Mynd44:
Diamond bank was sold/merged not shut down. But difference
Then Oceanic Bank should not be part of the list. Because it was merged with EcoBank as well. Same way Access merged with Diamond.

You are missing one big one, INTERCONTINENTAL BANK Plc. Happy bank, Happy customers.
EKOMADENG:
You didn't mention intercontinental bank. This one is painful.
Access Bank acquired Intercontinental. It was never shut down.

alizma:
If that is the case, the oceanic bank, PHB and spring bank should not be on the list because they fade away through acquisition, just like intercontinental bank.
PHB acquired spring bank in 2008, then key stone bank acquired PHB in 2011, that same 2011, Eco bank acquired Oceanic bank while in 2012 access bank acquired intercontinental bank.
The article is quite misleading.

Did Oceanic Bank shut down too or it got acquired by Ecobank?

If you can answer that question correctly, then you will understand that Oceanic Bank should not be on this list.

Oceanic too was sold marge, so what are you saying
💯, I have replied him too. Oceanic Bank was sold and merged with EcoBank.

The case of Access is the case of Oceanic Bank.

Article is misleading.

Oceanic bank, the biggest bank in Nigeria then, was destroyed by a woman.
Explain what you mean by: A woman destroyed Oceanic Bank.

There’s a particular bank that Saraki & Sanusi ran down based on your selfish interest::

I’m sure y’all know the name of the bank..
Let me help your memory - Societe Generale Bank.

Bank in the days. Remember Okocha's funds was stuck there.

Wallade:
Explain what you mean by: A woman destroyed Oceanic Bank.
The woman Cecilia Ibru the then CEO of the bank was hailed as one of the most power figure in the financial sector. When she was later convicted of fraud, her fame also ended up affecting the bank negatively, and the bank never recovered from it.

Same with many banks on the list, they merge during the Sanusi recapitalization.

Ii was privileged to have started my banking career here as a fresh graduate.
Good ol’ days.
Re: 7 Nigerian Banks That Shut Down Over The Years by DIVINEEVIDENCE: 12:40pm On Jul 11, 2025
Intercontinental Bank and Bank PHB were my favourites then.

Like, how can you not love Bank PHB?
Their marketing strategy, branding/advertising and customer policy was something else entirely.

I haven't stopped wondering why Ecobank absorbed Oceanic rather than the other way around.
Oceanic had better branding and customer appeal.

Btw, Sanusi should be given his flowers.

Man really brought order to the banking sector that year, even though all the gains of those years have currently been eroded.

Standard Trust Bank was students favorite bank back in those days. I remember the massive queue back in those days at Owerri during my university days just to withdraw money. They merged with UBA and maintained their logo

Na the bank later woke up as Heritage bank but being unlucky, the powers that held it fell out of political main stream and as a result, it collapse again in 2014.
