Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, met on Wednesday in Abuja with Richard Mills, the United States ambassador to Nigeria.

The meeting was attended by Kemi Nanna Nandap, comptroller-general (CG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and Magdalene Ajani, the permanent secretary in the ministry of interior.

In a statement, Tunji-Ojo said the recently introduced visa procedures by the US government for Nigerian nationals were discussed during the “constructive meeting”.

The interior minister said the US ambassador provided “valuable insights into the revised protocol and its alignment with established practices to uphold the integrity of the visa process

The ambassador described the new e-visa policy of the Nigeria Immigration Service as an innovation intended to streamline and enhance the application process for foreign travellers into the country,” the statement reads.

“The Ministry of Interior, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and the US Mission in Nigeria agreed to strengthen collaboration, emphasizing adherence to visa regulations and promoting responsible travel practices among Nigerian citizens.

Our government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu (GCFR) will continue to ensure strict compliance across the board in key areas, including secure travel documents, ensuring the issuance of secure travel documents with verified traveller identities

Visa overstay management: Implementing measures to limit overstays by travellers on US visas.

“Information sharing: Sharing relevant security and/or criminal record information to protect public safety.”

On Tuesday, the US embassy in Nigeria announced a major change to its visa policy for Nigeria, reducing the validity period and entry allowance for most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens.

The embassy said most of the affected visas will now be limited to single entry with a three-month validity period

Trump should not bobo us, democrats will reverse most of Trump Policies.

The best time to apply for U.S visa will be after Trump leaves office.

Where's the tit for tat?

Suddenly, Nigeria now has value but it's conspicuously missing among the African countries Trump invited to the White House for the investment parley.

A smart and thoughtful move by the Hon. Minister. Talking with the US about visa issues helps build stronger ties and shows that Nigeria is ready to follow global best practices while keeping our country safe and respected.

African countries Trump summoned which are majorly French speaking countries. You guys don't even follow the event you want to be arguing about

In short, you are having issue with Nigeria having more value. Just say it

Fixing this issue of reciprocity means less income for Nigeria.

Did the meeting compel the US to take it back to where it was? The meeting was/is not necessary if you ask me. Also, the FG cannot stop overstay from happening because it is an individual problem and not the problem of the country.
Whomever has applied for a Visa or any government recognised document(s) should have a reference number which he/she can use to claim that the process is ongoing.
Shikenan.

Obidients, stop hating, stop crying about anyone wishing the best for Nigeria. Is Nigeria not gaining more value under this government?

We are not interested in convincing you people about what this government has been doing, allow us to tell those who are interested to hear and read about it without being an opinion killer

With a former drug baron as the president of the country, I ironically totally agree with you.

BTW, Mr. Ojo should go beyond being the Minister of Nigerian Passports to tackle other ills in his ministry. Nigerian prisons need urgent reforms.

You clearly didn’t even bother to check the facts before typing all that. Liberia, one of the countries Trump invited for investment parley, is not a French-speaking country. it’s English-speaking, it’s not 'majorly French-speaking countries' as you claim.

Secondly, if Nigeria truly had 'more value,' as you put it, maybe supporters like you would raise the standard of discourse instead of relying on weak deflections and false superiority. This isn’t about envy it’s about calling out misinformation and holding leaders accountable, something every country, including Nigeria, desperately needs more of.

How many countries was invited, how many are French speaking amongnst? What then is your definition of majority?

This kind of high-level diplomatic engagement is a step in the right direction. Strengthening collaboration on visa integrity, secure documentation, and overstay management reflects Nigeria's growing commitment to global standards. Kudos to Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and the US Mission for fostering mutual respect and responsibility in international mobility.
