🚨 Police Can’t Search You Just Because They Feel Like It — Know Your Rights! It happens every day: You’re walking down the road, and suddenly, a police van pulls up, "Officer" says “Open your bag!” 🚫 That’s illegal. If it happens to you: ✅ Stay calm ✅ Ask clearly: “Am I under arrest?” ✅ Demand to know the reason for the search ✅ Record or note their name, rank, and station 🛑 If you haven’t committed a crime and are not under arrest— they have NO RIGHT to search you without a warrant. 👮🏽♂️ “You look suspicious” is NOT a legal reason to search your bag, pockets or phone. ❌️ You're not a criminal just because you have a phone or laptop. 👉 You have the right to say: "Officer, am I under arrest? If not, I’d like to go." 📌 Under Nigerian law, random “stop and search” without suspicion is abuse of power — and you can take legal action. --- ⚖️ Have the police ever searched you for no reason? Drop your experience below. 📩 Got questions? Drop them below.

There is the letter of the law, and then there's the situation where the people who enforce the law also break the law with no consequence so as to exploit you. Don't drag with them sha. No claim rights. Respectfully comply and they would actually let you off easy. |

Stephen0mozzy:Stop sounding like a kid. Nobody is talking about hard man, he told you what to do...ask the police man, am I under arrest? It's either you are under arrest or are free to leave, police can't arrest you without any probable cause. Don't be so scared of police and police station. Police is a government worker, police is not the law or a judge, simple communication can not make a police man shoot you. You people say you want change change, and you are so scared and weak, lol. |

You can claim your right without being rude, nobody tolerate rudeness. What op is saying is simple, let's take a scenario. If I am accosted by 2 police officer and demanded for my phone, I will just ask them why they need my phone. If they say it's for stop and search ask calmly if you are under arrest, which if they are smart they will try and shy away from the question because they knew it's implicating for them to answer yes if they have no ground of suspicion to detain you. Even if they say yes, you are under arrest ask further on what charges is the arrest, they will use police strategy of shying away from responding. Even if they collect your phone was collected by force just keep telling them you never consent to your phone being searched. The implications of reminding of that is any evidence gotten from searching your phone without your consent is useless and could be used against them in court. So you can claim your right without being rude, you can out think them not out fight them. At least Be humble in front of gun |

Please o, never fight or talk to a policeman rudely. Soft answers always do turn away wrath. |

ideatoprince18:This is exactly what I am talking about, someone always lead the team and he is mostly experience and educated. Your approach of communication with them goes a long way, don't be too friendly and don't give them condescending attitude. |

All these suggestions will be more effective if the office of the Attorney General of the states in Nigeria starts being responsible. I was in Deli India some years ago and I had an issue with the police and my friend an Indian reported the issue to the office of the Attorney General and come and see how the police officer was shaking. The office of the attorney general ( the Chief law officer of the state) has refused to be responsible to the citizens and the police officers are cashing in to exploit the citizens. |

We will get there. For now, let's just keep enforcing our rights.. Smartcitizen: |
