Holy Matrimony Gone Wrong! 4 Nigerian Pastors Whose Marriages Crashed – What Really Happened?

They preach fire. They cast out demons. They lead thousands. But behind the pulpit, even some of Nigeria’s most powerful men of God have faced the same battle many regular couples do: broken marriages. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

While the Bible says “God hates divorce”, life sometimes throws curveballs, even at the anointed. These pastors stood at the altar… not once, but twice in some cases… and still ended up signing divorce papers!

From infidelity scandals to irreconcilable differences, here’s a jaw-dropping look at four famous Nigerian pastors whose marriages didn’t survive the storm.

🙏 1. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome – Christ Embassy’s Power Couple Split!

You probably grew up seeing Pastor Chris Oyakhilome and his wife Anita as the perfect Christian couple. After all, they built Christ Embassy into one of the biggest ministries in the world.

Married in 1991 and blessed with two daughters, everything seemed picture-perfect… until it wasn’t.

By 2014, Anita had vanished from ministry events and even from the church’s official website. Then came the bombshell: divorce proceedings in London, citing adultery and unreasonable behavior. The divorce was finalized in 2016.

Pastor Chris later hinted that the breakup was due to vision mismatch—Anita no longer shared his spiritual goals. Others whispered about distance issues, with him in Nigeria and her in the UK most of the year.

Till date, neither has remarried. The once-envied marriage is now a cautionary tale in Christendom.

🕊️ 2. Rev. Chris Okotie – From Pop Star to Twice-Divorced Pastor

Pastor Chris Okotie went from pop music stardom to preaching in suits—but his love life has been anything but smooth.

His first marriage to Tyna ended in 2001, childless after 15 years. In 2008, he tried again with Stephanie Henshaw, a mother of three from previous marriages. Sadly, the union crashed by 2012.

In his church, Pastor Okotie casually dropped the bomb during a Sunday service:

“Stephanie and I are no longer married… due to irreconcilable differences.”

Years later, he told BBC Pidgin that God never wanted him to marry in the first place, saying:

“God told me to be like Apostle Paul. I didn’t listen then, but now I understand. Marriage is not for me anymore.”

So yeah, don’t expect another wedding invitation from him.

💍 3. Pastor Ituah Ighodalo – When Church and Love Collide

Before he became the face of Trinity House, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo was a respected figure in RCCG. But his decision to remarry after a failed first marriage in 1995 caused waves.

His marriage to beauty queen and events guru Ibidunni Ajayi in 2007 cost him his RCCG pastoral seat. So, he launched his own church.

Ironically, the RCCG leadership had previously urged him to find a wife to help manage church responsibilities. They approved his remarriage—but the public wasn’t as forgiving.

After Ibidunni’s tragic death in 2020, Ituah has stayed single. He once shared on Arise TV:

“If I had my way, I’d stay single. But who knows what the future holds… My daughter already warned me not to remarry.”

🔥 4. Prophet Joshua Iginla – A Scandal Made for Social Media

No one saw it coming. In 2019, Prophet Joshua Iginla, the firebrand preacher behind Champions Royal Assembly, stood before his congregation and confessed — both he and his wife had cheated. Yes, both!

He claimed he forgave her for having a child outside wedlock, but when it was his turn, she couldn’t extend the same grace.

“I covered her up when she slipped… but when I messed up, she threw me under the bus,” he said, in what became a viral moment.

He later remarried a South African woman, Stella Zimasa, with whom he had a child. Meanwhile, his ex-wife Yemisi clapped back, saying:

“All three of my children are his. I’ve never lived a promiscuous life. I’m speaking up for my kids.”

Whew! The tea was steaming on that one.
🧠 Final Thoughts: Even the Anointed Bleed

Marriage isn’t easy—even for those carrying anointing oil in their briefcase.

These pastors, once seen as the perfect examples of godly unions, prove one thing: even spiritual giants are still human.

Whether it’s infidelity, mismatched visions, or simply personal growth in different directions, their stories are a reminder that faith doesn’t always guarantee fairy tales.

So the next time someone says “God told me he’s the one,” just smile and say, “I hope God also told him the same.”

The list of once-popular ministers who have gone through divorce is extensive, if I may say so.

This is an interesting write up..
Marriage is dicy. If you get it right, you wonder how good the Lord has being to you; but if the other way around, you wonder how such thing would have happened to you because you believe you never planned it that way.
It's crazy, indeed.
Sorry for quoting such a long peace. It was never intended.

it goes to tell you that marriage is not a do or die affair.. whoever invented the vows, till death do us apart.. failed to stipulate the healthy conditions that must be met for the vow to take effect.. how can U say in sickness and in health? I SHOULD REMAIN MARRIED TO YOU EVEN WHEN YOU WENT AND DID DIRTY AND CATCH A DISEASE?

Marriage is not a do or die affair

Better to be separated and stay true to God than staying in a toxic marriage that won’t glorify God at the end of the day

Kudos to pastor Chris and Anita, no drama

We must also understand that marriage as an institution requires man to make it work and not God, And yes God has given us the ability to

Anyone who worships the so-called Men of God has himself / herself to blame.

They breathe like everyone else. Their bazookas work just everyone else. Even better at times undecided shocked
Re: 4 Nigerian Pastors Whose Marriages Crashed by Fiscus105(m):
Marriage needs full understanding & compromise between two grown up adults. Meanwhile, the "most reason" why marriages are collapsing is lack of compromise. Not money or even infidelity from man's side as many people hinge upon.

Compromise will make you see your partner as ur son/daughter when dealing with each other, we all know how we compromise our comfort to make our kids better in future, if we can put 1/4 of such energy in it, 70% of marriages that packing up would remain intact.

Hope the OP is happily married for years o 😁 because to criticize other people's marriages that failed for reasons you have little knowledge about is like sowing a seed you won't want to reap it's fruit later on.

Mentioning that "the Bible says “God hates divorce”, life sometimes throws curveballs, even at the anointed. These pastors stood at the altar… not once, but twice in some cases… and still ended up signing divorce papers!"

While ignoring what Jesus, the word of God said, divorce is permitted in the case of fornication and adultery, and to be frank any abusive wicked human who is selfish and sells their birthright as a child of God is a fornicator like Esau. Isn't it written do not be UNEQUALLY yoked, even Paul wrote that such union isn't binding if the unbeliever leaves.

Please let's apply wisdom, the wisdom of God, and if any lack it let them ask God for it.

This reminds me of the scripture that says those who wish to marry will pass through a lot of tribulations. Unfortunately nobody is free from this tribulations not even big men of God or well know pastors

So what is the essence of bringing this up again on a Sunday morning when people should be in Church having fellowship with other brethren?

You are mischievous 😉 to say the least.

Hiss!

There’s no menu to keep marriages, even if you are rich or poor if the marriage want to crash it will crash, as rich and wealthy as Jeff Bezos his marriage still crash so that is to say marriage is not a do or die affair if you can’t handle it anymore better walk away than to be sorry later, use Osinachi death as a key example that woman could’ve still be alive if she walk away on time

Jesus was never married!

Even Paul too!

How many disciples got married? Not up to 3 out of the twelve!

I don't think Christians are supposed to get married!

No drama with court papers on social media and pulpit smear campaigns in some branches against Anita.

Abeg rest they are all the same except the one whose wife passed.

The number one reason for marriage collapse is third party and external interferences, I have seen Christians divorce each based on ridiculous things like belonging to different sects and denominations with thier respective pastors in connivance
