Senate Approves Creation Of 12 New States

In a landmark decision, the Nigerian Senate has approved the creation of 12 new states, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's political and administrative landscape. This historic move, following the third and final reading of the Senate Committee on State Creation’s report, aims to address long-standing demands for equitable representation and improved local governance across the six geo-political zones.



The newly approved states are:

• South West: Ijebu (from Ogun State) and Ibadan (from Oyo State)
• South East: Anim (from parts of Anambra and Imo States) and Adada (from Enugu State)
• South South: Toru-Ibe (from sections of Ondo, Edo, and Delta States) and Obolo (from Akwa Ibom State)
• North East: Savanna (from Borno State) and Amana (from Adamawa State)
• North West: Tiga (from Kano State) and Gurara (from Southern Kaduna)
• North Central: Okura (from Kogi State) and Apa (from Benue State)


This expansion of states underscores the Senate's commitment to fostering national unity, inclusiveness, and sustainable development. It represents a significant response to widespread agitations for increased state representation and grassroots empowerment, promising to bring governance closer to the people and potentially accelerate development in previously underserved areas. An official gazette detailing the administrative frameworks for these new states is anticipated to be released soon.

Mind you all your 5 states are just a little bigger than Oyo state, so put some respect

More states, more looting.

Some of them are planning to be governors of those states. Nigeria as a failed contraption can't even managed the present 36 state structure. So additional state creation is an unwise political decision @ present.

Even the Senate ought be on a part time basis or merge into a a unicameral legislature to cut cost of governance. Bunch of rubber-stamped stooges.

We've not managed 36 states well enough and we want to create more.

Historically, Anioma is an offshoot of the old western region which became the Midwest and then old Bendel and now Delta state. They share nothing with the SE who came to Delta through migration. Dennis Osadebey created Anioma for political exigency as an acronym for Aniocha, Ndokwa, Ika and Oshimili.

This may not hold water because some people will see it as a political.

Will this new states improve the standard of living in this country or it will be corruption as usual

Nigeria does not need more states. That's not our problem now. But what do I expect from Nigerian politicians? 🙄 Majoring on the minor and minoring on the major.

No state will be created anywhere! Mark it!

Where are the Itsekiri and ilaje?

They should have created one bold, visionary state in each geopolitical zone surgically crafted to heal historic injustices, balance entrenched inequalities, and give breathing space to regions suffocated by structural covetousness.

ANIOMA STATE (South South)

Let Delta be split in two, once and for all. Anioma Igbo-speaking, culturally distinct, historically sidelined deserves a state of its own.
No more being passengers in a political vehicle they don’t drive.
Anioma State is justice, overdue.



APA STATE (North Central)

The Idoma people of Benue have been politically overshadowed for decades. Let them breathe. Let Apa rise.
A state of dignity for a people who’ve waited too long in the shadow of others’ dominance.
Apa is overdue oxygen.



SOUTHERN KADUNA STATE (North West)

Enough of the violence, the marginalization, the systemic silence. Southern Kaduna deserves its own destiny.
A state that reflects its culture, faith, and cry for peace.
Let Southern Kaduna be bornnot from revenge, but from necessity.


SOUTHERN BORNO STATE (North East)

Southern Borno has its own culture, voice, and wounds.
Let a new state emerge from the ashes of terror and neglect one that prioritizes healing, security, and self-governance.


Etiti state to balance the south east and reduce the flurry of unbalanced agitation

Political speaking, Anim state is the only state worth creating to reduce the lopsidedness of the political discussions.
If size and ungoverned areas are e issue, then states like Niger, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa and Taraba needs attention.
If it's based on population, then states like Anambra, Lagos, Kano Rivers need attention.
But if for political selfish reasons, then every local government needs to become a state.

newly approved states are:

Anioma that Ned Nwokolo defected to APC to is not part. How will this states be sustained and financed. Wrong timing. Each will will have another NASS. Tinubu will approve it. Igbomina deserves a state.

🤔 .. I'm still wondering how this will work.

Take for instance, the current governor of Ondo State is from the part of the state to be ceded to the proposed Toru-Ibe state. Is he going to resign after the creation of this state or what?
