A young Nigerian man has narrated how police officers in Owerri, Imo State, assaulted him, dragged him into a bush, and forcefully emptied all the money in his bank account.

According to him, he had only stepped out that morning to buy food when he was accosted by the Owerri police. They forced him into their vehicle and drove him into a bush. After rounds of intimidation and brutal beating, he was left with no choice but to surrender his phone. He initially resisted, insisting they had no right to check it, but gave in when the assault became unbearable.

After searching his phone and finding nothing incriminating, the officers discovered ₦30,000 in his bank account — which they promptly withdrew, leaving him stranded with no money for transport. They returned his ATM card and ordered him to leave.

Many others on X (formerly Twitter) have also shared similar experiences at the hands of police officers in Owerri.

That is not necessarily true. The POS may not even have a iota of knowledge about what is going on. Just trying to make a genuine means of livelihood.

Imo State govt and The Statec police command owe the citizens an enquiry. This should be conducted immediately to ascertain and fish out the bad eggs in the Force
