Nigerian Businesswoman Deported From U.S. After A Review Of Her Social Media by voiceoftheupcom(op): 2:03pm On Jun 29, 2025
A Nigerian entrepreneur’s dream of showcasing her brand internationally was shattered after she was detained and deported from the United States upon arrival — despite holding a valid visa. Her emotional story, now viral on social media, has sparked deep sympathy and conversations around visa transparency, social media usage, and the challenges young business owners face abroad. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

A Dream Denied

According to the businesswoman, who had been preparing to attend a trade fair in New York, she was granted a B1/B2 visa (for business/tourism). However, upon arriving in the U.S., she was detained for 24 hours and then denied entry.

The heartbreaking twist? Immigration officials allegedly reviewed her Instagram posts, where they found content related to her business, which raised red flags about the true intent of her visit.

“I was granted a visa to the U.S., only to be detained for 24 hours and denied entry into America just because they checked my social media handle and saw what I posted there,” she wrote.

Emotional Toll Over Financial Loss

The entrepreneur, who remained unnamed in her viral post, shared how months of planning, sleepless nights, and thousands in expenses were lost in a matter of hours. She expressed pain not just for the financial loss, but for missing the opportunity to connect with her customers and show the face behind the brand.

“I really wanted you guys to see the person behind this brand, not just the products… This one hurt so bad.”

She acknowledged that while she often keeps her personal challenges off social media, this moment broke her — emotionally and professionally.
Owning Her Mistake

In a rare moment of vulnerability and accountability, she admitted she may have misstepped at the port of entry:

“I’ve come to the fact that me also, I messed up. I mean, this is the USA. I could have just told them the truth.”

Despite the setback, her message ended on a hopeful note, as she urged her supporters to stand by her and promised to keep moving forward:

“I know this is one of the ways the devil will try to make me doubt a lot of things, but I know that God is aware. I will be fine.”

Social Media Reactions Pour In

The story quickly gained traction online, with users expressing a mix of sympathy, frustration, and lessons learned:

@nwunye__bigman1: “Didn’t you guys make inquiries to know the visa that’s applicable for doing exhibitions in the USA? Lawlessness has eaten deep into our system…”

@CLEAN FOOD STUFF IN LAGOS: “I had this same experience in the UK. Detained for 20 hours, given 15 minutes to leave voluntarily. I still have phobia till today.”

@Bloomphyna: “I’m so sorry stranger, this too shall pass. You’ll recover everything you’ve lost in 100 folds, in Jesus name. Amen.”

@Sonia Kats: “Lord, You waste nothing. Elevate Your daughter the way only You can.”

What You Should Know

This incident highlights a critical issue for business travelers: Always be transparent about your travel purpose, ensure your visa matches your intentions, and be mindful of what you post publicly—especially when applying for or entering countries with strict immigration policies.

There was a report released by the American Embassy in Abuja which claimed Nigerians top the list when it comes to lying and deceit/misinformation regarding Visa applications and it seems true.

That is the new rule now

Most people will lambast the US and spread misinformation on their platform and they will still want to go there.

Good for her.

A B1/B2 visa is for temporary visits — business meetings (B1) or tourism/medical reasons (B2). You are not allowed to work, receive payment from a U.S. source, enroll in school, or engage in any form of employment or long-term stay. Misusing the visa for work or business transactions can result in visa cancellation and affect future U.S. travel. Always follow the terms of your visa to avoid serious immigration consequences.

Eyah Nigerians too like anyhowness . B1 visa is limited to business meetings, negotiating contracts and not actual business activities that will earn you money like the trade fair she was coming to do. A clear violation of her visa.

1. She didnt have a "valid" visa. She had a current visa incompatible with the purpose for which she sought entry,

2. Misrepresentation... she earned herself a 10-year visa ban.

3. As usual with the Nigerian, the devil is needlessly blamed for a problem she willfully caused, while invoking 'god', who is fine with a little white lie here and there.

How many Nigerians have you seen or heard chant "de*th to America, de*th to Israel" on social media. Yes, many Nigerians don't support US policies on how the treat Africans, and Israeli policies on occupied lands, that's not tantamount to wishing de*th to America and de*th to Israel.

So the US wants to control our thoughts and minds before the grant us visa? So we must support every US policy before they deemed us fit to visit their country? Maybe they would start demanding we show support for LGBQ before they grant us visa to visit the US.
Land of the free indeed.

Mind you, in this case, I don't blame the immigration officers for deporting this lady. Lying, dishonesty and deceit are cultural norms in Nigeria, we tend to lie, even when it's unnecessary. Here are some examples of cultural lies; when we are poor, we say we are rich, when we are sick, we say we are strong. We lie in Visa applications when it's is utterly unnecessary.

She ought to have applied for an E1 visa. That is the visa used for trade purposes. This would have tallied with her purpose of visit.

Obey the laws of USA you will be fine, make sure that you tell them the truth when you attend visa interview, on getting to USA don't overstay.Respect their laws, many Nigerians took them for granted in the past, some travelled to USA with a B1/B2 visa ,on getting their they overstay and want to change it to student visa and many more, note that all this anomalies is what the Trump government is correcting. This is commendable.
