Atiku Rejects Southern Call To Step Down, Demands Open Primary by Putindbutt(op): 7:39pm On Jul 09, 2025
Atiku Abubakar, former vice president has strongly rejected mounting calls from political leaders and stakeholders in Southern Nigeria urging him to step aside in favour of a Southern presidential candidate.

The demand, which has gained traction among members of the coalition, is anchored on the principle of equity, justice, and rotation of power, with many arguing that the South deserves to complete its turn at the presidency.

In a statement released after a closed-door meeting with leaders of ADC, the former vice president declared that he would not bow to pressure, and called on the coalition to uphold democracy by allowing open and transparent primaries.

“I will not be pressured into abandoning my constitutional right to aspire. Let every qualified member test their popularity through a credible primary. Zoning must not be used to silence competence,” Atiku stated emphatically.

However, this declaration appears to have rattled the fragile coalition, triggering a fierce backlash from members of the Obidient Movement, who insist that Peter Obi remains the only acceptable candidate.

Across social media platforms, Obidients have declared that it’s either Obi or we pull out.

Obidient are threatening to pull out of the coalition if Atiku insists on contesting.

What began as a strategic alliance against the ruling party now faces serious cracks, with party insiders warning that the coalition may collapse before it even begins.

While Atiku’s camp argues for merit-based contest, Obidients accuse him of attempting to hijack the structure and sabotage the collective dream.

Political watchers say the coalition is on the brink, as both sides refuse to shift ground. If not quickly addressed, this friction may derail efforts to build a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Yes we want primaries by registered members of the ADC not some money-bag delegates. Obidients get ready to register and support PO

For those quoting me out of ignorance because the simplest concepts have to be explained to them, in the US where we learnt democracy from, registered party members elect delegates, and aspiring delegates are required by party guidelines to openly declare their support for their preferred candidate, so that party members know who to elect as delegate for their state. I wrote about it here: https://www.nairaland.com/8464017/what-like-how-us-chooses

There's nothing stopping ADC from adopting a similar structure to strengthen democracy within the party.

ADC presidential candidate in the last election, Dumebi Kachikwu has thrown an open challenge to the coalition to come out and tell Nigerians they are not planning to make Atiku the presidential candidate. If they do, he will support the coalition and withdraw his litigation. Since last week, they have not been able to come out to respond to him 🤣😂🤣

How many delegates do you have per state in ADC ?. You think it's by social media registration 😂
Re: Atiku Rejects Southern Call To Step Down, Demands Open Primary by NgeneUkwenu(f): 7:46pm On Jul 09, 2025
Only President Tinubu enjoys support across North and South regions.

Give Atiku the ticket. Tinubu wins South West, South South, North Central and gets significant votes in North East, North West and South East zones.

Give Peter Obi the ticket...Tinubu loses South East, share votes in South South and North Central, wins North West, South West, and North East.

No formula will defeat Tinubu in 2027.

If Atiku insists on contesting, it's his constitutional right. However, he should know that he cannot win the election without a strong candidate form the South. That's why he needs to work with Peter Obi.

Atiku is more likely to spend just one tenure in office because he will be 80 years by 2027 and canvas the north to vote for a Southern candidate after his tenure.

Elections are in 2027, this is 2025. Primaries can be done later next year, the momentum will bring more popularity to ADC.

The same Atiku who refused to step down or support Jonathan in 2015? he kept on screaming it's the turn of the north.

He left the PDP for the APC after losing the ticket. He eventually lost the primary election to Buhari but he supported Buhari.

Look at the way an obidient is reasoning grin

I see obi and Atiku contesting and canceling out each other. They will both pave the way for Tinubu

I saw one Obidient wrote somewhere that Atiku should take a vice position to Obi. Comment left me wondering what those people smoke in they camp.

That’s the best way to go. Let’s be transparent. With so doing I will be suggesting Atiku to take over power then hand over to Obi. APC needs rascal like Atiku to wrestle power from them.

This is exactly the type of traits that show that Atiku will never be a Nigerian president.

Dude doesn't understand timing in politics.

I'm pretty sure no southerner will clamour for any presidential ticket in 2030 out of respect. But, obviously not Atiku. He wants to be president by fire by force.
Re: Atiku Rejects Southern Call To Step Down, Demands Open Primary by onadana: 8:22pm On Jul 09, 2025
Atiku will never be president of Nigeria, let Tinubu continue. Atiku is self centered.
Re: Atiku Rejects Southern Call To Step Down, Demands Open Primary by ogascomax: 8:22pm On Jul 09, 2025
Everybody should contest whoever wins the rest should support him. I will say it again if Obi contest by himself Na only mad man go say Obi will win the election. If he can't win the primary or do deputy make him rest and support others. After all he has said that he is not desperate to be president. But I don't believe that he is not desperate and I will stop believing in him if he did contest if coalition doesn't favour him.
