In the past when Landlords are renting out their houses, they don't care about your privacy as far as you will pay their money at when due but these days Landlords are so annoying and they start asking what you do for a living etc... Well, I can excuse that due to the fact that they don't want to give out their house to a criminal. But they go as far as give agents the following conditions to rent out their house;

1. I only need a male tenant, single and working class

2. I only need a female tenant, single & working class

3. I only need a newly married couple without kids

4. I only need a single male or female but the type that go out in the morning and come back in the evening.

5. I only need a married couple with children

6. I only need a corper. Haba, for goodness sake.

7. Some Landlords will tell you they don't care who wants to rent the house but he would lock his gate latest by 9. I've encountered that before and it wasn't funny throughout my stay in the house for 2 years.

8. Some Landlords will tell you they don't like you bringing in friends anyhow whether male or female.

9. Other landlords will say they don't want womanizers that would bring black girl in the morning, fair girl in the afternoon, fat girl in the evening. Etc.

10. Lastly, some Landlord would say they need 2years rent at once. They don't collect one year rent.

11. There was a house I stayed, the landlady told me that she collects one year light bill together with your yearly rent because she doesn't want to knock your door every month asking for your light bill. It was estimated billing then and she pays same amount every month because she has no dept of even one naira on her bill. Though it helped me somehow Sha.

Please guys share your experiences.
this is what you get when your landlord lives in the same house with you.

I am one of those who specify who and what they want, and I don't believe anything is wrong in that. My single room is strictly for coopers, while the flats are for a working-class single or married person and must have a car. (This is just to be at a safer place to be sure they're not yahoo or can pay the subsequent rents. We have a rule in our estate that nothing comes in or goes out past 11pm, and this has solved a lot of unfortunate scenarios in our estate. There's a fine and sanction for anyone who goes against the law.

I once lived in a house in Osheri where the landlord demands a bottle of Baylis from every new occupant

The man used to chase out every tenant after a year for new entrant.. That's his culture.. He doesn't want you to stay more than a year, and once you move in, he starts looking for your trouble, so as to frustrate you to the point of leaving when your rent is due. He had over 30 tenants

When baba opened his bar in front of his house, baba brought out all the Baylis he has been collecting from tenants to stock his freezer.. Omo! the Baylis plenty gan.. In fact, go pass 50 cheesy

I have friend whose Landlord told him to stop cooking with Chicken.

He had to relocate to another place

Some of these landlords are very wicked. My own was living upstairs on top me and pounding everyday day from 9pm to 1am and wake up 4am to 6am to continue pounding. He doesn't own a restaurant or anything. And his children will never pound until that particular time comes.

I begged and begged and this stupid man refused to stop. Worst, he continued pounding even when my wife gave birth and we brought our baby home.

I almost punched him but me sef show am shege before i packed out of his house.

Honestly I still don't get you. Will everybody be rich no. Will everybody be poor no. Will everybody be a landlord no. I only reply you that not everyone will be a landlord in this life and that's all. Nothing concerns me with what the op said cus just as you said it's their property and have the right to give you condition.

Yeah that's how I rented a house from this guy. Agent didn't tell me he lived on the premises till after I had paid. When I got introduced to the guy that night I moved in I knew I was in deep trouble. He had effeminate ways and looked like a drug addict. He didn't look like the type to own a house. Come to find out later that his dad is very rich and that house is his own inheritance from the dad. House cost about 400 million naira. Anyway so this guy is on all kinds of drugs and will be screaming all night till morning as if demons are chasing him. He will be using his car door to scratch my car after he smokes his drugs. I mean he didn't give any rules but it just looked like I am in a dangerous situation here. Thank God I came out of that situation. When I moved into that guys house my car was real nice looking. After I left that guys house my car looked like it had been in a war zone. This fool be speeding into a tiny space after using drugs. Werey

No. 1 is for Landlord that feels a single working class guy will be able to pay their rent because of little responsibilities

For number 3, some landlord don't hike their fee especially if there is no agent. They have fulfillment in helping young couples start life. Makes them happy especially they old type of landlord, some will even be understanding if you are little short on payment

Number 6 is for landlord that are always suspicious, so incase the tenant is a bad egg. They only have 1 year to put up with him or her + they will tell the corper before hand that he or she can't stay pass a year, they might even say, they want to use the house after a year.

For number 10, you can't blame them, they need money and the situation of this country is tough. A landlord that earns like 70k in this economy and has kids in Tertiary institution, will surely ask for 2 yrs rent upfront, even if you can pay more, won't mind.

1. I only need a male tenant, single and working class ....... Who wants his House to be used for short-Time by all these Girls marketing their trade on Facebook and Instagram

2. I only need a female tenant, single & working class - ... ...Never heard of a Landlord asking for this, not even Mama Landlady in Benin. Except the Landlord is Male and Single. grin

3. I only need a newly married couple without kids - ......which Landlord will want to rent out Two Bedroom and the Tenant comes with ten Children/ Soak-away go quick dey full. Noise, Fighting everywhere grin

4. I only need a single male or female but the type that go out in the morning and come back in the evening. ...... Yes o! Before they start doing Yahoo-Yahoo in yoru House. Govt will seize such Houses, when they are discovered.

5. I only need a married couple with children...... Married People are more responsible than all these "sagging trouser", sleep-all-day Yahoo Boys. But we use to "rent wife" to meet prospective landlord, until they got smart and wanted to see Proof of Marriage. Awon Landlord yii ti crase o

6. I only need a corper. Haba, for goodness sake. ....If it is a student accommodation, Corpers are needed

7. Some Landlords will tell you they don't care who wants to rent the house but he would lock his gate latest by 9. I've encountered that before and it wasn't funny throughout my stay in the house for 2 years. ............ What are you doing outside by 1am in the Night? Ritualist or shey Armed Robber ni yin nii sir? grin grin

8. Some Landlords will tell you they don't like you bringing in friends anyhow whether male or female. ....Just dont turn his House to a Brothel, a few friends at the right time of the day, is always allowed, before una go spoil the hinge of his gate, from excessive openning and closing.

9. Other landlords will say they don't want womanizers that would bring black girl in the morning, fair girl in the afternoon, fat girl in the evening. Etc. ........... Rent a Hotel, if you will spend all your day and night, knacking Girls. Such atmosphere is not good to raise Children because they learn from what they see.

10. Lastly, some Landlord would say they need 2years rent at once. They don't collect one year rent.............. This one is Unlawful, the law does not allow the landlord to collect more than One year Rent. But it actually favors you to pay two years at once, if you have the money. That is guaranteed, No rent Increase, sure Accommodation for you, for the next two Years! Security of Tenor. What if you pay One year and the Landlord increase the Rent, the next Year or needs his House and refuses to renew, wetin you go do?

11. There was a house I stayed, the landlady told me that she collects one year light bill together with your yearly rent because she doesn't want to knock your door every month asking for your light bill. It was estimated billing then and she pays same amount every month because she has no dept of even one naira on her bill. 2016, I wanted to rent a flat in Durumi and the agent/lawyer managing the property said the landlord did not want Igbos. I was desperate for the flat and so I told him I was Ghanaian and told him my last name was Mensah.

Lived there for 4 years with the landlord in the same compound and proved him wrong. His grouse was with an igbo tenant upstairs who overstayed while waiting for his house to be completed and so he didnt want any other. At the end of my tenancy, I told him I wasnt Ghanaian and that I hope he would have a different opinion about us.

Finally someone has called out this nonsense
Some lunatics among them actually are quite specific about tribe
The only reason any dispute should occur between a landlord and a tenant should be default in rent payment or damages
Nothing more

My pops rented out his house to students,

nobody can sleep there because of cult related activities,,

so yes, Landlord reserves the right to rent out his property to whomever they like

afterall not everyone can borrow my car, why not my house

you will only be angry if you have never leased or rented out a property before

When you build your own house, you will let it out without asking questions. At the end na you go complain when the tenants begin to misbehave. Misbehave here I mean like keeping very late nights everyday and even bringing criminals to the compound or turning it into short let and short time. grin
Landlords puts conditions that suits their situation and past experience.
That's why it's better not to live in a compound where landlord stays because there will be conflict most times.
