The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has asked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South in the interest of equity, unity and national cohesion.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, spoke yesterday in Ilọrin, at the sideline of the 2nd Annual Colloquium of Associate Professor Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia, a former APC governorship aspirant in Kwara State.

Recall that a coalition of opposition parties led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, recently adopted the ADC as a platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 poll.

They also named a former Senate President, David Mark, and former Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, as interim national chairman and secretary, respectively.

But while Atiku, former presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has interest in the ADC presidential ticket, Obi and a former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, who are both members of the coalition that adopted the ADC had in their separate declarations promised to do only one term of four years if elected.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Trust yesterday, Obi said, “Why should we have a northerner again when we can easily allow the south to complete their tenure to promote unity and cohesiveness? Afterwards, our northern brothers can take up their eight years.

“We are urging this coalition to cede the presidential ticket to the South and let us finish this matter.”

Obi, who was represented by the National Coordinator of Obidients Movement, Dr Tanko Yunusa, described his chances in the 2027 elections as very bright, saying he remains a capable and committed leader ready to transform Nigeria.

“I urge the coalition to seize this opportunity and avoid repeating the kind of political error that led to the late Moshood Abiola debacle.

“Obi has already stated that he will contest in 2027 whether we get the coalition ticket or not. So we are not even contemplating whether or not he will run. But when we get to that level, the platform will be revealed,” he added.

Speaking in Ilorin, Kwara State, during the second annual colloquium held in honour of the late academic and political figure, Associate Professor Abdulmumin Yinka Ajia, Obi addressed a gathering of political stakeholders, academics, and civil society leaders. He expressed concern over what he described as the ongoing imbalance in Nigeria’s political leadership structure, stressing the importance of rotating power between the North and South to maintain national harmony.

“Nigeria can only move forward if every part of the country feels included and is given a fair chance to lead,” Obi stated. “Zoning the 2027 presidency to the South will help heal divisions and strengthen our unity.”

Obi's remarks come amid reports of growing opposition coalitions under the ADC umbrella, involving major political figures such as Atiku Abubakar and David Mark. This evolving alliance is said to be positioning itself as a strong alternative to the ruling party in the next election cycle.

The former Anambra State governor urged political leaders to adopt principles of justice and regional inclusion in building alliances. “Why not let the South complete its tenure?” Obi asked. “After that, our northern brothers can take their turn. This is how we foster peace, stability, and mutual respect.”

Obi's call adds to the ongoing national discourse on power rotation, with many seeing it as a vital step toward ensuring inclusivity and mitigating regional tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.

I don't think Atiku can or should be able to defeat Obi in Primaries if the People in the Party are right-thinking. It is Southern 8 Years turn for crying out loud. ADC should naturally unopposed give the Presidential Ticket to Peter Obi. We shall massively vote for Obi if they allow him, if they deny him the ticked posterity would Judge them born-to-rule mentality.

Obi in that very statement has just confirmed it,coalition in dilemma......"the fact he is making it tacitly clear shows the coalition is a mere paper one😀,......all this should have been sorted before the formation,tinubu had ambitions in 2013 so did ogbonaya onu of blessed memory,atiku,RMK,,amaechi etc but all agreed to support whoever emerged but with obi declaring this openly it has proven us right that the coalition is like the feet of Nebuchadnezzar in the dream of Daniel.....dilemma to the coalition!!
