I was watching the review of the club world cup and Lineker threw a jab at the Americans. He said, why do we need 26 mins half time? He was hoping that they don't continue with that in football. Then he said, it's because American sports are boring, they need to bring in an entertainment to fill the void 😂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nFA5VF7nCM |

OP the big tin this gyal in CR7 shirt carry for back big pass the Ronaldo and American achievement in their Soccer careers . But I read long time ago that American football was born the day bored sailors on their way to America decided to improvise on a ship by passing a normal football with hands instead of legs so as not to keep retrieving it from high sea ! |

wolesmile:yea, the history is correct. I have researched it before and it was same history. Just adding to it. That the american football is called football because the length of the ball is about 1 foot (from same research) |

FreeIgboho:How does that contradict what I just said, even with the initial government funding it is still not a lucrative sport for Americans unlike basketball and American football. The men will never forego these sports for soccer lai lai! |

abbey621:So question I asked you is, why are other non-lucrative sports NOT also women-only sports? Why is soccer not a women's sport in Nigeria? |

FreeIgboho:Wetin concern USA with Nigeria? Even as a toddler in Nigeria, you're indoctrinated into soccer male or female, from watching to actual participation yet less than 20% of all females in 9ja actually plays or played soccer. Next, can you mention the non lucrative sport that is not dominated by women in the USA? Is it gymnastic? Athletics? |
| Re: Why Do Americans Call Football 'Soccer'? by FreeIgboho: 11:46pm On Jul 17, 2025 |
abbey621:That's the question - why couldn't it have been so in the US? Because soccer doesn't require any special equipments. Ghetto kids could be playing it. It is a REAL mystery. No other sports in US is reserved for women like soccer. It is as if they don't see it as a masculine sport for some mysterious reason! |

FreeIgboho:Why is the sky blue? Why is T-Pain still alive? Why is my aunty not my uncle? Dude you're asking funny questions . Gymnastics has more women in it than men even more skewed than soccer. US is not Nigeria, no male kid is ever thinking of soccer over basketball or American football, it's all about history and popularity. The same reason majority of 9ja kids are not thinking of tennis over soccer. It has nothing to do with masculinity. For US kids, it's about popularity and the chance to be like their idols, when it comes to soccer in America, you can't really find any idol because the sport is still young less than 35 years since it became mainstream but in basketball, you'll hear names like Wilt, Dr.J, Bird, Jordan, Abdul-Jabar, Mikan, Naismith and even some names going back as far as 80 years. |

FreeIgboho:US men like physical games. Jam body, power for power, strength to strength games like american football and basketball, ice hickey etc. They like short games, due to the physicality, that they can call time out at any time, take break, drink beer, ease themselves and come back.. Football bores them, requires technique and intellect skills more than physicality. And u have to sit and watch ut for 45 minutes before break. They tried introducing coaches calling time out in football, it didn't work. The only one FIFA allowed was water break if the weather is too hot |

Now, around the 1870s, students, especially at Oxford University, were fond of a playful slang practice where they shortened words and added –er to their end. Breakfast, for instant, became brekker. Rugby? Rugger. Football? Footer. The association in association football was also shortened to soccer. This clips off the first and last three syllables of association, leaving –soc-, onto which that chummy –er was added, yielding soccer. The term is first recorded as socker in 1891. Footer is slightly older, found in that fateful year of 1863. |

thatigboman:Not true AT ALL. Soccer requires far less intellect and strategy than American football and more physical than baseball, tennis, basketball, and far less boring than baseball. But more importantly, what explains why kids in the hoods don't play it on the streets like in other countries? Unlike other sports it requires ZERO equipments. All you need is something that can serve as ball and 4 random objects to mark the goal posts, That's all |
