from where I am coming from which align with the people the President(Trump first tenure)want to come in that I would have been sent back.
They said I should make sure I leave as I told them after my 2weeks vacation.you know what I travel back after 2weeks and reentered again after 8months.

If one does not go to school the person will be an illiterate..he will not be able to read, write, express himself, speak English fluently

The essence of school is not only for seeking jobs..the essence of school and education is for one to acquire knowledge, skills, to be sound and enlightened .. so as for you to use this life qualities to go into or endeavor into opportunities/life opportunities and progress and make it in life and achieve and be successful in life

In UK, that's exactly what happens. Their locals are all learbing work.
It is we Nigerians, Africans that are running there to fund their universities with our money as international students. International students pay 5 times what their own local UK students pay.
The money is so sweet for them that they have been coming to Nigeria come and advertise their UK universities. And we keep carrying our hard earned naira to give them.

To their own locals, they only beg them that, "you are likely to get a better job if you get a degree". That's how their universities are advertised on their local radio stations. I listen to UK radio online. So I hear all the adverts.

I totally disagree with you. Why should I spend four years or five years or more of not to gain knowledge that can make me succeed in that field which enables me gainfully employed.
They are many job that you can even though at a professional level that even if you did not go to higher institutions you could perform with less than 3 months training. Why spending years, time and money. Those institutions that are established to retain workers why then do they employes graduate if school is not for work. The primary reason we go to school is to work. I study electrical which I don't have to go to school to learn. Through apprenticeship system I could have learnt far more better than what I learnt at the university. Universities will full your heads with theories that cannot be used to create a system that works. Theory will not wire a full building.
