Definition of illiterate: unable to read or write.

I still don't know why the North always top this list despite the fact that majority of Northerners can read and write in Arabic language.

This is a region that has a working system before the arrival of the colonial master. They have their schools already and this is the reason till tomorrow the Nigeria Army motto is written in Arabic.
I really wish the northern leaders could use the same energy they use in encouraging Arabic education for Western education, trust me, the north will grow faster because they have the numbers and a greater number will contribute to the development of the region

Lol imaginary statistics you don't even know the number of people in your own states since your last census conducted in 2006 over 19 years ago you would now know the number of people that's literate grin

The person who conducted these stats doesn't know what he/she is doing, cause this is just to glorify the south west, if you know the illiteracy rate in this south west, he/she wouldn't come here with this stats and put southwest in 6th, they're best placed between 4 & 5 position, is it the region where you speak english to some of them and they'll get angry with you or ignore you just because they couldn't speak or understand english, same with the northerners, the south west is benefiting from the large population in lagos state that have mixed of tribes in there, that's more reason they don't travel to seek for work elsewhere apart from Lagos state
Lies!

I'm not from Lagos but I can tell you for free that the statistics is correct 💯. That doesn't mean there are no illiterates in Lagos but are very few. And the influx of people both locally and internationally actually contributed to that.

Also , an average lagosian would rather travel abroad to seek greener pasture than travel within. This is because Lagos, as of today, remains the most developed state in Nigeria. Forget that Abuja is the federal capital, Lagos has the largest economy and infrastructure!.

As for academics, I give it to Anambra but our igbo brothers have this enterprise nature in their DNA. So, they'll rather do business and import containers of goods for sell to be more comfortable than live their whole life answering yes sir in one sector.

North is still redeemable. Yes, it is. Their leaders need to really come together to help their youth so they narrative can be changed. This is the kind of change I had expected people like Alh. Atiku to bring about and he has the opportunity and the authority to do it (if he really wants to).

They can "recite" not read or write. Only a few can actually read Arabic. Simple truth.

1. So, the average Northern child can communicate fluently in Arabic -- speak with ease the Arabic language-- is what you are trying to have us believe, right undecided

2. What has being informed about international gossip to do with literacy? undecided
Yes,an average northerner can understand and communicate effectively with the Arabic language.

Being informed and staying abreast of happenings and events both locally and around the globe is not gossips but education

You should be more concerned about the thugs keeping you in a cage every Monday.

No amount of insecurity in Arewa land, you will never see a Arewa leader leaving his region to another region.

Unlike you people, your oyaneze leader was return back home from Lagos.
But millions leave for begging (beggars) across southern streets while few that claims to have a job end up as truck-pusher, bike-men, suckaway packer etc across the land

rote learning is actually different from organized form of learning, many of them can't really put down what they read into writing
Celestialsword:
The fact that you can't read, write or speak ENGLISH LANGUAGE doesn't mean you're an illiterate.

The northerners are schooled in Islamic education as majority of them can read write and speak with it fluently.

To me, they are not illiterate, they are abreast with local and world events as both local and international Media has Islamic coverage

An old Hausa Muslim in the north that doesn't understand the English language is well informed about local and international happenings than an old Man or woman in the east

Educational system that does translate to development of society.

It's not sufficient education, otherwise they should advance their society
How, nearly all the middle east countries are Islamic countries and they are doing well.

It's only in Africa that you see Islamic societies living wretched

Islamic countries has progressed,in terms of economic development than most European countries e.g Qatar,Saudi,UAE,Iran,Iraq, just to mention a few

You are lying! I watched a video not long ago where even the big men in sokoto had to rely on translators when communicating with delegates from Saudi Arabian. The younger ones also watched on amused and could not engage. undecided

2. For my village, there are many old people who sit around pretending to discuss international and local happenings. But any individual who it's with them to listen will quickly realize the discussion compared more to gossip than a literacy discussion. undecided

Being able the read and write in a language should equate to the ability to communicate --speak as well-- proficiently in that language. This is not the case, though, as a majority of Northerners— children included — can't communicate fluently/proficiently in the Arabic language. undecided

1. This is far from the truth as almost half of them are no better than Nigeria. There are 15 Muslim countries in total in the Middle East. undecided

2. Lies! Iran and Iraq are not that much better than Nigeria. When we consider the Arab League countries, we see that the situation in well over half of those countries remains dire. undecided

My guess is that you are from the Northern states and you think that covering up the situation somehow helps your people but all it actually does is help cover up the atrocities of your politicians and religious gods of men — imams, sheikhs, pastors, etc.— who use your heads, and that of our children to eat googooroo and ekpa. Those millions children in the north without a comprehensive education — out-of-school children as well as those in schools where much of they learn is removed from their daily realities —reciting texts and scripts they will never be able to apply to developing and upgrading their lives in their homes and communities are not educated but denied an education worthy of the life they deserve. undecided

This article has been tribalized. Terrorism and politics are different ends of the same snake. Most terrorism are politically motivated. People claiming that western education is bad are educated and spend money to buy weapons which are also the outcome of their said forbidden education. The rode in exhortic cars and forgot that their fore fathers rode on donkeys.
The other weapon they use is religion weapons.
Anybody who can gather people and teach them has a lot of influence on the people he's teaching. He can either confuse them or convince them. Religious leaders are the target of these unscrupulous elements. The moment you can win their hearts. They will win more hearts. I just pray that our people will get wisdom and shun terrorism

This is the problem with you people, just imagine somebody talking about the cause of your problem, you are here throwing a challenge, did Monday sit at home cause students from going to school? Or are the politician and big men in the south east sponsoring sit at home? Just take a look at your region, relax and drink water for it's not well at all.

I would like to know the methodology for how they conducted this study and arrived at these numbers.

It seems a bit too high, but my intuition maybe greatly underestimating the level of illiteracy in the country.
