One day, I was on a drive with a friend and the police stopped our car at a checkpoint for their routine checks. I got angry when the man was spending time checking the bonnet hoping to find a fault after checking the trunk and papers. Out of anger, I shouted at the officer. Reacting, he said he wouldn't let our car go after wasting our time for nearly one hour.

Moments later, he calmed down and we started having a conversation about how to have a better police in Nigeria. I was shocked when the officer rebuffed my suggestion that policemen deserve a good salary. The man said they would start feeling too big to stand in the sun and check vehicles if they start earning good salaries. Apparently, he's indirectly saying is that they come to the checkpoint to collect bribes from motorists and that if you start paying them well, they'd stop coming.

Huge salary, equipment without right staff is like putting water in a leaking basin.

They set up many checkpoints but can't counter kidnapping and armed robbery effectively. Why? Because those checkpoints are for extortion, not to fight insecurity.

Even in the 2000s the roads were not secured, the main issue right now is that, insecurity has gotten worst.

This is exactly what is holding us back in this country honestly. Seeing black and calling it white just because we belong to one particular party or from a particular tribe and it shouldn't be so if we want this country to get better in every aspect.
