9 Things Lagos Uber Drivers Will Tell You That Sound Like Jokes But Are Facts by phosky(op): 3:24pm On Jul 12, 2025
If you’ve ever taken an Uber or Bolt ride in Lagos, then you already know: the journey is never just about going from Point A to B — it’s a full-on drama series, and your driver is always the lead actor. From wild excuses to legendary one-liners, Lagos e-hailing drivers have turned ride-sharing into street comedy. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Here are 9 things Lagos Uber drivers say that sound like jokes — but sadly, they’re 100% real.

1. “AC no dey work, but breeze go blow.

Ah yes — the classic bait and switch. You booked “Comfort” with AC, but what you got is open-window economy mode. Somehow, they still want 5 stars because “at least breeze dey blow.”

2. “Fuel too cost. Abeg reduce your destination.”

Nothing screams Lagos Uber like a driver asking you to edit your own trip because his tank is on red and “fuel don reach ₦1,200 per litre.” Oga, na ride you dey do or donation?

3. “Madam I no get change.”

Lagos drivers invented cashless bullying. You’ll pay ₦2,000 for a ₦1,300 ride, and suddenly it’s a national crisis to find ₦700 change. “Make I buy gala and pure water for you?” Oya na 🙄

4. “This app dey lie; your house far pass Wetin I see.”

No matter how accurate Google Maps is, your driver will always act like you teleported to Benin Republic. “But why your house bend like that?” Bros, na road we dey.

5. “I dey front gate. Abeg come outside.”

Translation: I’m still in traffic 3 streets away and I haven’t even made the U-turn. Why say the truth when you can lie with confidence?

6. “I go cancel if you no reach here in 2 minutes.”

This one hits different. You’re running down from the 3rd floor and the driver is hovering over the cancel button like Thanos. Just pray he has patience — or you’ll be paying ₦700 cancellation fee for no reason.

7. “You fit help me find fuel for that Total station?”

Your Bolt ride just turned into a fuel hunting mission. Now you’re holding jerry can and forming “Oando apprentice” because the driver refused to buy fuel before picking you.

8. “I no dey go that side at night. Wahala too much.”

You’re heading home, it’s 9PM, and your driver suddenly remembers his spiritual boundary stops at Obalende. Sir, what happened to “anywhere you go, I go”?

9. “Abeg rate me 5 stars, even though the trip rough small.”

After a ride that nearly gave you whiplash, no AC, missed turns, and prayer warrior FM on loudspeaker — your driver still wants a glowing review. Because, “na hustle we dey hustle.”
Final Thoughts

In Lagos, Uber and Bolt drivers are more than drivers — they’re storytellers, bargain kings, and sometimes… unintentional comedians. You may get delayed, frustrated, or overcharged — but you’ll always leave with a story.

If you’ve heard any of these lines (or worse), share your wildest Uber experience in the comments. And remember: next time your driver says “just small delay,” bring patience, water, and maybe a power bank — you might need it.

Re: 9 Things Lagos Uber Drivers Will Tell You That Sound Like Jokes But Are Facts by 3seriez(m): 5:22pm On Jul 12, 2025
The annoying one is when the app tells you the fare but after calling the driver would be negotiating for a higher fare. If I'm not rushing, I just cancel the order.
Re: 9 Things Lagos Uber Drivers Will Tell You That Sound Like Jokes But Are Facts by Bittersweetnig(m): 5:22pm On Jul 12, 2025
You lied, Lagos persangers don't take nonsense from drivers, they will reject you at pickup point if your AC isn't working, most ladies won't show up 15minutes after you arrived at pickup point, you can take 25minutes ride and spend 4hours in the traffic, its none of persangers business. They paid exact what was agreed. Lagos Uber driver are trying. Only male persangers are the best, they understand every situations and assist drivers, but you see those hookups ladies, you have to threaten to cancel ride, they can misbehave.

I almost always ask for AC to be switched off.

I prefer the air from outside even if that too is polluted.

I find the air inside some of those cars impossible to breath in.

Also breathing the same recirculating air, in a closed off small cubicle, as a stranger whose state of health I know nothing of scares me. Covid, and tuberculosis, always at the back of my mind.

My fears are probably irrational, but I prefer that kind of irrationality.
Re: 9 Things Lagos Uber Drivers Will Tell You That Sound Like Jokes But Are Facts by Judolisco(m):
When I was driving bolt, women and girls no 2 dey annoy me...

But u see some guys behaving like ladies...... Although throughout my 2yrs of driving my AC worked.... But no be everytime person go dey on AC now.... The first thing some people go ask na bro abeg on AC, some will even ask you why don't you have their favourite songs on your playlists....
D advantage of driving uber to me is that u get to meet so many people with different behaviours.. Good and bad... Na uber carry me enter presidential villa twice, I never even knew d villa was there and I dey pass dat side almost every day
Re: 9 Things Lagos Uber Drivers Will Tell You That Sound Like Jokes But Are Facts by Offpoint1:
I used Uber almost daily, either for trip or delivery. I've never experienced none of the above.

The only conversation I have with an Uber driver is their first confirmation calls and confirmation pick up questions "Are you Mr Offpoint?" "Cash or cashless" and no further conversation after that.

I always sat behind the driver's seat and I made zero eyes contact till I dropped.

Things that has become habitual to me:

1. I always rate my drivers/riders 5 stars.

2. If for whatever reasons I delayed them more than 5 minutes, I always tip them extra plus tons of apologies.

3. I tip them extra cash when there's traffic and the trip took longer than estimated.

4. I tip them if I'm going to locations I'm not familiar with and we had a little hassle locating my destination.

5. If I know the price shown on the app is lower than what it's expected of the distance, I will pay them extra.

6. If I have luggage I always inform them ahead.

If you get to my pick up point and there's unforseen circumstances I decided to cancel the trip, I'll compensate them with 30-50% of the trip cost
I'm not interested in whatever vehicle they are driving, whether with AC or not, as long as it can get to my destination.

I respect genuine hustlers and I treat them with topmost respect.

When I read bad stories about drivers, I have the feelings that 98% of the escalation is always from the passengers and not Uber drivers/riders.
Most of our Nigerian people tend to have this bossy altitude once they're paying you for something.

I do Uber but I don't do any of the shit you listed. The only one close is change or collecting balance.
Abeg do a transfer or hold your exact fund
I will never go down to get change for a rider, God forbid.
I go 3weeks without spending cash so I prefer transfer.
You didn't even talk about renegotiating ride fare, rude rider or driver, eating in the car, putting legs on the seat, dirty vehicle (especially interior), etc.
If you have excess luggage, market loads, bad roads, crazy traffic situation, etc, I'm giving you my price, if you are not comfortable, cancel and book the next ride.
I don't even like driving without AC, so I ensure my AC is working, anytime it's faulty, I don't work, except it develops fault while I'm on ride or on my way to pickup.
You don't enter my vehicle to also start dictating how my radio should work, turn off your radio or tune to this station, let me connect your Bluetooth, etc, if I noticed you are in a meeting, I will turn it off without you asking, and my radio is never loud so won't create noise, you can actually make a request and I will grant it, but if you dish an order, you are moving with the next vehicle not mine, as I'm cancelling your trip if you insist despite me declining.
Riders should learn to understand difference between Rights and Privileges
Re: 9 Things Lagos Uber Drivers Will Tell You That Sound Like Jokes But Are Facts by Mabuggi88:
One told me to please let's end the ride because we could not locate the street and location we were going to, meanwhile Time for the journey was still enough like 8mins. I was shocked, I just get down pay and use manual way to locate the place, I didn't want to engage in altercations because I need to unnerve at where I'm going to.
Meanwhile, in all my rides bookings I only book comfort rides but I never feel any comfort, even some of them do not have ACs. Those people eeh, I have just mastered them, anything I see I take, no going to discuss anything with you, just take me to my destination

Most of what you wrote up there are not true, number 1 no passenger will enter an Uber or bolt without AC.
No passenger will help you go find fuel.
The money for the ride reads as far as the trip continue wether in traffic or not so Uber driver won't tell you no I am not going again bcus your place is far. Is it not his money.
I have ride under Bolt and I know what I'm saying

Money no longer read again sir, except it's surge timing.
On Uber n Bolt now, it will show the price the driver is getting when the request pops up, if you are going from Ikeja to VI, either you take 3rd MB or Eko bridge, the fare won't change from what was shown to the driver at the beginning of the trip, but if it's a surge pricing, it will read.
So if you pick a trip going to Ajah from Ikeja, and there is no Surge in Ikeja as at the time you took the trip, then you got stuck in traffic at Lekki, even if the estimate was 1hr and you used 2hrs, Na Oyo you dey.

Hmmm.... Didn't know about that now. I last work as a Bolt driver in 2022. Then, even if the amount read 2k to the passenger, once you're inside traffic it will continue reading o. And sometimes you may get to the destination and 2.5k or more will pop up.
So this new one is beneficial to passengers not drivers. And passengers will not want you to put off your engine inside the traffic bcus of they want AC steady

Exactly, highly beneficial to the riders.
It is only Lagride that is doing distance covered and timing now, others are using estimated distance and time.
But if there is surge, Bolt and Uber too will use your actual distance and time

Last week Saturday, one bolt driver tikd me that my pick up point was bit where I indicated. I explained that the app will take d driver thru a rough and untarred road. I told him to pick okada and I will pay to bring him to me.
The guy insisted that I have to top the fare with 1k after he the end of the trip. I accepted

When he got to me, he was shocked bcoz my voice sounded like a teenager but met a grandma

Anyways, he did not say a word till he dropped me and I had my peace.

No AC and he did not say anything but I did not really need it as it was a rainy morning

grin grin
