Dead Over Debt: How a Lagos Artisan Died After Army Sergeant’s ‘Punishment’ Over ₦1.5M POP Job

He Didn’t Run from Battle — He Just Couldn’t Finish POP”

What started as a business deal in Ikotun, Lagos has ended in tragedy — and now, the streets are angry. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Yahaya, an artisan known for Plaster of Paris (POP) ceiling work, is dead — allegedly after being tortured by a Nigerian Army Sergeant, Balogun Oluwafemi, over an unpaid ₦1.5 million job.

According to police reports and eyewitnesses, the whole mess began when a client, Olamide Sodiq Adeosun, hired Yahaya for a POP installation at his house — a property located opposite Aso Rock Hotel on Abaranje Road.

🧱 The Job Yahaya Never Finished
Adeosun allegedly paid Yahaya a hefty ₦1.5 million to get the POP work done. But somewhere along the line, the job remained incomplete, and Yahaya reportedly went off the grid — no refund, no explanations, just silence.

Frustrated, Adeosun did what many Lagosians now see as dangerous logic — he called in a “friend in uniform.”

🪖 Enter: Sergeant Oluwafemi — Soldier, Not Judge
Instead of reporting the matter through civil means, Adeosun reportedly brought Army Sergeant Balogun Oluwafemi, and another unnamed military man, to “help” recover the money.

But this wasn’t negotiation — this was a street-style military justice.
Yahaya was allegedly forced to perform “frog jumps” under the scorching Lagos sun as a form of punishment.

According to witnesses:

“The artisan collapsed during the torture… they tried to revive him, but it was too late.”

He was rushed to Isolo General Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

🕵️‍♂️ What Police Are Saying
The Ikotun Divisional Police Officer and his team swung into action. They recovered Yahaya’s body and have since moved it to Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, for an autopsy.

Olamide Sodiq Adeosun is now in police custody, and an investigation is underway to determine the level of involvement of the army officers.

As of now, the Nigerian Army has not released an official statement — but Lagosians are already shouting: “This must not be another case swept under the carpet!”

💬 Street Reactions: Lagosians Are Not Smiling
“Na POP job oh! Not a robbery case, not Yahoo. And they ended his life?” — Wasiu, roadside mechanic, Abaranje

“This is why people are scared of soldiers. You no fit settle matter without power show?” — Doyin, hair stylist, Ikotun

“When civilians start inviting soldiers to collect debt, everyone is in danger.” — Ife, student

🚫 Why This Is Bigger Than One Case
This incident shines a harsh light on a growing Lagos trend: “Call your friend in uniform.”

From landlord-tenant disputes to failed business deals, civilians are increasingly bypassing the legal system and involving military personnel to settle scores.

But it’s not just illegal — it’s becoming deadly.

Yahaya didn’t deserve to die.
He deserved due process.
He deserved life.

🛑 Eyes of Lagos Breakdown: What Went Wrong?
🔍 Action 🚨 Reality Check
Military called in for civil matter Illegal use of force
Torture used as “punishment” Violation of human rights
Civilian death from army interference Potential manslaughter case
No army statement Public distrust building fast
⚖️ The Call for Justice
Lagosians are watching. The student unions are talking. Activists are warming up their hashtags. This case must not be buried like so many others.

We’re demanding:

An official statement from the Nigerian Army

Full investigation by police and military

Justice for Yahaya and his family

Because no uniform, no matter how powerful, should ever be a license to kill.

I am patiently waiting for that day when Mr A and Mr B will be at loggerhead especially in the North.

Mr A: Calls his soldier brother.

Mr B : calls his own Soldier friend.

Two soldiers don show, but will they fight themselves because of a friend or a brother or they would walk away from the scene??

I still dey wait for that day....

Apart from the investigations by the police, the family of the deceased should institute a fundamental rights enforcement proceedings against guy and the military claiming damages of at least 1 billion naira. Nobody has the right to treat another person in such undignified manner.

when you are given a job to do and you have been paid or half paid ,since you agreed to do the job with half payment ,then be ready to face anything that comes with the half payment .then do the job ,

although when you pay some full payment ,they run away ,

so just be good in what you do .

say no to crime of any type .

Nigerian Army and unprofessionalism, they run from boko boys and disturn civilians in the city forming big boys in uniform, I am pretty sure it is not just froq jump as stated here, there must be some serious tying , beating and all sorts of brutality.

the long and very expensive process of legal procedures right from the police station is what made that landlord call soldiers to punish the pop guy but unfortunately, death was the result

If he had done the job he was paid to do, this would not have happened.

Some People are too dubious for chrissake. Of course as an artisan he feels the other man is a big man and 1.5 million means nothin to him.

This is how most Nigerian workers think. You hire them for a job and pay them, they start playing you forgetting the other person also has emotions and struggles on his own end too.

I can tell you everyone of us has passed through similar trying times in the hands of other people.

It's frustrating and some people even have to give up their own money just because they have nothing else to do.

If this man no sabi anybody, the artisan for chop the money just like that. It's not fair to work under the sun for your money and one thief without gun will just want to steal it.

I'm not supportive the employer as someone is now dead but the frustration he must have passed through after working hard for his money is not something anyone deserves.

The artisan caused his own death and there's just no other way to think this matter.

Lets learn to approach the court of law on issues like this

Dear artisan, always do people's job on time instead of spending their money on frivolities, I've seen a guy who collected 350k for a window job some years back & this guy spent everything on virtual betting in just one day

It happened a lot in Abuja during Abacha's reign of terror.

Army Vs Army, Army Vs DSS, police just dey observe......and run if the shit gets real.

An officer's wife had a security detail and they tried to oppress an elderly man in a Benz......alas! he was a General! He piled all the men on the front passenger seat and drove them off......e don be for dem! The woman was left there by the road.

I saw a police man attempt to stop a car, and when it didn't stop, he insulted the driver. The car stopped, a guy got out, and told the cop "come here". Popo wan run, but e no fit! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Those were crazy days!

If you feel your life is valuable, don't put it on the line. Do what you're paid to do.

It's bad we are now hiding behind the law to commit evil.

You're talking about being treated in an undignified manner, did the artisan treat the employer in a dignified manner?

Before this matter reach soldier, we all know the amount of frustration that man went through.

Soldier is always a last resort for people.

Truth hurts.

See all the artisans supporting the dead guy.

He took money and disappeared....no contact no explanation. Go to police, they'll tell you "civil case"

I bet the dead dude must've made statements like " there's nothing you can do"... or "even 9ja dey owe"

It's manslaughter case...cos the owner didn't plan to kill him.

If he had honored the deal, this wouldnt happen...unfortunately. he's dead...now someone is in trouble

Artisans need to stop this trend of cheating people and relying on pity.

One was reported to us last week..the artisan is making mouth now...when the person involves higher-ups out of frustration now ..he will drop dead.

But why collect money and refuse to deliver the work?
That doesn't justify killing the artisan but some of them can be devil incarnates.
The guy I paid to construct and install alumaco windows ate my money and did only half of the work. He never completed the work or refunded me. I had to hire another person to finish the work.
I truly don't have any pity for this POP man.

We are not savages. People should learn to approach the court of law instead of taking law into their hands.

We have court for Christ sake and hungry lawyers that will take 10k for a case.

This wickedness goes both ways. As an artisan I work for someone who refuse to pay me a dime out of my money.

He said I should do my worst .

The government needs to implement a law whereby each parties honours there deal.. this is a form of security for both parties

I do not support the artisan neither do I support the person that refuse to pay me my money for work done.

The army is not at fault here
