Where Do You See Smartphone Tech In 5 Years? by Praizee5(op): 7:22pm On Jun 28, 2025
Hi guys,

I was just thinking about how fast phones have evolved. Not so long ago, we were all hyped about fingerprint scanners finally moving to the screen, and fast charging going from 10W to 33W felt like magic. Now we have AI cameras, up to 120W charging, and even phones you can rinse under a tap without worry.

It got me wondering......what do you think smartphones will look like in the next 5 years?

Here are a few questions to kick things off:

Will all phones eventually be foldable or rollable?

Is there any chance we’ll stop using physical SIM cards completely?

How far do you think battery tech will go—maybe a full week on one charge?

Will most phones become fully waterproof by default?

Do you think brands will keep removing accessories from the box?

I’m honestly impressed how some brands are making flagship-level features more accessible. For example, I used to think high IP ratings and massive batteries were only for premium devices, but now you see models like realme with proper water resistance and long battery life at midrange prices.

Personally, I feel like in the next few years, more brands will push AI-powered software—like automatic call summaries, real-time translation, and smart photo editing without needing extra apps. That could really change how we use our phones day to day.

What are your predictions? Wild guesses are welcome.

Phones have always been foldable (look at Samsung flip and the Fold) however not a lot of brands have been able to achieve this. Hopefully more brands like Tecno, redmi and realms starts making flip or foldable models so it can be affordable and accessible for everyone

Foldables will definitely become more common once the prices stop folding our wallets too

After comparing iPhone 12 and 16 (bout five years gap)... I don't think there'll be major differences in 5 years (looking at iPhone 16 and 20), but I'm certain there'll be in 10 years.

We'll five years is quite short, there might not be so much difference. Maybe in 10 though

Battery life is one aspect that hasn’t improved in years. We should have solar powered phones in this age.

Honestly, no one can actually predict the future of phones. If you monitor phone brands closely, every new release brings a different technology. Android phones are developing at a very fast pace. Soon, brands that are not innovative or following the trends would pack up. People are going for value than just price

It's an evolution, and technology keeps evolving. Things get changing and life keeps improving, that why what was used years ago can not be used in years to come.

I would say keep an open mind, most things you see in movies(are already experimental) and don't be shocked when you see them soon

In 5 years, I feel like phones will be more AI assistant than device. Your phone will know what you need before you unlock it 😅

True. The pace of change is crazy. it’s like every year something becomes outdated. Imagine using a phone without fast charge or biometric security now 😅
