You really understand this thing.
All ye needs is police extract and he's good to go.

yesloaded:
I am sure that you registered the car plate with your name

Whoever that did the registration for you is supposed to tell you to go police extract which clearly states that you bought the car as Nigeria used

The police extract (from the police) coupled with change of ownership (you can easily get this done at any local government secretariat computer centres) will save you all these stress

I have the police extract from the police, change of ownership too. In fact I did a new plate number as soon as I got the vehicle, so the CMR, proof of ownership and everything else are all in my name.

You acted the right way.

Never challenge a police officer whether armed or unarmed;but you have to know where their check points are and know how to avoid them.
The road to my house is one way, once they're there I can't avoid them.

what about receipt , indicating where you paid cash to and to whom? I mean this is 2025? Unless you yourself are into scamming, there is no reason why you should not have obtained that at least to stop other cops from stoping and defrauding you on another day or at least on your way back. If you don't at least have proof of payment, what they did was scam you.🙄
But I have a screenshot of the transfer I did, that's enough proof, the POS I withdraw the cash from its just outside their station.

When I got to the station one of the officer showed me a white Venza and told me that the owner has completely lost It, and If I don't act immediately my car would go same way, I won't be able to get my car again even if I got the money that they're requesting and demanding for.

That statement alone, completely got total control of me, and I had to do the necessity.
May I ask you. What would have happened if you left that vehicle at the police station, asked for an impound receipt, then quietly walked home to go consult your solicitor?. Why are Nigerians quick to pay bribe?.

What if they asked you for the car particulars?

This happened to me while traveling to Ile-ife last year. There are more than 10 Police checking points on that route due to the bad roads.

After buying my car, I didn't do change of ownership. So, after asking for my licence etc. Everything fine. They asked for car documents. They saw that the name was different from from drivers licence. So, they asked for change of ownership. I couldn't provide it.

They entered my car, we drove to a POS and I gave them 30k after much talk cos I was late to where I was going. They later adviced me to have someone ready to always call as the owner of the vehicle incase of next time. This person will know my car details. So, when police demand to hear from the real owner since you're traveling, the person will be available to help.

I laughed so hard. It's crazy. You can do what you said within lagos or town where there are people. When you're face to face with police on the express. You'll know fighting them isn't worth it.

Always show police only your license, your vehicle papers like yearly renewal and roadworthiness only. Three papers only. They won’t ask you any questions. But once you carry all those agreements or change of ownership you are setting yourself up. I have jeep that I have used for more than 4 years which I bought from another person. All papers are always renewed in the original owners name. Police will check your papers and ask you to go. Thank me later

So what if you withdrew money from POS? What evidence is there that you in fact paid the cash to the Police afterwards? And for what purpose? ? undecided

Bro you don't need all these document for you to avoid police wahara. Just go to licence office and get changed of ownership using the document given to you by the car dealer, by that I mean purchase agreement paper/Car purchase receipt once that is done. Licencing office will give you change of ownership then remove all other documents in you car and just use below document to drive your car both police or custom officers will not worry you again. These are the necessary document to have in your car while driving.
1. Drivers licence
2. Proof of ownership/change of ownership
3. Car licence
4. Insurance certificate.
5. Plate number issuance.Certificate
6. Road worthiness certificate
7. Custom document not mandatory but incase you are travelling out of town and you meet custom officers.
Above is the only document needed and with this you don't have any business with police.
6
I have all of the above documents you made mentioned above, when I did a new plate number few days after acquiring the car, I was given all of the documents you mentioned.

My papers are 100% correct, they demanded for the "authority to sell paper" which I have not heard before, which I think it's because I got the car from a car stand "Nigerian used"
They tricked you! It was a scam. Oga anything motor, as long as it hasn't been flagged as stolen or under contention na scam them scam you which was why they opposed transfer because of the implication. Sorry dude,I can even drive around with expired papers and drivers license highest I will give is 2k.

Police don ask you for engine number before?
If your engine number doesn't reflect on your car particulars. Hehe.

One had to use chalk to clear where my engine number is on my engine one day. I shock. Cos I don't even know there was a number there. They are mostly those rogue policemen on the expressway. One useless hausa policeman. I can't forget that experience. Parted with 10k that night.

As the birds learn how to fly without perching so does the hunter learn how to shoot without missing.

Your duty is to avoid any police checkpoint because their major aim is to extort motorist.

Boss, I can't record and allow them see me, the consequences would be out of this world, they might seize my phone or worst still land me lots of slaps before throwing me inside their van. I'm always calm when dealing with them, to avoid unforseen circumstances.
Then get a dashcam. It's less than the 82,800 you spent. Just between 30-35k depend on the make.

If you had it - it would have automatically recorded them, then you upload the video on Twitter and tag people like VDM and other human right activist. By now the whole social media would have been trending with their ugly faces.

They would be arrested, dismissed and your money returned back to you.

Also, whenever you're stopped by the police, act very bold and bossy. Don't let them spot any kind or form of fear in you. If they do, they'll exploit it until they successfully milk you.

Sorry for your loss.

Good afternoon Nairalanders,

I was driving yesterday afternoon, when I was stopped by the police, they inspected my papers and noticed that I bought my car at a car stand "used" so they asked me for a document named "authority to sell" I was surprised because I haven't ever had of that before, even though this Is my 4th car. They then proceeded to ask me for agreement paper between the first owner and the previous owner that sold to me. Which I don't have, but I have every other documents from the immediate owner, and have none from the very first owner, except the motor receipt, that they used to buy the motor from car stand.

They took my car to the station, and demanded 400k, I pleaded with them for almost an hour until they accepted 80,000. They told me they need cash, I withdrew the money and gave them the cash.

When I got out of the station I confided with a friend and narrated everything to him as it happened and asked him for help In other to avoid such a scenario from happening again.

He told me that, the paper that I wrote and signed on the car stand before leaving with the car, on the day I bought the car "aggremenr paper" was what led them asking for the "authority to sell" paper. He told me that nevertheless, they have no business asking me for the agreement paper between the old, and immediate seller that sold to me and the other previous owner.

He then advised me to go and re_do another agreement paper, the ones they normally type with old type writer, and take it to who sold the car to me to sign, so that when next they see me they won't ask me for authority to sell, as my agreement papers won't indicate that I bought the car from a car stand "used" but it would seem like I bought the car directly from a regular user.

I did as he told me but I'm still worried, as they would still stop me to take more money from me in the future because I don't have the agreement paper between the immediate previous owner and the former owner that sold to him. They're always fond of asking for such, all my previous cars I have the aggrement papers of previous owners to current owners that sold to me, please I need advice on how to go about this agreement papers, I have gone to the car stand severely and they gave me the contact of whom they bought the vehicle from before selling to me, I called and he told me that he had traveled out, I need help please, help me.

Would an affidavit of "loss of agreement paper from who sold to me directly and the first user solve this issue? Please help I'm so worried.

Below is the 80,000 I withdrew and used in settling the police yest afternoon, I paid 2800 as charges to the POS girl.
go licence office, they know more about paper, they will advise you what to do, if is paper they will assist once you pay them.
