JAMB Accuses 2025 UTME Top Scorer Chinedu Okeke Of Identity Manipulation, Altering Records To Gain Multiple Admissions.

JAMB questioned why a student in his penultimate year of medical studies would suddenly attempt to switch identity and course to Mechanical Engineering in 2025, suggesting manipulation of personal records.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has responded to a wave of social media narratives surrounding the case of Chinedu Okeke, a 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidate, stressing its unwavering commitment to factual data and institutional accountability.

In a statement issued by JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, the Board described recent commentaries defending Okeke as part of a disturbing trend where individuals elevate personal interests above due process, seeking to shield questionable actions rather than uphold truth.

Clarifying the facts, JAMB stated that Okeke is not from Anambra State as widely claimed, but from Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area in Lagos State.

He used this Lagos-based identity in 2021 when he took the UTME and subsequently gained admission to study Medicine and Surgery at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he is currently a 400-level student.

The Board explained that all candidate identities are authenticated using the National Identification Number (NIN), and it does not alter any candidate-provided data.

The claim that JAMB retrieved wrong data from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in 2021 was categorically dismissed as false. Instead, the examination body said that evidence indicates that Okeke altered his previously submitted records before registering for the 2025 examination—an action acknowledged even by his own supporters.

JAMB expressed concern that, rather than seeking the facts from relevant institutions, social media campaigners chose to exploit emotional angles, including reaching out to the candidate’s family. As of now, the university where Okeke is enrolled has not issued any contrary statement.

Pending further verification, particularly from the university, JAMB said it would continue to treat Okeke as a legitimate student but would notify the Medical and Dental Council for possible action should the irregularities be confirmed.

The Board also accused Okeke of taking advantage of Lagos State’s admission quota in 2021 and attempting to claim Anambra State status in 2025 to benefit from a separate quota, effectively depriving rightful candidates in both states.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and rule-based operations, JAMB stated that it would not be deterred by public noise or sentimental advocacy.

The statement read, "Firstly, it is inaccurate to assert that Chinedu Okeke hails from Anambra State. All available records indicate that he is from Amuwo-Odofin Local Government in Lagos State, where he sat for the 2021 UTME as he then claimed in his details filled with NIMC. Based on this, he gained admission to study Medicine and Surgery at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and is currently in his fourth year.

"A review of his student records from the university has not yet contradicted this information and this as it were raises significant questions as to why a 400-level medical student would suddenly pivot to studying Mechanical Engineering in 2025 while still enrolled in his original programme, especially given the inconsistencies in his personal claims which should form his identity."

Benjamin said, "What kind of institution would JAMB be if it did not maintain accurate records to verify candidates’ claims? Which in instances of doubt, we must seek adequate explanations.

"At JAMB, a candidate’s identity is established through their National Identification Number (NIN). We do not modify or add to the information provided by candidates; hence, there should be no disputes regarding their identities.

"The assertion that JAMB retrieved incorrect details for Chinedu from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in 2021 is unequivocally false, aimed at fabricating a defence for his case.

"The evidence suggests that Chinedu altered his records as filled in 2021 prior to registering for the 2025 UTME, a fact confirmed by even his own advocates.

"To prevent the propagation of such baseless claims, the Board has partnered with NIMC to ensure the integrity of candidates’ data."

Allegation Of Unfair Treatment

An education technology expert and Chief Executive Officer of Educare, Alex Onyia, previously accused JAMB of unfairly targeting Okeke, the top scorer in the 2025 UTME, who scored 375 marks.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, had raised concerns about Okeke’s result during the board’s 2025 policy meeting in Abuja, stating that the board “suspected foul play.”

Okeke, from Anambra State, had applied to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos.

However, the board claimed it discovered that he was previously admitted to study Medicine at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), raising questions about his current status.

Onyia countered these allegations, explaining that Okeke was one of several candidates affected by a widely reported system glitch during the 2025 UTME.

He said Okeke was forced to reprint his examination slip and take a repeat exam, where he eventually scored 375, the highest mark recorded this year.

The education expert traced the discrepancies in Okeke’s records to a 2021 data migration error involving the National Identification Number (NIN) platform.

According to him, the issues were corrected that same year through JAMB’s official data correction process, and Okeke’s profile currently reflects the accurate details.

“Chinedu filled all the required documents appropriately, and his updated details were transmitted to JAMB. The inconsistencies were not his doing,” Onyia stated.

He called on JAMB to conduct a thorough investigation and issue a public apology to Okeke, noting that the public questioning of his integrity was unjust and damaging.

Nigerians bring tribal sentiments and emotions to everything rather than focusing on the facts, which cannot lie. That is the major factor against our development as a nation, not corruption.

How can you justify a 400-level medical student taking a school-leaving University Entrance examination like JAMB?

It can be understood if he did this in his first year. But when you are in your fourth year of a medical course, you are obviously at an advanced stage of your education and cannot compete fairly with school leavers in a JAMB subject like Biology. You will definitely have an unfair advantage.

Obviously, this young adult in his mid-twenties will be competing unfairly with teenage school leavers who are mostly under sixteen.

That is why even in sports such as football, basketball, boxing, and athletics, there are age restrictions, because the brain and body of a teenager are not as developed as that of a fully grown young adult.

In Nigeria and other countries, matriculating twice is against the rules. Once you have matriculated at a degree level, you are not typically permitted to repeat that process.

If you already have a degree and want another undergraduate degree, you typically get admitted through a process known as 'Direct Entry'.

The UTME examinations are designed to offer university admissions to school leavers, not university undergraduates. That is why it is called a Matriculation examination. Please research the meaning of the word matriculation. It means to be FRESHLY enrolled into a university.

An undergraduate cannot matriculate. That is an abuse of the system. That is why the term matriculation is not used for anyone who is not a fresher.

Would you want a person who is already an advanced boxer to fight your own child as an amateur boxer? That is an unfair advantage!

But rather than focusing on only the facts, Nigerians are incorporating ethnic sentiments into the discussion.

Oh, it is because he is Igbo. He is being targeted since he is a Christian, and the JAMB Registrar is a Muslim.

Is that not what Peter Obi and Oby Ezekwesili did with Mmesomma Ejikeme?

The two of them almost caused ethnic tensions in Nigeria until it was established that Mmesomma Ejikeme lied about her age and actually cheated on the JAMB examination.

If Chinedu Okeke, a 400-level medical student, wanted to change courses, there were legal routes available to him, including a change of course and a university transfer.

If these options are not to his liking, then he can explore the route of going to a private university. Public universities are subject to these rules because of limited spaces.

Those are the standard procedures in Nigeria and abroad.

In Nigeria, like many other countries, because of our history and peculiar situation, each state has quotas for entrance into publicly funded institutions like the army, police, universities, civil service and the diplomatic corps.

In this situation, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board accuses Chinedu Okeke of gaming the system by claiming Lagos State origin in 2021, for which he got admission into the university, and then claiming Anambra State in 2025.

This is obviously wrong, if it is true, and the JAMB asserts that it is true, and their allegations have not been denied by the candidate or his advocates.

By claiming Lagos in 2021, when he is actually from Anambra, or by claiming Anambra in 2025, when he is actually from Lagos, Mr. Chinedu Okeke is denying someone else who is genuinely from these states their quota.

I fully support JAMB in their investigations of this candidate and call on them to stay the course and investigate this matter to the end, just like in the Mmesomma case, where they were falsely accused of targeting Mmesomma Ejikeme because she is an Igbo Christian and the JAMB Registrar is a Lukumi Yoruba Muslim and then vindicated.

No matter how far falsehood has travelled, it must eventually be overtaken by truth.

This is the fraudster some people were celebrating few days ago. A 400level Medicine student who sat for UTME and then competing for first position with secondary school students.

The identity fraud below was what vexed me most.

Okeke denied, someone like "Bisola Omogbemimora Obinbinunolaomolodoidelainidi" in Lagos that should have been given admission in Lagos, and also went to deny someone else like "Ndubuisi Charles Chukwuebuka" in Anambra from getting admission. JAMB has been infiltrated by people acting based on purely tribal motives. Many people we all know were in the University studying a course they didn’t like or in a school they didn’t like, and kept writing JAMB.

But for some reason JAMB is bothered about this

So, this ancestor was celebrating beating 14 year old secondary school leavers in JAMB.
That said, the guy might indeed wish to switch course for reasons best known to him .

While in 5th year of med school, a very bright colleague of mine attempted suicide and spent days in the ICU before discharge .
Interestingly, he had not failed any MB prior to this time and we were few months away from taking the penultimate MB.
So the attempted suicide wasn’t because he had acutely failed any exam .

He eventually dropped out after that event and went to another university to study engineering.
It was after that crazy event we heard he was pressured into studying medicine by his parents and that he actually wanted Engineering.

Many who have been to med school would agree with me that it isn’t a place for the weak. Kids who aren’t inherently mentally fortified ( not academically) can easily be swallowed by the system .
There are so many medical students who developed mental illness during their course of education. Some struggled to finish and some dropped out .

The Jamb’s statement is one sided . We need to hear from the guy. Only he can say why he was willing to leave everything behind after 4 grueling years to start elsewhere all over again .

Per the legality of his actions, I don’t have much to say about that .
My input is to let the world know that it is indeed possible for a 400 level medical student to ditch medical school and start another course from scratch .
I’ve seen such before !

PS: Parents should stop coarcing their children into living their own failed dreams . If you indeed love medicine , there’s no age barrier . Go to medical school yourself and stop making your kids go through unnecessary stress

This matter is still unfolding. I don't want it to be like Nmesoma where I supported her at first but it later turned out that she falsified her score.

If not because of inefficiency, why will JAMB not extract his state of origin from the nin and make it non editable?
And how exactly is state of origin supposed to affect JAMB and the boy's performance

A lot has happened this year from exam glitches to that south-west graduate that they refuse to clear for graduation till the university and Alex Onyia intervened, which has left JAMB's competency in doubt. The real suspicion is the change in state of origin and not the medicine to engineering bullshit they are trying to create. If they had stuck to the concentrating on the primary suspicion, the conversation would have gone differently.
