I just came across the attached letter; saw it on Facebook on a friend's timeline. The Igbo Fest is a cultural program organized by the Igbos; I looked it up online and found that a similar event was held at Abuja recently. The Ikwerres through their association - the Ikwerre People's Association - wrote the IG of police and copied a bunch of other people calling for the scheduled program to be shut down. When I saw this, I was immediately worried. Last I checked, Nigeria is a multicultural terrain where everyone has an equal right to identify and uphold his/her cultural practices (as long as no harm is perpetrated). Again, Nigerians are entirely free to associate in any legal group they deem fit. As far as I know, the Igbo cultural group is legal, and per the laws of our land, they are free to hold their peaceful gatherings in any state they deem fit. The program, as a matter of fact, is scheduled to hold in a school compound, safely away from the roads (unlike the Ikwerres that are fund of blocking roads as they please and messing up traffic). Why on God's earth should any group be threatened by this program? The IPA claims the program is a threat to law, peace, and orderliness in PH. I dare ask: how exactly is this a threat? They claimed the Igbos intend to declare Rivers State an Igbo state and impose sit-at-home. Again, how? How does holding this program, in a closed space away from the road threaten anyone? This program was held in Abuja, nobody was threatened, there was no breakdown in law and orderliness. I'm sure it has been held in other locations before...Lagos inclusive. Why is the PH edition of the program a threat to anyone? Do the Ikwerres realize that their people outside PH hold similar gatherings? Are they aware that their tribe's students' association hold cultural programs on their respective campuses? How about the Ikwerres in the diaspora? In the letter, they recommended that the program should be held in any of the SEn states. How does this make any sense? So, people should leave their businesses and other engagements to travel to their states to hold a program....in a supposedly free Nigeria where people have an equal right to associate? I think most of us are blind; so blind that we don't see how evil we have become over the years. We scream tribalism when talking about the appointment patterns of the federal government but locally, we are worse. We scream racism when we discuss negros but we don't see/realize how racist we are. As I see it, this letter reeks of hypocrisy! I urge the police and every other person to disregard the letter, and, perhaps, reprimand its authors. The police in the state should avail themselves in the proposed date of the program and ensure law and orderliness are maintained. We call our politicians unprintable names...but most of us are as bad - or worse. May God help us all.

It is legal but they don't want it in their land, it's that simple. Same way the anambara people don't want ebonyi people to hold meetings in their place n they killed them. Ikweres are telling u to take your cultural day to your region, it's that simple If an anambara man won't allow an ebonyi man hold meeting in anambara then an ikwere man can decide who he wants in his space too Gabadaya

Factcheck0001:The fulanis are not worried about the igbos no more.., the Tivs are not worried about the igbos, the idomas, the ibibios and Anangs... Most of these are the immediate neighbours of the igbos. They don't sleep with one eye open because of their neighbor. But it's you that lives a thousand miles away, you that shares no borders with the igbos, you that begs for unity like a man in the desert would beg for water, that is soooo traumatised by these igbos!? You don't think you have to ask yourself some basic questions? |

I never know that the law of Freedom of Association is only selective to few people. Secondly, is there any Nigerian law saying Igbo's or any other tribe don't have the right to gather wherever they feel. This syncophancy and selective criminalization of a particular group, especially the Igbo tribe need to stop. With these kind of resentment and vendetta, I don't see this country moving forward |

HenryWilliams:Funny how you easily concluded that I'm Igbo because of my post. How is holding a cultural gathering in a closed space "shocking oneself in people's faces"? What's your tribe? You realize that your people hold cultural gatherings in other states...on and off campuses...and in other countries, yeah? |

Factcheck0001:A wrong precedence is not an excuse to support a bad practice. Whatever happened in Anambra is not my business. The Ikwerres should approach their legislators to make laws banning hosting other people's cultural gatherings...so we'll all know it's illegal.. Otherwise, everyone is free to associate as he/she pleases...as far as it's legal. |

UNFORTUNATELY FOR THEM, FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION A A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT, IF U HAVE NO SKELETON IN YOUR CUPBOARD THEN WHY ARE YOU AFRAID OF YOUR SHADOW. THE FEST MUST GO ON. |

TONYE001:Forget IPA, they do this every year. The Nigerian Police will not pay them any mind Some days ago, there was Igbo day celebration in London, Anyidons performed there. And some people are saying that Igbos cannot celebrate their day in Porthacourt? What nonsense is that? |
