24 IPOB Member Rejoice As They Leave Jail After Being Acquitted 5 Times-pic&vide by gidgiddy(op):
This is the sort of case you hear and wonder if Nigeria is a jungle. I have followed this case since 2021 and it shockingly exposes how bad the Nigerian judicial system really is. You can read the full story in my previous thread

https://www.nairaland.com/8225276/authorities-refuse-release-36-ipob

But the short of the Story is that in 2021, 36 IPOB members were arrested in Ebonyi State. They were charged to court for terrorism, unlawful gathering and other crimes. In 2022, the high court acquitted the 36 men. Rather than release them, the authorities ran to another court and re-arraigned the men on the same charges, but adding armed robbery and gun possession to the list of charges. While this second case was on, the authorities ran to a third court to charge the men with arson. The courts acquitted the men in the second case in 2023, but they were again held in detention to answer for the third case. The men were discharged for the third case in 2024, only for the authorities to slightly amend the charges and run to another court in the Ikwo area of Ebonyi State to charge the men for the 4th time. In April 2025, the 36 men were discharged and acquitted of all charges for the 4th time only for the authorities to release just 12 of them, then ran to same court to charge the remaining 24 men again for the same charge, for the 5th time! This time, IPOB's general council, Barrister Ejiofor, submitted in court that the men can no longer be charged for a crime they had been previously acquitted of, under Nigerian double jeopardy law.

So the men were acquitted for the 5th time today! Barrister Ejiofor led the overjoyed men out of prison with their baggages as they sang and danced to songs of their freedom

These men spent 4 years in jail despite being discharged and acquitted five different times. What a country!

I know that some people will support this injustice, but know that the injustice you support today could be what may visit you or your loved ones tomorrow

This kind of injustice is now being normalised simply because nobody in the east is willing to push back. There are hundreds if not thousands of cases like this. Including those kidnapped from Obigbo. This has to stop. But as long as there are no concerted efforts to stop this, it will continue. Many igbos are siad to be languishing in jails as far as Niger state. This is while the federal government is busy releasing "repentant" boko haram fighters.. Folks have to learn how to really push back..

They just wasted their 4 years for nothing!

There's nothing sane about Nigeria. That's why everyone must be careful with things they do. If you visit prisons across the country and hear cases for which inmates were imprisoned, you'll realise how uselezz this country is.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise - if you are a son of a nobody, be mindful of the association you join. When you make it in life, you now have a voice and demand justice.

How can there be a push back when the biggest purveyors of Igbophobia are our political elites! Check out Soludo and Patrick mba..........and I thought Uzodimma was bad! All their gragra will soon come to an end!

So you have confirmed what we have always said. You now agree that the judgement of 2023 was dictated by him.
