One of my brothers made a post yesterday that hit deeper than most realize. He simply emphasized how lawyers are transiting "From Wig to Skit: A Silent Crisis in the Legal Profession". He said, “5,000+ called to bar… get ready for more content creators.” We laughed. But I couldn’t shake off the weight of it. Because underneath that joke is a crisis—one that we’re all pretending not to see. In a country where it takes 7–8 years (and sometimes more) to become a lawyer, it's tragic that many of our brightest legal minds are abandoning the courtrooms and contracts for comedy skits and influencer deals. It’s not that content creation is wrong—far from it. But when the system is so broken that people invest close to a decade in education only to pivot into trends that require none of that training, we need to pause and ask: What are we doing to the profession? What are we doing to justice? What are we doing to society? Even worse, we now face another dilemma—people with criminal intent earning legal badges. Not to uphold the law, but to hide behind it. When law loses its honour, society loses its compass. But here’s the shift I want to encourage: Instead of throwing your law degree into the ocean of virality, how about pouring it into innovation? LawTech. JusticeTech. Legal operations. Contract automation. Rights protection platforms. Case management systems. There’s so much to build, so much to fix. If you're a legal professional with an idea—or if you want to explore how to apply your legal knowledge in the tech, civic, or impact space—let’s talk. I’m passionate about helping people turn ideas into real, scalable solutions. Africa doesn’t just need more lawyers or more content. It needs legal builders and justice innovators. Your law degree is not a waste. Let’s put it to work. Okereke Inno. Product manager, Roots N Squares rootsnsquares.com/tools |

TechBoss65:In a country where law and justice is GLARINGLY is reduced to "technicalities" to favour the highest bidders, legal practice is only a script. Why should we blame these new wigs for choosing proper drama over legal drama? |

damosky12:Trust me, I understand the challenges. All of are on these. However, this post isn't about blaming. But an outburst that things are getting back, suggesting a way forward and explaining how even criminals are taking advantage of the profession. Thanks for lending your voice. |

TechBoss65:That’s largely true; however, the proposed solutions will require a full dive into tech. Fields like JusticeTech, LawTech, etc are technology-driven areas where technology, not legal professionals, is taking the lead. There are, however, numerous domains where lawyers can effectively leverage their expertise and thrive; areas like intellectual property, GRC, cybersecurity, information security governance, fintech governance, AML, data protection, corp governance, investment advisory (venture capital advisor), capital market advisory, etc. If you choose to practise litigation, consider specialising in a less common area such as maritime law, cybercrime, public-private partnerships, or mergers and acquisitions. I currently lead a GRC team and also mentor fellow lawyers. As the world continues to evolve rapidly, legal practitioners must innovate or risk being left behind. |

The role of brilliant, young, and independent lawyers remains undeniably vital in our society. While the initial years post-call may present challenges, particularly during pupillage when establishing one's own chambers is not yet feasible, the trajectory thereafter promises significant opportunities. I firmly believe the legal profession is a noble and elegant one. Its practitioners, especially those who demonstrate genuine intelligence and comprehensive knowledge – rather than merely passing exams through questionable means – should never find themselves compelled to seek alternative, incongruous paths for sustenance. The recent foray of Uju, the former Minister for Women's Affairs, into comedy skits mere days after her dismissal, regrettably suggests a prior intellectual vacancy. Her tenure as Minister, marked by continuous public embarrassment, further supports this inference. This observation, however, should not be misconstrued to imply that individuals who diligently pursue and complete their legal education lack promising futures. Indeed, like Chidoka, I too harbor a lifelong ambition to become a lawyer, a pursuit I intend to embark upon despite my established projections in medical practice. |

The law does not allow Lawyers to market or promote their services— directly. So maybe this is their one avenue to promote their services. |
