In a series of baffling decisions that have left many Nigerians scratching their heads, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s growing interest in the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia is raising serious questions and concerns.

Public schools in Abuja the capital and Tinubu’s own seat of power have been shut for months due to unpaid teachers' salaries. Students in the Federal Capital Territory have been left idle, with no end in sight

Before the dust from that controversy could settle, another move followed: the planned export of Nigerian doctors to Saint Lucia. This comes at a time when Nigeria’s healthcare system is severely overstretched. Across the country, public hospitals are plagued by a chronic shortage of medical personnel. Long queues, overwhelmed doctors, and under-equipped facilities have become the norm. Patients are often left unattended for hours, sometimes days due to the glaring lack of qualified hands.

The question on many lips is simple: why is President Tinubu prioritizing Saint Lucia over urgent domestic crises?

Critics argue that these moves signal a disturbing detachment from the real issues affecting everyday Nigerians. While diplomatic relations and international cooperation are vital in a globalized world, they cannot and should not come at the expense of citizens' basic rights to education and healthcare.

For a nation grappling with underfunded schools, a brain-drained health sector, and widespread economic hardship, the optics of sending doctors to saint Lucia and offering scholarships to foreign nationals are troubling. Nigerians are asking: What exactly is the nature of this newfound relationship with Saint Lucia? And more importantly, who does it benefit?

Saint Lucia is no longer a drug country right?

Tinubu can read the handwriting on the wall. He's already prepping up St. Lucia to be his safehaven for exile when he's voted out in 2027. I won't be surprised if he's purchased some luxurious villa at the carribean island.

He should just adopt saint Lucia as his origin, since there's controversy surrounding the one he claims.

I keep wondering why Tinubu is so fixated with a country that is not even up to the smallest local government in Nigeria. A country with a population of 179,285 is what Agbadorians are celebrating.

If 'knowing a jack about governance' means running the country aground in less than two years, then I’d gladly stick with someone who hasn’t mastered that art. As for Saint Lucia,, thanks for the unsolicited geography lesson, but maybe tell Tinubu to focus on fixing the crumbling economy and rising insecurity before throwing stones across the ocean.
