Visa Overstay: US Threatens Nigerians With Deportation, Permanent Travel Ban by TouchNfollow(op): 7:15am On Jul 15, 2025
United States of America has warned Nigerians about overstaying the authorised period granted in their visa, saying that such a violation will result in deportation and a probable permanent travel ban.

This followed a series of travel restrictions and visa curbs affecting Nigerians, announced by the US recently as part of its ongoing immigration crackdown under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The US Mission in Nigeria announced this yesterday in a post on its X handle.

If you remain in the United States beyond your authorised period of stay, you could be deported and could face a permanent ban on travelling to the United States in the future,” the US said in the post.

Early last week, the US announced an update to its visa reciprocity policy for Nigerians, limiting the non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visa to three three-month single entry, citing reciprocity policy, visa overstay, national security and wrong documentations as part of the reasons.

It further announced a fresh $250 mandatory integrity fee for students, workers and tourists’ visas.

In addition to the Visa Integrity Fee, the bill introduces several non-waivable travel-related surcharges.

These include a $24 I-94 fee, a $13 Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) fee for Visa Waiver Program travelers, According to the rule, the surcharge would apply to visa categories, including B-1/B-2 (tourist/business), F and M (students), H-1B (workers), and J (exchange visitors).Under the new rule, only diplomatic applicants in categories A and G would be exempted. The law states unequivocally that in fourteen instances.

The two visa curbs were announced last week after the US mandated social media screening as part of the vetting process for applicants seeking to study in the States.

It had mandated applicants to list all their social media usernames and also remove the privacy settings to allow proper screening.

In the post announcing the measure, the US Embassy in Nigeria said: “Every visa adjudication is a national security decision. Effective immediately, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J non-immigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their personal social media accounts to ‘public’ to facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States.

President Trump has been embarking on strict immigration policy since taking office, enforcing the removal of illegal immigrants from the US.

Trump signed a swathe of executive orders calling for an increased and very strict screening process during the visa-granting process to ensure that those given visas and allowed to enter the United States do not wish to harm citizens.

He further ordered continued screening of immigrants and ensuring that those already within the U.S. do not aid what he deemed as foreign terrorist groups and that they do not bear hostility towards the country.

Couldn’t agree more! World over, and following Trump’s rhetoric, governments are beginning to witch-hunt immigrants — law-abiding ones, too!

I'm waiting for those that say "they just want what is best for their country" and "why not stay back to develop your country".

Same set of people that would leave their own community of origin.

Nobody will arrest, deport and ban you if you don't overstay your visa. People should learn to do the right thing. Obey the rules/laws guiding your visit. Simple!

It's only who do not obey the rules of their visa that will be deported.

Enough of lawlessness!

These sensationalised headlines are grating on the nerves to be honest. Nigerians were not specifically targeted, and while the content of the article agrees with that, the title tells a lie by omission, for clicks. A 20-year-old forum should be above such trite nonsense.

Once you don't have reasonable people leading your country, you lose your respect. That has been the story of Nigeria since 2015.

Ok don't overstay in another man's land ,though trump is simply racist....to be law abiding is not witch hunt, human instincts tends towards lawlessness but government was created to checkmate lawlessness in the society....so that humanity will exist in peace and prosperity... but in this part of the world, government doesn't even know their priorities

Nobody is asking them to open their borders, learn to comprehend. I am saying the noise and threats are just too much. Whatever they wanna do they're free, it's their country.

They recently limited tourist visa to 3 months, they're picking every non-white immigrants and sending them home for overstaying, even some allegedly didn't overstay, threatening countries to accept immigrants from other countries, something that makes no sense.

Anyways, some of you are oyinbo praise singers, no other opinion matters to you.

Why should anyone overstay his legal limit and frown at the repercussion? The US Govt have not said or threatened to do anything new or illegal here.

I hope the United Kingdom and Europe adopt such measures too to curb Visa abuse.

China has many of these measures on ground for many years and they enforce it with facial recognition.

For those of you attacking, put yourself in their shoes, people coming into your country to with no value, you re forced to subsidize their stay with your taxes. They given free accommodation and spending money and subsidizes while the locals are forced to pay more for utilities food and rent.

At some point this will trigger a crises and this is what we re seeing. It behoves migrants to hold their leaders accountable by voting and choosing their leaders, when you allow corruption to fester it breeds a cancer in a nations fabric.

I always knew that the japa trend is not sustainable in the long run, we getting to a point where it will be difficult to leave the country even for good reasons.

Just look at the crazy visa requirements from the US, Canada, UAE for a country once called the giant of Africa.

This is what happens when corruption and criminality is celebrated, it rubs off on decent people from the same country.

They don't subsidise the stay of the immigrants.

In fact, it's the other way round.

The immigrants pay tax but can't benefit from it.
