Kehinde, a 29-year-old Nigerian man, had been living in Russia for four years before his arrest on drug-related charges under Article 228 of the Russian Criminal Code.

In a bid to reduce his sentence, he joined the Russian military, hoping for a "quick liberation" from prison. He was serving a five-month stint with Russian forces before being captured by Ukrainian-aligned fighters from the Freedom of Russia Legion in the Zaporizhzhia region.
