On Sunday, July 13, 2025, Nigeria received the news it had been quietly expecting: former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away in a London hospital after battling an illness for several months. He was 82.

While his health issues had been known, the announcement still shook many across the country. Buhari was more than a former president. To some, he was a military hero. To others, a democratic leader who fought corruption and preached discipline. And to many, a symbol of missed chances and unfulfilled promises.

Buhari’s body was flown back to Nigeria and buried in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15, according to Islamic rites. The burial was attended by top dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, governors, military officers, traditional rulers, and thousands of citizens.

A military parade, a 21-gun salute, and crowds chanting "Sai Baba" welcomed the former president’s final homecoming. His coffin, wrapped in the Nigerian flag, was carried with full state honour from the Katsina airport to Daura, where prayers and tributes were offered.
