The site he did the domain registration also had his information. I know some people like to think they're anonymous online, the truth is you're only anonymous if the person chasing you cannot get you, for a group like the FBI, he was basically a sitting duck.
Even using VPN cannot make you anonymous because the VPN administrator has your actual information and these companies will 99% of the time honor FBI requests for information, especially if it's a case of fraud

For VPN, they don't even ask the company for your IP, it takes lot of time.

They just wait for you to leak your IP address yourself especially when it disconnect and reconnect again. Those few minutes is enough for your IP to leak

It's almost impossible to hide your footprint online especially if it has to do with payments and money transfers forget the false impression crypto gives you are anonymous.

Only way to remain anonymous online is to take on another person's identity entirely without any link or trace to that identity (biodata etc) and remove yourself completely from the scene of crime.

You will still need mules to get the proceed into liquid form to bring to you without meeting you making the invincible process very hard.

In essence, most people that get away with online crime is simply because enforcement wasn't interested in pursuing the case to conclusion. In this case it's Donald Trump, president of USA. FBI can't fold thier hands because the crime was in Lagos Nigeria, you will be dug out of a hole if need be.
