Russia is seeking support from Laos for its war against Ukraine, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR) reported on July 5.

In a Telegram post, the Defense Intelligence Directorate said Moscow has reached out to the Southeast Asian nation as part of its wider effort to recruit foreign assistance. Russia has already drawn mercenaries from Africa and Asia and deployed military units from North Korea. Now, it is courting so-called “partners” under the guise of humanitarian projects near the Ukrainian border.

Specifically, Russia is looking to bring in engineering units from the Laotian People’s Army to help with demining efforts in Kursk Oblast, near Ukraine’s northeastern border. According to Ukrainian intelligence, up to 50 Laotian sappers could be sent.

Laos is also reportedly providing free support to Russia by organizing rehabilitation programs for wounded Russian soldiers who fought in Ukraine.

Ukrainian intelligence said that under the cover of humanitarian aid, the Kremlin is trying to normalize the presence of foreign military personnel on its territory and, in effect, use them to support combat operations.

HUR had previously reported on June 21 that Russia is forcibly mobilizing Central Asian nationals, luring them with promises of fast money and short-term contracts. Many of these so-called volunteers are quickly killed, Ukrainian officials said.

In April, Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi said Russia is growing its military by 8,000–9,000 troops per month through contract recruitment — totaling 120,000–130,000 annually.

By the end of 2025, the Kremlin hopes to add another 300,000 to 400,000 troops to its occupation force, Ukrainian lawmaker and national security committee member Fedir Venislavskyi said.

China has a population of over 1.3B people and they're Russia's ally, so why is Kremlin turning to a country with a population of just about 8 million to give them soldiers?

A country with almost 150m people cannot fight their own war against Ukraine? Even if mercenaries are also in Ukraine, this means they are losing more soldiers than they're willing to admit.

wait i am not part of the Africans that are fighting wars for Ukraine and Russia. Those Africans do not represent anyone they are just there for business. Africa has no part in the war, we have not defeated our insecurity to begin with.
