This quest to escape poverty, hunger, unemployment and insecurity, among other reasons, caused a major segment of Nigeria’s population to seek alternatives for better livelihood prospects for themselves and their families.

Those seeking economic survival see irregular migration as the best alternative, given the difficulty and resources involved in migrating through regular and legitimate routes. In many instances, very few of the original number who set out on these dangerous journeys live to tell their stories. While many regularly drown in the Mediterranean Sea, many also die in the deserts, and others are sold as slaves in a modern slave market.

Most of the victims of this trade are from West Africa. Many of them leave home with expectations of getting to Europe and other destinations perceived to have better economic prospects for them, but they end up in the slave merchant nets in North Africa. The victims are put in camps and sold in open markets in Libya, while the international community watches in silence. The geographical location of Libya renders it a transit route for migrants journeying to Italy and many other parts of Europe.

The issue here is whether it is proper in diplomatic quarters to do such a thing.

I really see no big deal here. Trump saluted a Saudi general, that is the no.1 citizen of the world. That was definitely dishonorable.

It actually takes a lot of confidence for Shettima to do that. Even the Brazilian VP made a head gesture in appreciation.

It’s called courtesy. In 2024, President Putin was seen driving Kim Jong Un, his Korean counterpart in a presidential limo, why didn’t you have any issues with that? Why should a President be driving himself, let alone another president of a foreign country?

Both acts by Shetima and Trump are not wrong, it simply implies Courtesy without any loss of dignity... It's only those that perceives themselves lower that will not agree to do that for their insecurities... Those are acts of a gentleman... If you shake hands with someone it implies that you are of the same class... While if you believe someone is above you in class or age you are not supposed to First give him hand for a shake... That doesn't mean that if he first gives you hand for a handshake you are of the same class. What about a man opening a car door for his girlfriend or wife? According to you is because he is lower in status but is it true? No it's not... A man is most times higher in class and age to his wife or girlfriend... So when the man opens the door to his mother or father is he above them? The Brazilian VP is a guest to Nigeria so treating your guest with dignity only shows your humility.
For Trump when ever he's boarding an aircraft or a chopper you will see someone saluting him and he'll salute back what does that imply? Humility coz if he likes he will not even look at them and they must salute him. Any military man in the world as far as he's in Uniform even if he's a field Marshal his way of greeting a President as important as US President it must be a salute, However Trump decides to return the greeting is up to him, if he likes he can decide not to even look at them, but them saluting him is a must.

Opening the door for his Brazilian counterpart, Geraldo Alckmin, has sparked a conversation online.

Geraldo was in Nigeria recently and had a meeting with Shettima. After the meeting, Shettima saw him off to his car and went ahead to open the door for him to enter.

Shettima’s action has sparked off a debate online. Some Nigerians argue that his action was out of courtesy and portrayed him as a humble man. Others however argue that it is inappropriate for a Vice President to open the car door for another Vice President.
