What's the rationale Behind our doctors telling patients not to eat for a few days after a surgery is been carried out on them? If doctors in other parts of the World like In Europe, don't tell their patients so, then why is Nigeria's different? Could it be due to Technology? Can someone please explain to me why Medical Doctors in Nigeria always ask patients not to eat food for some days after having surgery?

If they tell you not to eat don’t eat, once they’ve gotten to the level of eating immediately after surgery they’ll announce it, |

What I'm aware of, is that they tell you not to eat something heavy. Probably for the patient not to have any struggle when defecating. When it's forced, the stitches might loosen |

Brazino:It depends on the nature of the surgery. Any abdominal surgery where the surgeon will have to touch the bowels/intestines will cause the intestines to slow down their movements. This leads to the accumulation of waste, fluids, and toxins, allowing the bowels to get infected and possibly die off. This would necessitate further surgery to remove the infected portion, and can even lead to death. So, we wait till bowel function has fully resumed (evidenced by listening for bowel sounds and farting) to retry feeding. If there's no bowel handling, you can eat normally. Same practice worldwide. |

Nigerians are one of the loudest yet ignorant folks on the face of the earth . Especially those clowns who luckily found themselves in first world countries. Who told the clown every patient can eat immediately after surgery in Canada or anywhere for that matter and that patients cannot eat immediately after surgery here in Nigeria . - There are various factors that determine whether a patient can eat immediately after surgery or not . - E.g A patient cannot eat immediately after surgery anywhere in the world after some major surgeries involving extensive bowel resection . Here in Nigeria too, we feed patients few hours after thyroid surgery or key hole procedures such as removal of the gall bladder . - If you operated on the leg or hand eg fixation of a fracture . Patients eat immediately they recover from Anaesthesia So eating or not eating after surgeries depend on plenty factors. In a bid to run down Nigerian Doctors, the lousy clown has only exposed his own ignorance |

Doctors ask patients not to eat after surgery to protect them. After anesthesia, the body especially the stomach and bowels needs time to "wake up." Eating too soon can cause vomiting, choking, or stress on the surgical area. This isn’t just in Nigeria, it happens worldwide. But in places like Europe, advanced technology and close monitoring sometimes allow doctors to let patients eat earlier, if it's safe. In Nigeria, doctors are often more cautious because of fewer resources. So, it's more about safety than location. |

It all depends with the type and location of surgery, Normally if includes the GI system it might disrupt the normal motility of the system,The Nervous system Brian surgery might temper with the response in the body, Urogenital,Liver and billary system. So one will need to wait for a while, while we should keep in mind that surgery is an invasive procedure(a controlled trauma to correct an anomaly) it might disrupt the physiology of the system in question. So it all depends on the location and the organs or systems involved in the process. The guy is trying to sound smart while he ain't, making it sounds like it's peculiar to Nigerian Dr's alone, medicine is practice the same all over the world only difference is in the amount of facilities mostly diagnostic devices or tools and the way the Medical Agencies in those countries choose or approve the procedures or even the type of medication to be used in their country. We still have the best over here,Our Dr's are heroes ![]() |

for most intra abdominal surgeries, touching bowel may affect gut motility or peristalsis this in turn increases transient time for food and digestion, until bowel movement is fully established its advice's not to eat. na why your doctor go ask if you don mess or shít post surgery, just to know...... |

Brazino:It is because of the nature of our foods. Our foods are mainly solid foods compared to the Western world, where their foods are mainly light foods. Doctors believe eating solid food after surgery might give a patient complications. |

It’s everywhere, not just Nigeria! If you eat too much after a surgical procedure, you can vomit. You can eat, but only light meals |

Here in SA, we're only advised not to eat anything before surgery... I once drank some water few hours before surgery when I was 10 years old and I vomited the water immediately I woke up from the surgery. |

It's for abdominal surgery. To allow the digestive system to recover from the trauma of surgery so as to prevent complications related to the digestive system |
