UNILORIN has 11,000 hectares, ABU has 8,000 hectares, FUTMINNA has 10,640 hectares.

Harvard university has 40,000hectares including it's research centers across the world.

We need to be futuristic in thinking.

The Harvard you're mentioning has 44,000 hectares across the world. UNIABUJA doesn't have any other campus apart from that one. 11,000 hectares isn't too much.

Even LASU if you combine their lands across Badagry, Ojo, and the main campus, it's more than 2,000 hectares.

1 hectre is equivalent to 10,000 square metres, multiple that by 11,000 then you'll begin to imagine the outrageous size of land this university is sitting on.

I ply that road frequently and most of it have been encroached. Large communities have been established there and expanding. My emphasis is on the failure of the University to utilize the vast land, especially in the area of mechanized agriculture.

As I said earlier, the reason why universites in nigeria have excessive land needs is because housing in most nigerian cities is not enough to sustain the large numbers of staff needed for a university.

Yes, European and some american unis have small areas...but looking closely, there is enough housing within their host cities to comfortably accomodate the students, and staff, and if there isn't , transport links like railways exist..so a student can live two hours away, and take a train to and from his campus.

NIgerian cities do not have that luxury, which is why most of them are situated on large land masses, expecially the older ones. When UNN, ABU and OAU were set up for example, all the towns they were set up in were not large enough to accomodate students comfortably. So, large land mass to build accomodation for staff and students from scratch. Same issue with Uniabuja...it is just that the money has not been enough, otherwise by now Uniabuja would have been a city on its own.

Still, Abuja has grown over the years, so it is likely accomodation is 'better'...and the government no longer builds housing for staff....maybe that's why Wike is so bold to do what he did...but the thing is, universites still need space to grow.

Because this is not about thier salaries and allowances, you will not hear a word from ASUU. I expected ASUU Uniabuja chapter to rise up and protest this greed from Wike.

Wike is like this administration attack dog; once they point him toward a direction....there is no turning back. Wike's "land grabbing" lust no be today. Go check out his personal house in Ph on Ada George Road...the guy bought over a whole village! He bought over peoples personal and rented houses, a church, bullied a prominent Ikwere man and bought his school and shopping center. Secondly, his apprehension towards University of Abuja having that much land and his willingness to do anything to disposes them of a chunk is a deep reflection of the elite/ruling classes total disregard for education sector in Nigeria. If there is any institution that is expected to encourage and champion R&, its the universities in Nigeria. Laboratories, libraries, hostels, Research labs, recreations centers etc wont be built in the air....they need ample real estate. We are have been talking about growing the Agro economy of Nigeria and all we do is lip service. No wonder all their children attend post primary schools in the UK and US because they know our educational system is BROKEN.

What research are you doing with 11000 hectares of land, university that cannot produce toothpick. Even Cambridge and Harvard are not on 4000 hectares. Go and see top universities abroad outside in the city side by side with shopping malls and banks. Are you a real estate company or university? The mountainous 2000 part, let the VC and staff use it for exercise and meditation who knows they might get inspiration for invention in the process. focus on your main calling

Every well meaning Nigerian frown to the news allegedly, however that doesn't justify the appropriation of such a bogus land to the tone of 11 hectares of land to the university. Wike allocating 2000 hectares to his sons that's pure madness everybody knows it won't work, he's just enjoying the privilege Mr president gave him because he's actually needed in the forth coming elections. The next minister of FCT will revoke those lands and cure wike of his madness

Name one very good, serious University abroad with such a large expanse of land. Did Berry College in the US also grab land or that malfeasance only applies to Nigerian universities with vast land

What guarantees do you have that the next minister will not simply grab his own especially if Wike becomes VP under the next dispensation as some people claim
How is the land bogus? The land was legally and rightfully given to the university. Some of you want universities to become self-funding but you have no problem with politicians stripping them of valuable assets which they are surely going to hand over to their cronies
