For context, I sell both new and used tyres because people ask for them. But if it were up to me, I’d stick to new tyres. I get why people buy tokunbo tyres—sometimes, it’s just about what the budget allows at the moment. But here’s something I’ve been thinking about: there are tyres within the ₦60k–₦85k range that come with 2–3 years warranty. Wouldn’t it make more sense to buy a tyre for ₦80k that will last three years instead of a tokunbo tyre for ₦35k–₦50k that might not even give you up to 13 months? I’m not judging, just curious. If you’ve used both, what’s your take? To be honest, tokunbo sometimes does the job, especially if it’s a great grade, but is it really worth it in the long run? Just something that was going through my mind as I rounded up for the day.

The kind of tyres you use depends on what level you are in. Old tyres has its quality but if you want to step out in style get a new tyre. We sell both new and old certified tyres. | Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by QuickTyreNG(op): 7:34pm On Jun 20, 2025 |
They may not be the most famous brands, but a 3-year warranty? That says a lot. |

QuickTyreNG:How do you judge a good used tyre?cos there must be a mechanism for one to say yes, I can use this used tyre on my car. |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by erico2k2(m): 5:37pm On Jul 05, 2025 |
QuickTyreNG:Depend on the source of the tyre, cos we talking used tyres here not dead warn tyres ![]() |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by QuickTyreNG(op): 12:12pm On Jul 07, 2025 |
erico2k2:Good morning sir. There are criteria for getting a good used tyre and these are some of it. Tyre Age – The Old rubber may look fine, but if the year is more than 5 years, don't bother buying. Cracks & Bulges – Check out the tyre to see if they have been excessive patching. Brand & Origin – You should stick to trusted names like Michelin, Dunlop, or Bridgestone so you can get good used tyres. |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by QuickTyreNG(op): 12:18pm On Jul 07, 2025 |
erico2k2:Good afternoon sir, Just like you rightly said, the source of the tyre matters a lot. A lot of used tyre isn’t the same as a dead and worn out tyre. Some used tyres still have solid life in them. it all still falls back on knowing where and what you’re buying |

QuickTyreNG:Right used tyres as in from ABroad ie USA and UK, or Used tyres in and from Nigeria |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by QuickTyreNG(op): 12:58pm On Jul 10, 2025 |
erico2k2:. Great question. Yes, used tyres from Europe, mainly the UK and sometimes the US. The Nigeria used tyres are not just cut out for me. |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by erico2k2(m): 6:53pm On Jul 10, 2025 |
QuickTyreNG:The vast majority of used tyres from the UK and US are mostly OK, reason being that they are gotten from Accident cars or scrap cars. So these might retain 50 percent of its l egal limit or thread. If a brand new car get totalled in 2 years and has done barely 1K miles then its tyres might still be ripe enough for the used tyre market. |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by QuickTyreNG(op): 9:14am On Jul 11, 2025 |
erico2k2:I agree with you and that’s exactly how many of these European tyres end up on the market. A lot still have solid tread life left, the used tyres are not even worn out and they are still in good condition. |

QuickTyreNG:What's your take between linglong, Austone and Boto? |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by Babatundehy: 3:17am On Jan 24 |
Gotocourt:All four tyres on my car are Austone, bought them mid 2022, no issues at all, I have not even had to patch up any of them (this is most likely luck but that is the status). |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by 2cribz: 10:45am On Jan 24 |
Toks tyres Tyres from 235/55/18 hardly wear out |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by Sellfish(m): 7:08pm On Jan 24 |
Babatundehy:Correct I have since abandoned used tyres and ported to brand new Austone tyres, after I noticed that a particular organization all have Austone tyres on their Corollas and 406s which cover rnore than 15k miles monthly.. 3 years on Austone and no complaints at all...Tyre wear is minimal and zero monkey business going on... Brand new Linglong tyres came on an 08 accord that just fell into my hands ...3 months on and I am still watching them cautiously..no complaints for now But now, I won't touch a fairly used tyre with a 10-foot pole...There is almost always something going on with those tyres...Like someone said, our warehouse billionaire brethren have turned the fairly used tyre business in Nigeria into a poisoned chalice... |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by Babatundehy: 8:34pm On Jan 24 |
Sellfish:I have always loved new things, the day I bought these tyres I went to a trusted store and was told to get Austone, i think i got each for 40k then (225/60/R17), like you, after all this time these tyres have very little wear, AUSTONE Is a really good tyre brand. |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by 9icetoo(m): 11:50pm On Jan 24 |
Sellfish:15k miles monthly? At this rate, they'd need a new set of tyres every 3 months. Are you sure? |
| Re: The Tokunbo Tyre Debate: Smart Choice Or False Economy? by Sellfish(m): 3:58am On Jan 25*. Modified: 12:49pm On Jan 25 |
9icetoo:Very sure... It's a missionary organization affiliated to a well known church in Northern Nigeria... And I am the one whose vehicle has spent 3 years plus on a set of Austone tyres, not the organization, to clear any misconception |

Hmm.. So how much is new tyre that is good even if not the best. I don't do much move around with vehicle nowadays but the road to my house can be tagged off road. So I settled for Toks. However, the last one I bought few months ago was around 50k. I got it cos I needed a spare urgently. |
