Boss, I can't record and allow them see me, the consequences would be out of this world, they might seize my phone or worst still land me lots of slaps before throwing me inside their van. I'm always calm when dealing with them, to avoid unforseen circumstances.
This is how to act when with police.

Always avoid every police check point because their aim is to obtain you.

Then that means you gave yourself to the police sir

The only documents you should have in your car is CMR, vehicle licence, insurance, proof of ownership, road worthiness, testing form, and a copy of your driver's license...

Agreement papers or whatever should be at home sir
Right from my previous cars, I have always been carrying my agreement papers among my car papers, because they always ask for It. This time around, when they saw that I bought the car from a car stand as "Nigerian used" they asked for "Authority to sell" which I have never ever heard before, maybe because I bought this particular car on a car stand, because my previous cars I bought none from a car stand. Right now I'm contemplating doing another agreement papers, the one made with a type writer, because if I continue using the car stand agreement paper, I might encounter same exact scenario anytime soon.

You're so thoughtful, I never thought about this as that instant. Truly, I'm not supposed to be the one with the authority to sell, but the car stand. I never really thought of this, I swear. You're a genius, but unfortunately I'm too scared to go to the police to make this report, I wish I'm half the man or have half of the heart to do this. 😢

But boss, is it In anyway possible for me to do an affidavit for loss of agreement paper between the very first owner and the second owner whom sold directly to me? Would such affidavit hold?
Nah you dey fear dey beg police.....leave the car with them ,they will be the one calling you to come Cari Ur car before dpo see Ur moto....or leave the car and call them out on ppro handle on SM,so far you know the station and officers.... When you bej police ,u give them power, act unbothered, they will demand less.

Always show police only your license, your vehicle papers like yearly renewal and roadworthiness only. Three papers only. They won’t ask you any questions. But once you carry all those agreements or change of ownership you are setting yourself up. I have jeep that I have used for more than 4 years which I bought from another person. All papers are always renewed in the original owners name. Police will check your papers and ask you to go. Thank me later
You may find it hard to get away with highway police one day if the original owner don't come to your defense. So long the name on the papers is not bearing your surname, it may be for your siblings, father or mother etc, it is always best to do change of ownership to your name. Except the original owner name papers is available to attend to calls whenever the need arises.

Sad one though.
The best thing you need to do now is to completely register the car with a new plate number.

Anything relating to the old owner should be discarded asap. Let your name fully reflect on the car reg, this will save you a lot of issues from the police.
Re: Police Took 80,000 From Me Yesterday, Because Of Absent This Paper. by SAMAJ: 4:49pm On Jul 04, 2025
The only thing that police can request on a motor vehicle and from the driver are as follows:

1. Vehicle License
2. Driver License
3. Vehicle Insurance Certificate.
and probably;
4. Certificate of roadworthiness.

They can only ask for proof of ownership only if the vehicle is suspected to be stolen and it's not to be asked on the road.

They saw you as a novice and just took advantage of you
Next time, ask to see the DPO or the DCO and explain your situation to either of them.

OP your ordeal clearly shows the vehicle particulars is not in your name

Go to licensing office and do a change of name of your vehicle documents.

Or get another licence plates.

Full stop!
The most sensible advice that I have seen here. I worked with Motor Licensing office in the past. Please take this advice. Change the number plate and register the new one in your name. Case closed! You will need some papers to do this including the original proof of ownership. You must, however, clear any pending bill on the current vehicle license. Ire o!

I asked a car dealer about getting a new plate number for a used car & he said changing plate number for cars is not possible for new plate number unless old plate number, only change of ownership on documents is possible with new plate number.

That statement alone, completely got total control of me, and I had to do the necessity.

There is something fishy about Ur case, you don't have any business with the first seller neither does he with you. So far the tramsfer of ownership document is available,I have no prob....I thought u said u bought from a car stand, they should be the ones to give you all u need.

They made you use a POS so the funds wont be traced to them and they can deny it. So Sad My paper just expired this July and I am already processing it. I dont even live in Nigeria, but I dont joke with them. I have a file that has everything...police letter of sale and all. I was stopped at Agodi. I gave the guy the entire file lol. He later picked the one he wanted to see and let me go.

My issue with Naija Police...they can stop you even if you did not commit any traffic crime. That is not the way it is done in the West unless the Police is a rogue.

Good afternoon Nairalanders,

I was driving yesterday afternoon, when I was stopped by the police, they inspected my papers and noticed that I bought my car at a car stand "used" so they asked me for a document named "authority to sell" I was surprised because I haven't ever had of that before, even though this Is my 4th car. They then proceeded to ask me for agreement paper between the first owner and the previous owner that sold to me. Which I don't have, but I have every other documents from the immediate owner, and have none from the very first owner, except the motor receipt, that they used to buy the motor from car stand.

They took my car to the station, and demanded 400k, I pleaded with them for almost an hour until they accepted 80,000. They told me they need cash, I withdrew the money and gave them the cash.

When I got out of the station I confided with a friend and narrated everything to him as it happened and asked him for help In other to avoid such a scenario from happening again.

He told me that, the paper that I wrote and signed on the car stand before leaving with the car, on the day I bought the car "aggremenr paper" was what led them asking for the "authority to sell" paper. He told me that nevertheless, they have no business asking me for the agreement paper between the old, and immediate seller that sold to me and the other previous owner.

He then advised me to go and re_do another agreement paper, the ones they normally type with old type writer, and take it to who sold the car to me to sign, so that when next they see me they won't ask me for authority to sell, as my agreement papers won't indicate that I bought the car from a car stand "used" but it would seem like I bought the car directly from a regular user.

I did as he told me but I'm still worried, as they would still stop me to take more money from me in the future because I don't have the agreement paper between the immediate previous owner and the former owner that sold to him. They're always fond of asking for such, all my previous cars I have the aggrement papers of previous owners to current owners that sold to me, please I need advice on how to go about this agreement papers, I have gone to the car stand severely and they gave me the contact of whom they bought the vehicle from before selling to me, I called and he told me that he had traveled out, I need help please, help me.

Would an affidavit of "loss of agreement paper from who sold to me directly and the first user solve this issue? Please help I'm so worried.

Below is the 80,000 I withdrew and used in settling the police yest afternoon, I paid 2800 as charges to the POS girl.

When you buy used vehicle, you just need to take the agreement between seller and buyer to do proof of ownership. Shikena

What a nonsense with our police.

I figured out that they're all the same, they're all normally very close to their Oga's, in which I know for sure that he won't be able to do anything about the issue or order them to refund me, but if you can assure me that if I should report I'm going to fully get my money, even half of it then I will go there first thing tomorrow morning to make this report.

When they took me to the station, they earlier they earlier insisted I write a statement, and I presume such statement might still go to the oga table which he won't debunk so far money comes out from it. I don't know if you're getting my point.

Even when they forcefully took your car key from you? You won't still follow them? You would just allow them to drive your car to the station?

The best way to deal with the police with this is (if it is within your city) ask them to charge you to court.
They have to do that within 24 Hours of your arrest AND they must state exactly what they have arrested you for.

Trust me, this is the LAST thing our Police want.

A question then would be asked is if they suspect that then car was stolen!

Don't go to a Division, they will intimidate you further. Indicate the State of incidence and will forward the contact to reach....Good luck.
Please forward the contact to me, It happened In Delta state. Truly, would they summon the officers? Please send me the contact.

That's a big lie. I just got a new plate number for my car 2 weeks ago, i ditched the old plates because they weren't carrying my name, i had change of ownership document when i bought the car as naija used, but police stopped me once cos of that, i settled them with 3k or so.

I woke up one day and decided to do away with the old registration and get a new plate and documents that will reflect my name. So easy and fast to do

When I did my papers, I pinned all of them together, eg road worthiness, cmr, proof of ownership, general motor receipt, insurance etc.

My immediate car before this present car that I'm using they took 50k from me because they asked for the motor receipt that was used to buy the car directly from a car stand, which I don't have. Since then I make sure that I go with other documents because they might ask at anytime. After going through my papers and they noticed that it's correct I they always look for a way to bring something up to extort me even though they know that my papers are correct. Because they have the advantage, as they're many in numbers, and arguing with them would seem like fighting with crowd, which is impossible.

It is because of situations like these.. you must not give Nigerian police any room to notice any atom of fear in your face when you are with them.
You're right, the police that was with me and demanding for my key, I refused and he couldn't do anything, not until two others stepped out from their vehicle and forcefully took it from me.
