Trailer Crushes 17 To Death On Calabar-Itu Highway by NaijaCover(op): 4:25am On Jul 05, 2025
Tragedy struck Friday afternoon on the failed Calabar-Itu federal highway as 17 persons were crushed to death in a fatal crash involving a containerized trailer and a commercial bus.

Eyewitnesses told newsmen that the accident occurred when a 40-foot trailer veered off its lane, crushing a 16-seater bus travelling from Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to Calabar.

The eyewitness, identified simply as Emmanuel, said the trailer landed directly on the bus, killing all 17 occupants, 16 passengers and the driver, on the spot.

“There were no survivors. The trailer completely smashed the bus. It was a horrific scene,” Emmanuel recounted.

He blamed the accident on the deplorable condition of the Calabar-Itu highway, which he said has been undergoing repairs for more than 15 years without any meaningful progress.

As of the time of filing this report, the corpses of the victims had been evacuated to an undisclosed mortuary by community youths and concerned individuals.

Efforts to reach officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police in Calabar for comments were unsuccessful, as neither agency was willing to speak on the incident.

This is a very sad story. May God comfort their families.

The FG still remains the biggest enablers of this madness. Nigeria truck drivers are the most heartless human on the highway. They drive and do anyhow at the high way without the consideration of other road users.

The day the FG start holding them responsible with heavy fine I believe all this will stop. They will intentionally caused accident, escape from the scene knowing their company's insurance will pay for the goods only and leave the victims families in sorrow without a kobo compensation.

And that woman scooping the victims blood is for what exactly?

These trailers and their accidents just too terrible, they usually carry innocent people along most times. Our roads need to be fixed and the drivers need proper skill and mental evaluation regularly before being allowed to drive.

Hmmm ..... horrific scene.... but I'm terrified by the woman in blue who dashed to the scene to scoop blood. Ritualists territory. May stopping in this community never be our portion.

So this is the highway..... where speeding is not possible. Fifteen years in a state of repairs ...normal ..acceptable by different administrations.... condolences will be pouring in...but business as usual.

Most times, these trailer drivers in Nigeria do these things deliberately.
The way they drive and intimidate other drivers says it all.
Seems they have covenant to shed blood when they start driving trucks in Nigeria.

It's sad that successive governments have decided to not rehabilitate that road despite outcries over the years. It is the only road linking Akwa Ibom to Cross River State, and has been in a very deplorable state since Obasanjo's tenure!
What is the life of an ordinary Nigerian worth to the Nigerian political leaders? Well, I can tell you they rate it very low; even lower than an adult cattle!
It is sad that these people had to die like this while hustling just to live and get by. May their souls rest in peace!

Trailers and tankers should get stricter roadworthiness checks than regular cars. I don't even think they are subjected to the same level of checks they give to regular cars before getting roadworthiness especially in Lagos and they cause more accidents than most private vehicles.

Just a few weeks ago, a tanker fell around Ibafo and started gushing fuel immediately right in front of me o, by the time i was returning back to lagos i noticed about three cars were already burnt.... so how securely are these vehicles built if a single fall can lead to such a disaster?

I think government should bring tighter regulations and enforcement or this trailers, if possible they should regulate the loads they carry and how they are being built especially the fuel tankers, small fall petrol don full every where.

Your comment is not apropos, I don't know if it's because you didn't read the op or you didn't view the picture. You should be blaming the FG and State govt for leaving the road in a deplorable state, would the truck have fallen if the road was smooth?

You guys should try to read the op before commenting, the obvious cause of the accident is the bad road, not overspeeding.

May their souls rest in peace. Human lives has lost meaning in Nigeria.

The bus just left the state of the man who said he is decamping from PDP to APC because he wants alignment with the centre. The centre that couldn't fix the road even when the state was aligned to the centre under PDP.

Bus was heading to Cross River, a state that had aligned with the centre under the incompetent Ayade, yet the road has been a death trap for over 10 years.

It's sad to see people talk about politics when lives are at stake. After Jota's death, no one’s talking politics or blaming leaders and parties. Some of you folks needs a brain reset.

RIP to the deceased

Failed promises of APC government.... Buhari awarded contract for the dualization of the road... Tinubu came to Calabar and promised to complete the road during his campaign, yet nothing has been done meaningfully. 2027 is coming and they will use that road again to campeign. Evil people we have as leaders.
