What a trophy spree! The Abacha era really seems to be the golden era of Nigerian football especially the Japan 93, Tunisia 94 and Atlanta 1996 football wins.

Yes it was. We had our best football performances and achievements during Abacha’s era. I could remember Clemens Westerhoff saying he had unrestricted access to General Sani Abacha during his time coaching the national team.

The best time in our footballing life as a nation was during this Era.

Our super eagles missed out on winning back to back African nations cup trophies in 1996 and 1998 due to international politicking, but still we maintained a very high standard that till date we are yet to beat or even match. I must say this was the glorious era of Nigerian sports.

P.S: we won our very first gold in athletics at the 1996 Olympics won by Chioma Ajunwa.

For all his criticism, the man made things happen. This post reminds me of a discussion I had with a friend the other day about Nigerian leaders in the past. I said the difference between the military leaders and the democratic leaders is that, the military leaders eventually got corrupted by the position of power, but their ascension to power was as a result of their grievances with the injustice in the country, however the democratic leaders we have had were already corrupted before seeking the position of power to accumulate even more power, so basically they have always been worse than the military leaders (just look into the likes of Abiola, Obasanjo and Tinubu) Looking at Nigeria now it is clear to see that that is indeed the case.

Abacha was a great man. Most of the stories cooked by d West and some politicians are to dent his image so that a leader like him will not emerge in future. (A leader that gave them no access to manipulate Nigeria economy).

More of the benefits of the investment in youth sports from the 1960s onward.

It doesn't mean we were good at sports..those victories still covered up a lot of cracks.

Despite the investment, the problem is, it was still.very limited in scope.

And still is today.

Yes. He was still a vile dictator who had a thing for looting and murder though. One of the worst.

Dictators - from Commodus to Mobutu to Mohammed bin Salman - have always used sports to try to clean up their image. I recall a Tell magazine headline "Abacha in Trouble: Despite Eagles' Victory, His Problems Mount." Gani Fawehinmi also said in an interview that Abacha was carrying Super Eagles on his head to deflect attention.

More like we don't have the kind of structure needed to win world cups

A decent youth structure from cradle to adulthood, a decent league football structure and even things like a decent education system and decent nutrition system

We also don't have a good enough sports structure in our schools, especially in secondary and university level

Even when we do well, the victories hid a lot of cracks and issues

But even as we were.winning, youth sports was in decline

Then there is the allegation of age cheating among our footballers

The players those days were hungry, determined, desperate and patriotic.
