The Education Rights Campaign, ERC, has berated the governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, over his decision to hike the fees of students in the state’s higher institution – Anambra State University, ANSU.

The state government had increased the tuition fees of the students from N36,000 to N86,000, for non-medical students, and N120,000 for medical students.

The group, in a statement issued yesterday, said students still found it difficult to pay the old fees, adding that the new fees were likely to force majority of the students out of school.

ERC said there was no justification for the increment in school fees as parents earned very poor wages, while many were losing their jobs daily, in addition to the high cost of living and rising inflabe able to afford the new fees

He said: ”What we should be working towards across the federation is to expand and upgrade the current state of facilities in schools and also build new schools with basic facilities and well trained teachers to guarantee meaningful learning.”

Nwachukwu noted further that the increment in the school fees had shown that the ruling class lacked the ability to move the economy forward.

Daniel Bwala has criticized Peter Obi’s record as governor, alleging that his decisions negatively affected education in Anambra State. Bwala made these remarks during an interview where he addressed Obi’s recent comments against the federal government.

He said, “When he was a governor in Anambra, it was during his time that he increased the school fees of non-medical students from 35,000 to 75,000 and for medical up to 125,000 that led to some people pulling out of school and some people unable to finish."

Bwala also accused Obi of failing to handle strikes and labour unrest in the state. “There were strike during his time as governor. In fact, when the university went on strike, he sacked the vice chancellor,” he said.

He continued by alleging that Obi gave preferential treatment to mission schools instead of government-owned institutions. “It is during his time as governor that the hospitals in Anambra had to go on strike because he could not provide a good living condition for the medical people and he started persecuting the people, preferring mission schools over government schools,” Bwala stated.


The presidential aide further described Obi's opposition rhetoric as empty and lacking empathy. He claimed Obi’s only strength lies in issuing press statements. According to him, “Their greatest strength in opposition is issuance of press statements but without a definite plan of what they will do.”

Bwala insisted that members of the opposition, including Obi, have not shown compassion for Nigerians. “Empathy is personal and it can be public,” he said, questioning why Obi would wait until becoming president before showing concern.

He concluded that Obi's style of politics is based on “falsehood, disinformation and misinformation,” saying, “Since 2023 when people checked, he has been saying ‘go and verify.’”

These are facts that no amount of lies and propaganda from Obidients can cover. They say he developed Education in Anambra and made them come tops, which in itself a very big lies. Obi handed public secondary schools back to the missions who took back their schools and were responsible for the upgrade of their respective schools but when they do well, Gbajue followers will give Obi the credit while they relegate the missions. The public tertiary institutions that were under him, they were going on strikes over poor amenities and increase in school fees.. Someone that couldn't develop tertiary institutions under him but boasting of developing secondary schools/basic Education that are under the mission or private churches. Very laughable
