syntekelite:Packing as how? Kindly clarify. epainos:So Aguda is under which LGA? You can't limit Surulere to only the porchest streets like Bode Thomas and Adeniran ogunsaya or Ogunlana drive na. Iponri, Aguda, Ijesha, Lawanson are all part of Surulere. If you truly grew up in Lere, you'd know this. |

datola:Food has always been cheap in Surulere, right from the stone age. The areas with the cheapest food in Lagos is Surulere, Mushin, Ilasamaja, Lawanson and parts of Ijesha. At Ayilara, we used to buy rice, beans and dodo from 12 midnight until 5 am from one Benin woman. Very hot fresh and delicious. Na just waka and buy there. The same for Ojuelegba. That Ojuelegba would always remind us of Fela’s song. Everywhere traffic, enjoyment and people. Na 24 hours waka for Ojuelegba everyday. What about masquerades during Christmas. Calabar people dey give us masquerades then. Chai! You can buy your fish for cheap rates at Lawanson bus stop and Ojuelegba road. If you never lived in Surulere, you missed a lot. I grew in Salawu street, that’s close to Randle General hospital. It was actually a health center before it was upgraded. It was a beautiful experience, going from there to school then at municipal bus stop. Ikate then was too sweet also where we attended school. Very quiet neighborhood with bad roads then. There were no okadas and you’d walk for long after playing football and getting very dirty. Ah. Lagos sweet before until dem carry politics scatter everywhere. Na so be Ilasamaja. Amala everywhere very cheap. Also the regular akara, yam, dodo with fried shining nose fish. Na so we see am until Lagos Island carry us waka! |

seborrhic:Sorry Fela did not make Ojuelegba popular, even though his song described the traffic and human confusion around Ojuelegba. That place was always there, with no bridge then. It was a popular place where buses from the North, South, East and West arrived. People knew where to pick up their friends and loved ones then. There were too many joints with cheap foods and Ashawo joints for bus drivers and everyone. There were night clubs and it was 24 hours busy. Marcopolo, and Lagos state transport buses stopped there. It was a dispersal center to other areas of Lagos, just like Yaba bus stop. Fela’s Kalakuta republic was on Agege Motor road, as it was called, backing the Ojuelegba army barracks then until OBJ ordered soldiers to destroy the place. He actually started in Alagomeji, Yaba and then to Shitta in Surulere, with Afrobeats, before relocating to the finally destroyed Kalakuta republic. He moved from there to Pepple street, Ikeja where we have computer village today and to Gbemisola street, as his residence. His song promoted Ojuelegba, but it was a very popular place before then. Femi and his siblings lived in Ikate on Oduduwa street with their mum then. The original headquarters of ashawo na Ajegunle and Amukoko. If you like to patronize you fit go there, no be Ojuelegba. I hope you and others enjoyed this piece by me. |

Hmmmm, during my days at Unilag, I do go with my coursemate to her house at Bode Thomas. Sometimes, I will spend a week or two with her during the holiday. Her mom is very nice (God bless her for me). We would go everywhere including Rita Lori to swim and that Chinese restaurant close to shop rite. And I dated her brother until he travelled to Germany. What a wonderful world! |

ceejay80s:Sorry bro, Aguda was never recognized as Surulere. Aguda was a new found area. In those days, Surulere was termed the areas covering Ojuelegba, Cole street, Barracks on the right, up to the national stadium, Alaka, Bode Thomas, Eric Moore, Shitta Bey, Masha, Ikate and Lawanson, Ramoni, just before the Ijesha intersection, when coming from Mushin. You see that Ogunlana drive as you are moving towards Animasaun, it stopped at the end, where we had Census. The whole of that end to Brown road, etc were Aguda. Again the boundary between Aguda and Ijesha ends at that Canal. The total front where Rita Lori hotel was situated was called Aguda. The right drive into Aguda from there was not called Surulere but Aguda. Some people started writing their addresses as Aguda, Surulere, just to give the sense of belonging. Orile bus stop was newly developing. OBJ constructed that road to Badagry. Breweries was called Iganmu. When you enter that breweries road from Costain, you moved yo the end, cross the road and turn left facing the Iganmu bridge, were and all Iganmu. Sari Iganmu was an afterthought when Orile was as fast developing and they are wanted also to have Iganmu as a name. The same went for people who then lived on Kirikiri road, who claimed Apapa, instead of Ajegunle. You can walk from Ramoni off Lawanson road to Kilo, connecting NEPA, Aguda and Ijesha in less than one hour, without knowing that you are simply rigmaroling. That’s the beauty of the area, with plenty of friends and family. I lived in Aguda and I lived just by the present day General hospital, Randle Avenue. With these few historical facts, I hope I have been able to convince you and not confuse you that Aguda is not Surulere. |

ElevationD:Ok.I doff my hat for your deep grasp of the history of the place. Can't argue with this your level of knowledge of that axis. Felt Empire was one of the axis that made Surulere popular during days of Fela |
