Chinese e-commerce company Temu has launched a warehouse in South Africa as part of its efforts to ensure faster delivery and broader product selection for consumers.

The move will intensify competition for South African e-commerce companies, such as Naspers-owned Takealot, as well as international players like Amazon.

"Shoppers in South Africa can now receive their Temu orders in as little as one day, thanks to the e-commerce platform's new local warehouse dispatch option," the Chinese company said in a statement.

Temu stated that by shortening delivery times, the local warehouse model provides South African shoppers with greater convenience and peace of mind.

"It also enables Temu to offer new product categories, such as furniture, home goods, and other bulkier items, that were previously less accessible due to international shipping constraints," the company added.

A Temu spokesperson said the company launched in the USA in 2022 and entered the South African market in 2024, and now operates in over 90 markets worldwide.

Temu's local warehouse dispatch service has already been introduced in countries across Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and now Africa.

The spokesperson, however, added that Temu does not own warehouses but works with trusted third-party logistics providers.

"Under the local fulfillment model, sellers store inventory in local warehouses, manage logistics, and provide after-sales support, allowing for faster delivery and more responsive service," the spokesperson said.

The South African e-commerce ecosystem has seen tremendous growth in recent years and Temu faces competition from both local and global companies.

In July 2024, South African retailer Shoprite Holdings launched an online bulk shopping and delivery service platform for small businesses, including informal stores like spaza shops.

This followed American company Amazon launching its online marketplace in South Africa in May 2024.

Temu's focus on growth in South Africa is in line with data from Statista, which forecasts that revenue in South Africa's e-commerce market will reach US$7.32 billion by the end of 2025.

Statista said revenue is expected to show an annual growth rate of 9.49%, resulting in a market volume of $10.52 billion by 2029.

Chinese govt grants and subsidies to Chinese companies is one reason Chinese companies are taking over the world. Jumia will close shop once temu open warehouse in Nigeria. Imagine temu enjoys free shipping from Chinese govt and financial grants. They spent $1.5 billion on adverts in one year. Jumia spent €800 million in 8 years. E-commerce seems to be the toughest business to start because they all appear to run unprofitable business model for a start

Intent on scamming.

Why will a reputable seller hide information, deceive with fake ads or product image only to go and write something else in description?

Temu allows it therefore they enable them

I ordered a face cap that was supposed to be Jeans material for 7k which is basically the same price as it would cost in a boutique here but when it was delivered, it was basically a nylon material. I used to talk like you, claiming people complaining didn't really know how to order until I ordered long sleeve and facecap from Temu

Nigerian government must do everything possible to protect Nigerian businesses.

Temu should not be allowed to shutdown Nigerian e-commerce businesses in the name of unhealthy competition because Chinese government won't allow it in China.

Before you argue with me, let me inform you that you cannot register a company in China without a Chinese national having a majority stake/share in the business.

So therefore Nigerian government should find a way to make temu operate under strict business rules that will make it difficult for them to overrun other Nigerian e-commerce businesses like Jumia, Konga, etc.

One of such policies is to force Temu to open their platform to allow Nigerian merchants and entrepreneurs sell on Temu and not make it available to only Chinese and other developed country merchants. That way, Nigerians will be empowered and Temu won't be pocketing the whole profit they will make from Nigeria alone.

Anyone close to Minister of commerce, trade, finance, etc should please send them my comment
Re: Same-day Delivery As Temu Opens Warehouse In South Africa - PICTURES by MyExpression(m):
This is my opinion, but it is drawn from existing in-house data.
Most customers that order on Temu, don't follow through on their purchase.
We have had higher percentage of order cancellation from ecomm vendors who sell stuffs on Temu.
Temu still has a low trust factor, and rightly so, coz there has been legit complaints about buying low quality clones from Temu.

Order fulfillment isn't on Temu, they don't have the assets.

The glory for same-day deliveries should go to the logistics industry of South Africa
