Tinubu Honoured Buhari In Death, But Buhari Snubbed Shagari When He Died —Grandson Laments

Grandson of former Nigeria’s first Executive President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Nura Muhammad Mahe, has accused the late President Muhammadu Buhari of failing to honour his father with a state burial in 2018, unlike the dignified burial he (Buhari) received from President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement issued in Sokoto on Wednesday, Mahe expressed disappointment over the manner in which his grandfather was treated by the Buhari administration and described President Tinubu’s gesture as a model of national unity and respect.

“This is in sharp contrast to how my grandfather, President Shehu Shagari, was treated during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.

He recalled that Shagari died on December 28, 2018, and was buried a day later without the presence of President Buhari or any state-organised honour, despite Buhari being in the country.

“Instead of Buhari attending the burial at the time, he sent a delegation led by the then Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, to represent the government,” Mahe stated.

“It was a painful experience for the Shagari family and many Nigerians who expected more honour for a man who served as Nigeria’s first Executive President,” he added.

He alleged that the treatment was due to “unresolved political grievances,” and further stated, “even in death, Buhari failed to show due respect to his predecessor.”

Mahe commended Tinubu for demonstrating statesmanship by attending Buhari’s funeral in person and for establishing a high-level committee to oversee the burial, urging future leaders to take a cue from this gesture.

He concluded with prayers for all deceased Nigerian leaders, stating that their roles—whether celebrated or debated—remain significant in the country’s history.

Shagari died at the National Hospital Abuja on December 28, 2018 after a brief illness. He died at the age of 93.

Shagari was born in the northern Shagari village founded by his great-grandfather, Ahmadu Rufa’i, who was also the Village Head and took the name Shagari as his family name.

With his wealth of experience in service, Shagari served in ministerial or cabinet posts seven times, first as a federal minister and later as federal commissioner, from 1958 to 1975.

In 1954, Shagari was elected to his first public office as a member of the federal House of Representatives for Sokoto West.

In 1958, Shagari was appointed as parliamentary secretary (he left the post in 1959) to the Nigerian Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. That year, he also served as the Federal Minister for Commerce and Industries.

From 1959 to 1960, Shagari was redeployed to the Ministry for Economic Development as the Federal Minister for Economic Development.

From 1971-75, he served as the Federal Commissioner (a position now called minister) of finance.

Tinubus role in Buharis burial was well choreographed to sway northern opinion towards him. It was a sharp contrast to the consistent criticism of Buharis tenure and the blame he received from Tinubus people.

Talks of "we inherited a broken economy" were actually targeted at the same Buhari they accused of bringing only 12m to the table.

Buhari really stepped on toes either intentionally or unintentionally. I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that he did not attend the burial of the late COAS, Lt. Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, even right there in Abuja where they both share residence. It beats my imagination. Personally, I'm still holding that against Buhari. I was telling my elder sister same thing when FG announced public holiday to mourn the late Buhari. I frowned at it and thereafter, told her that some presidents may not do so for their late predecessors due to selfish or personal irreconcilable difference(s).

In the south west, we stay true to our friends till the very end. Tinubu stood by Buhari in 2015 and stood firmly by him again in 2019 despite how he was treated by the Buhari cabal in the first four years of the administration. So, Tinubu has no excuse not to give Buhari a befitting burial. That’s the least he can do for a dead friend and ally.

Tinubu rules out alliance with CPC

Prospect of a possible alliance between the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN and Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, was dashed yesterday in Kano as the leader of the party and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu described CPC as parading “expired leadership.”

Tinubu told ACN supporters in Kano during the party’s Presidential rally that: “What Nigerians need now is a transformation in leadership” as obtained in the advanced economy.

The two-term Governor of Lagos State explained that the leadership of ACN was offering Nigeria the brilliance of Nuhu Ribadu who, he said, is in the class of Nicolas Sarkozi of France, David Cameron of Britain, Medvedev of Russia and Barack Obama of the United States of America.

“What has CPC got to offer? We certainly don’t need expired leadership as we are offering the best in terms of brilliance, courage and patriotism in the class of Sarkozi of France, David Cameron of Britain and Barack Obama of the USA.”

Tinubu’s position came on the heels of Ribadu’s declaration penultimate week in Kaduna when he hinted during a political rally of a joint ticket between the two opposition parties to confront the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The national leader of ACN criticised President Goodluck Jonathan for shying away from the national debate held last Friday, stressing that”that singular act exposed Jonathan as a coward who has nothing to offer.”
