War is a game of numbers. In case that the war results in land war, you will need boots on ground to fight. And having very small population also means small economy amd little money to fight a prolonged war - although America has helped in this aspects by single handedly footing the bills for Israel.

And landmass also plays a very huge role. Having very small landmass meams that you can more effectively secure it against lone missiles. But in the event that it gets overwhelmed, a few tens of thousands of missiles that make impact - or a single nuclear or powerful chemical missiles will eliminate EVERY single soul.
