The entire leadership of the ADC across all states has officially stepped down to facilitate the transition of the party structure to the 2027 opposition coalition.

The Convener of the League of Northern Democrats and coalition party leader Umar Ardo has raised concerns about potential obstacles to the planned merger with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that many state-level ADC leaders refuse to vacate their positions before their terms expire.

Speaking to Daily Trust, Dr. Ardo outlined the complexities of merging with an existing political party rather than registering a new one, arguing that fusion creates vulnerability to external manipulation.

"If you say you fuse into a political party, you have actually opened your flanks wide, wider than going to register a political party, to external influence, external manipulation, and even external mischief," Ardo explained.

He contrasted this approach with establishing a new party, stating: "Instead of you to deal with the law, which is in registering a political party, and ensuring that you fulfill all the requirements of the law in the eyes of the public, you would rather have a transactional politics in which you deal with several people."

Ardo revealed significant resistance from current ADC executives who won their positions in December 2022 and plan to serve their full terms.

"There are owners of the ADC; there are executives that have been elected in December 2022. Many of them in many states are saying that they will not leave until their term ends in December 2026, by which time primaries had already been concluded," he disclosed.


The coalition leader warned this timeline could create serious problems. "This is going to be a big source of problem that could later result into litigations; you don't need that," he cautioned.

He also expressed worry that the merger framework would inadvertently exclude important segments of potential opposition supporters.


According to Dr. Ardo, the merger strategy faces a fundamental strategic flaw in its composition and appeal to different categories of opposition members.

He explained that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) would primarily attract candidates and their immediate supporters, creating a party structure dominated by political aspirants and their loyalists.

Dr. Ardo identified a critical gap in the merger approach, noting that independent-minded individuals who are dissatisfied with the current political situation would find themselves without a suitable political home.

He emphasized that the exclusionary effect of this candidate-dominated structure indicates that many potential opposition members would remain outside the merged party due to the dominance of particular political figures and their followers. He warned that this approach would fail to accommodate the diverse range of opposition sentiments across the political spectrum.
