There is something fishy about Ur case, you don't have any business with the first seller neither does he with you. So far the tramsfer of ownership document is available,I have no prob....I thought u said u bought from a car stand, they should be the ones to give you all u need.
They asked for the agreement paper between the first seller and the second seller that sold directly to me which I don't have, they told me that all the history of the vehicle started from me, which isn't entirely true because I have every document of the second seller that sold to me at home, including the car receipt of the first seller, that bought the car directly from a car stand.

There is nothing like agreement to sell letter , all you need is your proof of ownership and that's where it's ends

Sad one though.
The best thing you need to do now is to completely register the car with a new plate number.

Anything relating to the old owner should be discarded asap. Let your name fully reflect on the car reg, this will save you a lot of issues from the police.
I did a new plate number and I have all my documents intact, what they were asking was "authority to sell" which I have never heard of before, even as this is my 4th car, also they asked for the change of ownership between the very first user and the second user whom sold to me.

In all my life and day to day existence, and In my years of driving, like I stated earlier this is my 4th car, and I haven't heard of such papers ever before, I have been so devastated since yesterday.
Never tell the police you've never heard of a document they asked to see.
It'll easily give you away as a novice and, hence, an easy target

Just tell them it's not amongst the documents a car owner needs to have, whether you know about the document or not.

I just confirmed now that that is not true. Whether old or new plate number, you can do change of ownership, once the chasis exists on the autoreg portal and you will get a new plate number and new documents in your name.
Thank u

That's a big lie. I just got a new plate number for my car 2 weeks ago, i ditched the old plates because they weren't carrying my name, i had change of ownership document, but police stopped me once cos of that. tho i settled them with 3k or so.
I woke up one day and decided to do away with the old registration and get a new plate and documents that will reflect my name. So easy and fast to do
Thanks

If the plate number is new and it reflects your name ehn, Then u don't need to be carrying changer of ownership or agreement alongside the car documents. Leave those documents at home

This is how to act when with police.

Always avoid every police check point because their aim is to obtain you.
The last time I recorded, I think it was earlier this year, they forcefully seized my phone and ordered me to delete the video which I did.

Good afternoon Nairalanders,

I was driving yesterday afternoon, when I was stopped by the police, they inspected my papers and noticed that I bought my car at a car stand "used" so they asked me for a document named "authority to sell" I was surprised because I haven't ever had of that before, even though this Is my 4th car. They then proceeded to ask me for agreement paper between the first owner and the previous owner that sold to me. Which I don't have, but I have every other documents from the immediate owner, and have none from the very first owner, except the motor receipt, that they used to buy the motor from car stand.

They took my car to the station, and demanded 400k, I pleaded with them for almost an hour until they accepted 80,000. They told me they need cash, I withdrew the money and gave them the cash.

When I got out of the station I confided with a friend and narrated everything to him as it happened and asked him for help In other to avoid such a scenario from happening again.

He told me that, the paper that I wrote and signed on the car stand before leaving with the car, on the day I bought the car "aggremenr paper" was what led them asking for the "authority to sell" paper. He told me that nevertheless, they have no business asking me for the agreement paper between the old, and immediate seller that sold to me and the other previous owner.

He then advised me to go and re_do another agreement paper, the ones they normally type with old type writer, and take it to who sold the car to me to sign, so that when next they see me they won't ask me for authority to sell, as my agreement papers won't indicate that I bought the car from a car stand "used" but it would seem like I bought the car directly from a regular user.

I did as he told me but I'm still worried, as they would still stop me to take more money from me in the future because I don't have the agreement paper between the immediate previous owner and the former owner that sold to him. They're always fond of asking for such, all my previous cars I have the aggrement papers of previous owners to current owners that sold to me, please I need advice on how to go about this agreement papers, I have gone to the car stand severely and they gave me the contact of whom they bought the vehicle from before selling to me, I called and he told me that he had traveled out, I need help please, help me.

Would an affidavit of "loss of agreement paper from who sold to me directly and the first user solve this issue? Please help I'm so worried.

Below is the 80,000 I withdrew and used in settling the police yest afternoon, I paid 2800 as charges to the POS girl.
I am sure that you registered the car plate with your name

Whoever that did the registration for you is supposed to tell you to go police extract which clearly states that you bought the car as Nigeria used

The police extract (from the police) coupled with change of ownership (you can easily get this done at any local government secretariat computer centres) will save you all these stress

The only thing that police can request on a motor vehicle and from the driver are as follows:

1. Vehicle License
2. Driver License
3. Vehicle Insurance Certificate.
and probably;
4. Certificate of roadworthiness.

They can only ask for proof of ownership only if the vehicle is suspected to be stolen and it's not to be asked on the road.

They saw you as a novice and just took advantage of you
Next time, ask to see the DPO or the DCO and explain your situation to either of them.
Thank you, I have learnt a lot here already. Someone even suggested that I report the issue on Twitter, I'm really not certain if it would yield anything positive but I would give it a trial. Thank you once again.

Never challenge a police officer whether armed or unarmed;but you have to know where their check points are and know how to avoid them.

The most sensible advice that I have seen here. I worked with Motor Licensing office in the past. Please take this advice. Change the number plate and register the new one in your name. Case closed! You will need some papers to do this including the original proof of ownership. You must, however, clear any pending bill on the current vehicle license. Ire o!
Immediately I bought the car, I did another plate number and all the papers are in my name, every single detail, including the proof of ownership and cmr.

They asked for 'authority to sell' which I don't have and they took my car to the station.

When you buy used vehicle, you just need to take the agreement between seller and buyer to do proof of ownership. Shikena

You seem naive & not willing to depart from it. If this story isn't made up, you are an accessory to your problem.

First, you aren't supposed to have any other document in the vehicle other than the proof of ownership, vehicle license, insurance & every other document given to you when the car was registered.

You are one of those that embolden the police to continue to extort innocent motorists. Apparently, they prayed on your ignorance.

Even after the incident, you are still acting like a notice & behaving like a 7 year old kid.. you hold the key to you boldness & confidence. Fear only exists in the mind & until you are ready to conquer it, you will continue to wallow in ignorance. Mind you, no one has advised you to fight the police but just stand your ground & get a lawyer if they keep your car at the police station. It not only illegal but malicious & your lawyer can sue for damages.

Police surely know their boundary but will fleece any weak man like you.
God bless you for this.
This guy's cho cho cho and cowardice dey very annoying and I've been looking out for where someone will reprimand him.
I can't believe there's still an adult like him in Nigeria, even after having driven 4 cars on Nigerian roads, according to him.

The best way to deal with the police with this is (if it is within your city) ask them to charge you to court.
They have to do that within 24 Hours of your arrest AND they must state exactly what they have arrested you for.

Trust me, this is the LAST thing our Police want.

A question then would be asked is if they suspect that then car was stolen!
Thank you sir, I have learnt a new one today, I have screenshot and copied this advice, in case I forgot, thank you so very much.

✓ They refused transfer and insisted I must pay in cash, so I had to go to the POS to withdraw the cash.
what about receipt , indicating where you paid cash to and to whom? I mean this is 2025? Unless you yourself are into scamming, there is no reason why you should not have obtained that at least to stop other cops from stoping and defrauding you on another day or at least on your way back. If you don't at least have proof of payment, what they did was scam you.🙄

When I got to the station one of the officer showed me a white Venza and told me that the owner has completely lost It, and If I don't act immediately my car would go same way, I won't be able to get my car again even if I got the money that they're requesting and demanding for.

That statement alone, completely got total control of me, and I had to do the necessity.

Then that means you gave yourself to the police sir

The only documents you should have in your car is CMR, vehicle licence, insurance, proof of ownership, road worthiness, testing form, and a copy of your driver's license...

Agreement papers or whatever should be at home si
Testing form from where again? Una don come again.
The police has no business with any testing form
CMR enforcement is currently under suspension; so the police has no right at the moment to ask for it

Bro you don't need all these document for you to avoid police wahara. Just go to licence office and get changed of ownership using the document given to you by the car dealer, by that I mean purchase agreement paper/Car purchase receipt once that is done. Licencing office will give you change of ownership then remove all other documents in you car and just use below document to drive your car both police or custom officers will not worry you again. These are the necessary document to have in your car while driving.
1. Drivers licence
2. Proof of ownership/change of ownership
3. Car licence
4. Insurance certificate.
5. Plate number issuance.Certificate
6. Road worthiness certificate
7. Custom document not mandatory but incase you are travelling out of town and you meet custom officers.
Above is the only document needed and with this you don't have any business with police.
