Coalition Effect: Tinubu May Resume Fuel Subsidy Payment by Validated(op): 12:01pm On Jul 17, 2025
The argument about fuel subsidy have raged from 1990s. Every government come up at one point or another suggesting that Nigeria is subsidizing petrol. From the time of IBB , then Abacha, at one time or another, the pump price adjustments were hinged on correcting the disparity between landing cost snd the love-vendor price.
Some politicians like Adam's Oshomole became popular for challenging subsidy removal. In 2012, Tinubu and many psuedo-activists or what is now term castiivists gathered at Ojota to protest GEJ's attempt at subsidy removal.
Fast forward to May 29, 2023, the same Tinubu on his inauguration declared "Subsidy is gone". That thoughtless statement drove the already sinking economy into deeper abyss. As if not enough, Tinubu, in his desperation to show that he also can implement what the opponents campaigned with, ordered the floating of the Naira. The double prong effect resulted in massive destruction of the economy. Many Nigerians became extremely poor. The middle class started japaing and now the Nigerian economy is in total disarray. Tinubu's economic team are at best confused and overwhelmed.

Perceiving imminent defeat in 2027, Tinubu commenced state capture and destruction of opposition parties. He even boasted that if a one party state is the solution, so be it. He said that everyone is free to leave a sinking ship, a direct reference to the defections happening in PDP.
Unknowingly or will I say oblivious of the resilience of man, Tinubu failed to realize that a willing and determined people can fight back. The birthing of ADC has effectively turned the tide against the Jagaban. Today, all opposition leaders, who hitherto were in different political parties hijacked by Tinubu and his proxies found a home in ADC.
The momentum that ADC has generated in the last 2 weeks are clear pointer to Tinubu that his strategies may have failed. Had he left the opposition in their respective parties, they would have still cannibalize their votes, but today, ADC has galvanized them. Tinubu is now cornered.

So, what next for Tinubu than to look to the masses he impoverished in the last 26 months? He has now reverted to bailing the Naira, after it has lost the about 300% in value. Inflation still soaring and purchasing power of the Naira becoming useless. The idea of using scarce foreign reserves to shore up the Naira was a critical branding payoff by the Tinubu government in the last two years. His supporters have always paraded phantom massive savings being made for floating the Naira. Today, they are back to eating their rotten vomits. They are online now defending how Japan and China defend their currencies. What an incoherent lot.

In the last 48 hours, ADC has hinted that it would reduce pump price immediately on ascension of power on May 29, 2027. With this information and the new NBS inflation jargons, I can boldly state that Tinubu and his dieing APC will soon commence massive subsidies payments. Not that they have not been paying in the past, but with the statement last week to IMF to "Let us breath", it points towards abandoning all the "gains" they claained their uselessly implemented reforms have made.
Watch out as this pans out. However, with the damages already done, Tinubu may be out beating a dead horse. Who needs a dead horse anyway. Tinubu should start packing his load from Aso Rock as a new occupant will be sworn-in on May 29, 2027

The Book of Opposition Lamentations. The reforms are working, only a thief and a liar would attempt to reverse them.
Nigeria should be one of the leading economies in the world and there's no way you can achieve that by getting yourself into a situation where you have to borrow money to pay subsidies.

Tinubu have been subsidies since 300k barrels of oil daily since he took over

If true, i m in support of resuming the petrol subsidy.

1. The saved fund is being used for all the usual nonsenses.
2. Needless road at inflated cost wont negate the effect of the subsidy on Nigerians but is being prioritzed.

Good analysis. Using foreign reserves to shore up the naira was a new last ditch effort from Tinubu. It's obvious he is desperate now

Tinubu destroyed the economy from day one with his sheer arrogance and megalomanic "I know-it-all" mentality. They have been secretly paying subsidies and defending the naira while borrowing record-breaking loans but without any resultant effect on the livelihood of the people. He's grossly overrated.

No no no we've passed that stage. He should consolidate the naira and work seriously on insecurities particularly in Benue state.

Be deceiving yourself.
Which reforms are working? In Cameroon or this our Nigeria?
Abi na small children you de talk to? You will waiting till next 20 years nothing will change, those reforms are non yielding reforms, they can never work.
It's better he resume public payment of fuel subsidy, we were better off even with borrowing. Are they not borrowing more now? There's absolutely nothing bad in government subsidizing products for her citizens

The damage has been done already. His haughtiness, despite seeing more Nigerians voting against him than for him, is his biggest problem. If he'd publicly shown humility and purpose, Nigerians may have turned a blind eye to his obvious inefficiencies. But no. Satisfying the governors was more important than showing sympathy to the poor.
Tinubu doesn't have an iota of regard for the poor. He is just too elitist, unlike Buhari.

Except when it becomes a drain and the government cannot do anything other than borrow to pay salaries and subsidies.

When you look at the projection for elections, SE is already gone. The North is out of favour with BAT.

The only hope was the SW.

However, even most of the good people of the region are suffering and wouldn't want to risk their future.

I have been studying the results recently, most of the state where APC won in the middle belt with little margin.LP gave the a run for their money. ADC is only a crop of people who have had their chance to influence the nation but they made decision that negativity affected Nigerians.

If Peter Obi was wise he would have remained in LP.
He got 6 million votes within a short span of planning, now people will be willing to give him a chance.
As it stands popular votes will swing in his favor, while those who didn't vote him previously, would consider him as a lesser evil.

I wish he understood how cheap his victory would have been with LP.

Rent of 200k rose to 700k. The ones of 400-500k is now 1.2m to 1.5m. Ontop a stagnant salary.

The damage have been done and nothing can correct all of that. Even if he reduce fuel to 200. I don’t see all things rent coming down again.

The only gamble Tinubu has now is to cause disunity among the coalition.
If the coalition can agree and present a candidate that everyone supports like Buhari in 2015, then it is all over for Tinubu. He has his goons can only continue to milk the country dry between now and 2027.
