Wike Left 2,000 Hectares Of Mountain For UNIAbuja – Pro-Chancellor by Ofunaofu(op): 8:48pm On Jul 17, 2025
The Pro-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Sen. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has reacted to the controversy surrounding the retrieval of the university’s land by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

According to Tejuoso, the 4,000 hectares of land allocated to the university are not entirely usable, as 2,000 hectares of it is mountainous terrain

Recall that at the inauguration of the access road to the Giri district in FCT on June 30, Wike alleged that the university ‘grabbed’ 11,000 hectares of land, adding that only 4,000 hectares will be allocated to the institution.

Speaking on Arise TV on Thursday, Tejuoso explained that the 11,000 hectares of land were allocated to the university by former president Ibrahim Babangida and that the development of the institution is an ongoing process.

“And he had his vision of the University of Abuja to be the flagship of universities all over the country… We had 11,000 hectares so that we could keep on developing. No university develops in a day.

“Even no state government develops in a day. If that is the case, the Honourable Minister of FCT wouldn’t have made a statement to start doing projects if they had already finished all the development. It’s a continuous exercise,” he said.

Tejuoso revealed that the university has been attracting partnerships and investments, including a cancer research centre, and that the threat to the land is hampering these efforts.

He noted that the university has memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with partners, adding that the university’s development and growth are being hindered by the uncertainty over the land.

The Pro-Chancellor suggested that the FCT Minister, Wike, could take over the mountainous part of the land and develop it, rather than taking the usable land.

“Let me first of all tell you that even the 4,000 hectares you are talking about, 2,000 hectares of it is a mountain. When you fly out of Abuja Airport, the mountain you see is in the university. So, looking at what has been proposed, we only have 2,000 hectares because we have a mountain of 2,000. Maybe Minister Wike should come and take over the mountain and develop it,” he said.

He expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would do the right thing in the matter, adding that the Minister of Education is also having discussions with the FCT minister over the issue.

“Everything is owned by the federal government. So if the federal government decides that it doesn’t want the University of Abuja to exist or to develop, so be it. I was appointed by the president to be the pro-chancellor, the chairman of the council, and I inherited what we have now.

“So if the federal government decides that it wants to reduce what I’m going to govern over, what can I say? But what is important is there’s no way that we can have a successful vision if they reduce what we are marketing to partners,” he said.

Meanwhile, the acting vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Lar Patricia Manko, has reiterated that the 11,000 hectares of land is a legacy asset given to the institution by the federal government.

During an interview with newsmen on Thursday, Manko, while acknowledging Wike as FCT landlord, said the university land can never be too much, and the institution has a plethora of uses for the property.

Manko, who stated that the controversy is already being handled, noted that the university has plans for the use of the expanse of land ranging from agriculture, tourism, research centres, quarters for members of staff and student hostels, among others.

The acting VC said that due to a lack of funds to finance some of the projects, the institution has entered into some memoranda of understanding for the development.

She noted that the current staff quarters of the institution are temporarily built on plots of land given to the university by the military, and there are plans to construct permanent structures at the institution’s permanent site.

The acting VC said there are many investors who are partnering with the institution in the development of the projects on the 11,000 hectares of land

11000 hectares of land is too much for any University...Even Harvard University is just sitting on 2,000 hectares of land...The chancellor and that VC should come clean on what they intend to do with that land...Is Real Estate they are interested in?

Wike and Tinubu shouldn't listen to them...Let them develop the 4,000 hectares, if they even can.

Maybe if he could outline the development they have in mind for the University, we might reason with the VC.

The fact is that 11,000 hectares is too much for a university.

I'm surprise the senator is claiming 2000 hectares is small. What's it actually they want to use the whole11,000 hectares for? 2000 hectares is more than enough to do anything they want to do.

The concept of development in Africa is largely centered around huge structures. 11,000 acres for what.

And is there no room for future expansion of the university? What is Nyesom Wike cornering the alleged excess land for? Giving it to another of his sons or cronies again?

People hailing the Wiked man now, after he leaves and another minister comes to open his can of worms.

People will pity Nigeria.

The land he is taking now, he would allocate them to himself and his cronies, the sad news about it is that, they too will not also develop it in next 50 years.

I have to agree with you on this.
These federal universities don't know what they want to do with these lands.
Their mismanagement technique is over the moon.

He is right.
If you schooled in a NG federal university you will understand that school managers use these resources for private businesses that doesn't benefit anybody.
I applaud those that lease the bare lands as farmlands for staff, but some will draft a planned humongous structure to tetfund with intention to gulp half the budget leaving the school with incomplete projects littered around.
Having limited land resources will make them sit up.
That's how international grant works, give you little if you utilize it very well, the rest will be released

Most of the 11 hectares have been wasting away for long.
If only the University have gone into a massive mechanized agriculture Wike wouldn't have taken back part of the land.

Harvard main Campus is just 210 acres, Universities in Nigeria will grab land and use it for breeding camps for cultists who initiate members inside the bush areas of these Universities. Vatican City as a country is just 49 hectares

No university in the world needs more than 2,000 hectres of land. Even the globally acclaimed John Hopkins University (with the Worlds best hospital) etc sits on 57 hectres of land as it's main campus . So talk of cancer center is just an attempt to hoodwink the public. The truth is that these guys are interested in that land for selfish reasons. No be Nigerians again?

Unilorin is 15,000 hectares

Can you mention the law or rule that says 11,000 hectares is too much for a university. The land was rightly given to them. Wike does not have any immediate use for the land other than taking it because he can ostensibly to share it to cronies when no one is looking.
Has Wike told you the plans he has for taking 7000 hectares from the university other than greed?

What selfish reasons? The university has existed for years before Wike and there's been no report of the land being used for any selfish purpose. If you have bring it.
Wike should tell us the overriding interest he has that is pushing him to grab the university land. It's he planning to build a space research center there?

that is why they are left with 2000 hectares of mountains and rocky land. Even if Wike wants to collect the property as minister of FCT , why not go through the right process or at least leave some flesh on the bones he left for the school. God forgive you people supporting evil sha because we all know how your mouths would have been running like I pass my neighbor generator if this travesty had happened under the PDP yet it didn't even happen under the military. Why should a minister arrogate so much power to himself and reduce land acquired for a university in to enable its future expansion?Vision transcends today it goes far into unseen future no one knows it all, there are great thinkers that probably be coming who may see greater use to which to put land acquired.Where one man's thought ends there another man's thought begins.

With growing Nigeria's population. The university is a form of land conservation for future use.
The FCT minister is not serious.
You can have university garden, university agriculture research farm, new permanent site, university millennium park, international teaching hospital and research centre and build a healthy intellectual university community.

Oga I'm not and can never be a fan and a supporter of wike but you see this one I stand solidly behind him. What does the school need 11 hectares for? That's way too much most of the Nigerian universities you see today except unilorin and maybe 3 other schools are all seating of less than 5 hectares. And the 5 hectares is even too much how much more 11 hectares haba nah. Mind you 15 solid plot of land makes an hectares for your information
We're talking about 165,000 plots of land, Omo make unah they fear God o
