Best advice so far and must be mandatory by law from age sixteen both male and female.

Yes, military training instills discipline and patriotism. But I'm at loss how such people who have gone through the rigorous training turn out to be some of the most unpatriotic and corrupt elements in government. In the last decade, only few service chiefs finished their tenure scandal-free. Where is the patriotism is someone who's well paid till his death still goes ahead to steal billions!

It will be very unsafe to recruit more personnel into the military when the military personnel in active duty are complaining of having moles inducted into them by the government.

I saw a video by a military personnel lamenting that the terrorists are using the section 22 of the 48 Laws Of Power against them, only for the government to induct the same captured terrorists into the military, who then leak info, and switch sides on the battlefield.

This is not an army any Nigerian would want to recruit into.

I thought he'd reached retirement age & was relieved statutorily.

What we need is licence to own assault rifles after being certified mentally fit by a doctor & the weapon duly registered to avoid misuse. This is what deters crime abroad & makes criminals to think twice before going out for an operation. Villagers are easily ransacked by gunmen because the villagers are not armed & defenceless. And emergency response is usually not effective & sometimes compromised or sabotaged.

Mandatory military service without legalising gun is rubbish. No matter your military training you are almost helpless against an opponent who is armed to the teeth

That's the TRUTH.

He really dealt with Boko Haram to the extent they say they sue him at the international court of justice.

Kudos to him.

He's truly a genuine Military Officer unlike what we have now.

I made a post about this some weeks ago, surprisingly Nigerians couldn't even engage their minds enough to see the danger in this. I guess the rumours are true after all

https://www.nairaland.com/8459344/how-true-rumours-possible-forced

Lack of information and the habit of "school na scam" has damaged the thinking faculty of the average Nigerian. A matter like this is slowly creeping up on Nigerians and we can't even see it.

Forced conscription is being planned right now as we all fold our hands waiting for the new Zlatan or Oluwa Burna song.

The truth is that on this Herdsmen AKA Boko Haram matter, water Don pass Garri. The people that used terror as a means to Wrestle power from other politicians have found out that the monster that they created has no master and cannot be tamed.

These people are now planning to march you, your siblings and your teenagers to the battle front to die for their sins, to fight and end a situation that THEY STARTED out of their madness for absolute powerr and their blind ethnoreligious hatred
Most countries do this, some up to 2 years, they serve as backup if a war breaks out. Most countries that don't are those with large Armies and backup, example, US and China.

Russia – One year of service for males 18–27.

Finland – 6 to 12 months depending on the branch; also offers civilian service.

Switzerland – Male citizens serve several months with regular refreshers; women may volunteer.

Austria – 6 months military or 9 months civilian service for males.

Greece – Around 9 months of service for men aged 19–45.

Turkey – Mandatory for men, usually 6 to 12 months.

South Korea - Requires male citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 to perform compulsory military service.

Oya no wahala. March your family front to go and fight Boko Haram. Can you compare what those countries you mentioned have done for their citizens to what Nigeria has done for its own?

It's a good idea, the problem is...we don't have the money.

NYSC was originally envisioned as two years of millitary service for young men. After secondary school. Idea dropped because envisioned numbers were too large to make it financially sustainable..and we got the NYSC In its current form instead.
Re: Ex-Army Chief Proposes Mandatory Military Training For Nigerians by JuicyEarth: 2:53pm On Jul 06, 2025
I have always had this line of thought. I support this. Youth should be taught how to handle guns...countries like Israel, South Korea etc adopted this approach. At least two years or three years of mandatory military service. If you want to continue, then you can.

When a job advertisement says three years of post graduate experience, you should them your military experience.

Rubbish suggestion from a clueless man. Mandatory military training to what effect ? The mandatory one year national service for corpers, what has it achieved ? What we should be talking of here is to legalise the possesion of firearms so that there will be some form of deterrence to those murderous fulani herdsmen

Lt.Gen Ihejirika, then buhari and his northern foot soldiers came to mind cry cry when he was decisive with boko haram back then northerners where all over GEJ, a war against boko haram is a war against the north, is anti-north bla bla bla, GEj was forced to remove him. Look at were we are today up north is engulfed with insurgency, the whole country is facing fulanis on every sides probably buhari is happy now..... The present administration just don't care all they understand is 2027 meanwhile the government of today has nothing to show for.

The compulsory military training for citizens is a welcome idea we too many sef. I think it should start from senior second schools nationwide.
When I was in the boarding school we do attend Boys Brigade every Tuesdays and Thursdays I don't even know if it's still active sef, such can help in times of self defense in critical situation such as one-chance in Lagos, Abuja, home invaders, street matters etc

I think it's not a rubbish suggestion bro.
But the NYSC is rubbish though because they do nothing there rather wasting students time for a year.
Military training is for your own good just look and see what going on around, a whole village can't coordinate their selves to wait vigilant against Fulani herdsmen, can't even stage a counter offensive against herdsmen, non has done that. The suggestion for legalizing fire arms is a good idea because when you know that were you are going to attack they have fire arms you will think twice before going but not some people have and some don't it's more like cheating

This is not about forcing anybody to be conscripted, having mandatory military training doesn't mean you have to be conscripted, what do you think is the Strength of the United States and Israel, every university student in the United States undergoes ROTC(Reserve Officers Training Course). It is a mandatory military training exercise. Citizens of Israel are reservists through compulsory military training. Compulsory military training is necessary in a country facing terrorism and other security challenges.

We are not interested in mandatory military service Gen. None of our neighbors are hostile against us or at war or can even contemplate being at war with us. Amotekun can defeat Benin Republic. Is it Cameroon? Abacha show dem shege in Bakassi when he was alive until Obasanjo dashed Bakassi to Cameroon to be in the good books of his friends in London and Washington DC. Is it Chad or Niger? None!

Our military can fight the so-called bandits and terrorists if government really wants to. They don't want to fight it because it's a political tool. Mandatory military service is rubbish!
